Location History

The Squirrel Cage Jail is located a couple blocks just west of the courthouse in Gallatin, MO. It was built in 1889. It is one of the three remaining rotating jails in the United States. One is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa and the other in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Upon entering the jail, you will find the Sheriff's living quarters. This is the only jail to have the Sheriff's living quarters attached. The first part of the jail that can be entered is the jail kitchen. The Sheriff's wife would cook for the inmates, as well as her family. The original hand crank is still in place, as well as the "grub hole" which is where the inmates' food was put through. The inside of the jail is very unique. The door still opens to let the prisoners in and out of, however, it does not turn anymore. One side of the jail is still intact with the bars still up and the other side is open to where you can see and go into the actual jail cells. The walls are covered with graffiti from past inmates.
A donation to the Jail is greatly appreciated!!!

Investigators Notes

Becky Ray: As soon as we walked in the door we could feel a kind of energy in the air. I felt as though we were being watched almost all evening.
After touring the building for the investigators who had not been here before we set up by the original front door at the bottom of the staircase. While sitting here I heard movement in the room to my left. I was where I could see entirely into that room and no one was present.
Later in the evening Jennifer and Jenny set up one of the cells to play a game of cards as a possible trigger. I have video and audio of this and am reviewing both. If I find anything out of the ordinary I will post it.
Several of us felt as though there was an extra person with us most of the night. We did a head count several times.

Jennifer Sprague: On this investigation, I brought my notebook, a card deck as a trigger object, and a camera. Jenny and I did an EVP session in the jail with the EM Pump and role played cards as prisoners. During this we did not notice anything that would be deemed paranormal.
During the second EVP session at the base of the stairs, I did not notice anything paranormal although other members had experiences.
Besides feeling unusually anxious at the beginning of the investigation I did not notice anything I would say was paranormal.
I'm curious what others find on their audio equipment. Overall it was a quiet investigation for me.

Tania Marg: When we first entered the jail, I notice energy spots in several locations near the front door to the house as well as the second room to the right and an intense energy spot, almost electrical feeling or the feeling you get just before a large storm hits, near the staircase that lasted for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.  During out EVP session, I noticed some noises coming from the room with the butter churn and antique telephone in it that I could not explain as it did not seem to correlate with normal settling noises of the house, our group's noises, or outside noises.  I also heard whispering towards the end of our EVP session and noticed a cold spot near Lisa as well when she pointed it out to me.  There were a few times inside of the jail that I noticed energetic spots, but nothing paranormal happened and none of my photos from the evening showed anything out of the ordinary on them.  Overall, not a highly active evening for the jail.

Angela Hodge: When we first arrived I decided to go outside and take some photos of the house and jail side. I also wanted to get a feel for the area we were in. Maybe hear some sounds as there our houses now that surround this little rotary jail house now.
It seems sounds travel well in this area. So mental note that for later. Then I did a little walk through myself just to get a feel of the place. The energy was really positive when we were first arrived.
Once we started and did a group tour the energy was still positive. We went to the 2nd floor and I immediately felt off as I entered the first bedroom off the stairs. I felt off like my head was spinning and the room made me feel like I was up really high and it the flooring felt slanted a bit. As I went onward to the 2nd and 3rd bedroom those feelings subsided and the positive feelings came back. As we toured the rotary jail it gave off no feelings of life in the jail. It was quiet even after the 2nd and 3rd visit. The energy seem to not go in the jail area with us. It just felt stale and stagnant in the rotary part. I felt like all the energy was in the sheriff's quarters.
When we started our investigation I felt a young like child presence with us. Kind of like a child playing games by themselves. Just happy minding there own business and being happy type of feeling.
At times the staircase going up to the 2nd floor felt like someone was watching us.
Throughout the night I kept feeling like we had another woman with us, but all of us were present. Our group was only women this time and it just kept feeling like we were either missing a person or they were lagging, but definitely felt like we had someone with us the entire night.
At one point of the girls mentioned they felt what was soft rub up against them like a cat figure so I snapped a photo at the time. I am not 100% sure if I captured a cat figure or what.
We kept hearing different sounds in other rooms and not just one of us would hear it, but we all would hear it at times and the person closet to the room kept feeling like someone was in the room with them.
All in all its cool to visit and check out. It's worth the drive to see and visit all the other sites in the city. The town definitely has history and you can feel it.
