ABOUT:
Independence Square was established in 1827 and earned the nickname "Queen City of the Trails" by the 1840s. It served as the starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails. The area experienced intense activity, outfitting pioneers before and after the first courthouse was built in 1836. The Civil War caused conflict at the Square, with two battles occurring in 1862 and 1864.
