Answer: 8 years Question: When did the phenomena start? Answer: 1998/1999 Question: Any certain hour of the day or certain rooms? Answer: At night Question: Any visual apparations? Answer: Misty images, shadows, partial human shapes Question: Have there been any movements of objects that you see? Answer: Items fall off shelves Question: Any teleportation (things moving from one place to another)? Answer: Medicine bottles thrown (2 witnesses) Question: Any sounds? Answer: Voices, pounding on walls Question: Any rushes of wind? Answer: Yes Question: Did previous occupants, neighbors or landlords know of phenomena? Answer: None Question: How far back can you trace the history of the property? Answer: 1901 Investigators Notes Bryan Kaplan:Interesting house. It's my opinion that a lot of what takes place is happening around Josh and not the property. Nonetheless I did record some EVP. I do wish the environment was more controlled than it was. Kelli Patrick:I used Sony nightshot video, EMF detector, laser thermometer. My laser thermometer didn't detect any temperature changes at all throughout the house. My video camera was set up in the brother's bedroom at the front of the house. My video didn't catch anything unusual. We investigated the house and we stayed for awhile in the back bedroom that had the most activity. There was a sense that something was in the room with us. We did check the house for electrical interferences and the doorway that went into the back bedroom sent our EMF detectors off like crazy. It also was high around the left side of the bed (alot of electrical outlets next to the bed). This is our reasoning for increased activity in this room is all of the electrical energy leaking from the lines. This is going to be most likely the cause for the problems in the house, at least this room. Becky Ray:I had my video camera set up in the hallway pointed towards the bathroom and captured nothing unusual. My photos all came out normal. This home is built on the New Madrid fault, and has never been re-wired. We did discover a major electrical leakage in the bedroom directly next to the bed that would be responsible for headaches and possibly other health problems. Also, the power company spikes back up each night around 3am, which would explain why he is being awakened then. Miranda Stark:This house was built around 1901, and the electrical wiring has since never been updated. The home is located in an area on the New-Madrid fault line. And there is some underground water source from the Mississippi River flowing directly beneath the home. These factors all contribute to massive energies that are contained within the atmosphere of this living space. The first thing I noticed was the erratic EMF readings, especially in the main subject's bedroom. The problem with such high levels of EMF is the result of physical illness, and mind-altering effects. Long-term exposure to these fields can* even cause terminal disease. The subject is spending a great deal of time being exposed to EM fields while sleeping in his own bed at night. We were able to locate massive amounts of electrical leakage coming from the outlet beside the nightstand. The subject has complaints of experiencing headaches, and of being awakened at regular intervals on a nightly basis. Two possible theories exist with this case. 1) Mind-altering effects as a result of EMF overexposure 2) An existing energy source that is readily accessible to spirits for eased manifestation I captured no evidence to support theory number 2, yet I did capture enough to support theory number 1. The location is at such a distance from us, that follow-up investigative work is very unlikely, so we have what was gathered from that evening alone to base our conclusions upon. We did have an incident in the back bedroom where there was typing on the computer that could not be made out. I did take a picture of it. I'll post it. Bryan Kaplan:Further investigation needs to take place before I can give an opinion. I definately feel that the teenage son that lives at the residence is tied to the activity. I think his age (and him going through puberty) may be linked to the activity. I think a more controlled environment is necessary as well. Becky Ray:We conducted this investigation in collaboration with Ginger Collins from the Missouri History and Hauntings Society. A lot of the activity in this home seems to generate from the home office where the main computer is. One of the main reports of activity is hearing the computer keyboard clicking as if someone is typing on it when no one is in the room and most of the time the computer isn't even turned on. On the day of our investigation this had happened a few hours before we arrived and the computer had been on so what was typed was saved as a document. However what was typed seemed to be just gibberish. During our investigation I definitely felt a heaviness in this room when we first entered it. We played around with the keyboard to see what may have caused that type of sound, and to see if something such as the cat walking across the keyboard could have left the letters that were typed. What we found was that it would have taken someone typing with two hands to produce the letters with the shift key pressed. Overall, after talking with the homeowner and her son, I feel that this is definitely a place that requires an ongoing investigation to make any determinations, but I feel strongly that there is something going on. Many thanks to Ginger for inviting us along on this one! In 1857 Tim and Eliza Hersey, the founders and first inhabitants of Abilene, built a stone dugout where the Lebold Mansion stands today. The Hersey dugout was incorporated into the construction of the mansion's tower and has been preserved as part of the foundation located at the tower's base. Visitors can still view the dugout when touring the home. The Mansion has served many purposes over the years. In the 1920s, it was redecorated by C. L. Brown as a boarding house for the young female operators of his United Telephone Company. In 1930 it became an orphanage and served as an apartment building from 1940 to 1970. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It has survived the years intact and was maintained as a historic house museum from 1973 until 2010. It was considered by many to be one of the finest Victorian decorative art museums in the midwest. It has been featured in Victorian Homes Magazine and Victorian Decorating and Lifestyles Magazine. In 2000, The Lebold Mansion was sold to Victorian Interiors Restoration Service from San Francisco. They redecorated Its 23 rooms with period furniture, wallpaper, drapes, and other furnishings from their private collection. They used the Mansion as a showroom and tour house for the next ten years. Victorian Interiors sold the Mansion in 2010. It changed hands twice, and then in June 2021, the mansion was sold as a foreclosure. Thankfully approximately $750,000 worth of vintage period wallpaper remained, as well as an 8' x 8' commissioned painting on canvas of Venus and her servants that is mounted on the ceiling of one of the first-floor rooms. The current owner, Joseph Tatner, is a published author, professional business and technical writer, computer analyst, business and technical consultant, plus a professional actor, singer, dancer, director, choreographer, and producer with numerous credits, awards, and wide public recognition. Having worked in four different Ritz-Carlton Hotels, his goal for the mansion is to always provide a fun experience with something new to enjoy. He is attempting to renovate the property himself and started a Lebold Mansion GoFundMe page. Investigators Notes Jennifer, Lead Investigator: For this investigation, we started with a wonderful tour by Mr. Tatner. We then split up into groups with Sarah and me in the attic and Becky, Sarah, and Lindsey in the basement. Personal experiences by investigators in the attic: The feeling of hair being touched, witnessing an odd series of lights which we could not find a probable cause, the feeling of being touched which might have been spiderwebs - however, we did not find any in the area. The other area of interest was the original "dugout" under the tower. Not much of note was experienced by our team members here. Some camera fluctuations were odd; however, nothing was caught on the camera. At one point, Sarah smelled tobacco, but this may be due to the room being an older apartment where somebody smoked in the past. During this investigation, we also experimented with Automatic Writing—one group in the dugout area and one upstairs. Nothing was noted during the time. We will post document pictures soon. In spiritualism, automatic writing is produced involuntarily when the subject's attention is ostensibly directed elsewhere. The phenomenon may occur when the subject is alert, awake, or in a trance. None of our equipment recorded anything out of the ordinary. We had a camera set up downstairs and various motion-related objects. One fluctuation in the upstairs room with a motion-related object was unexplained, but nothing definite. We have one possible EVP caught in the attic by Sarah. Many investigators did experience battery drainage during this investigation. Lebold Mansion is a very beautiful place to investigate and worth checking out more than once. Mr. Tatner is a great host, and we hope to return soon!

I was using a Gauss Master and had done a preliminary sweep of the home, and when Jennifer and the home owner were discussing this dog my meter would slightly fluctuate. I returned to this same area later and could not reproduce this effect. Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I used my Olympus Digital Audio recorder. We began with a baseline emf reading of the main areas of the house and determined that there were no unusual spikes. The two main areas of focus, according to those that lived there, were the living room and basement area. Things reported at this location were both auditory and visual. We also set up an object control experiment in the kitchen using Kelli's camera since there was a report of a white mist like image that was reported being seen in there, as well as reports of things missing and then reappearing. We noticed nothing noticeable or apparent on the footage at the time, however there is still some footage to be reviewed. Since there were reports of auditory noises. We started with an e.v.p. session in the living room area and then traveled downstairs to the basement where sounds of screaming had been reportedly heard. During the time of the e.v.p. sessions there was nothing audibly heard, however, I am in the process of reviewing my recordings and believe I may have some questionable footage. Due to computer issues. EVPS are not able to be uploaded at this time. Another interesting thing to note, is that Becky noticed a slight spike on her emf meter when I was referencing the dogs that lived there. We could not find any apparent or logical reason why her emf would spike at that particular moment as we were not around anything that would have set it off. I would like to say thanks to the family for having us out there and I look forward to posting some footage soon! The group went to the 2nd floor first. I was testing my recorder - didn't catch anything - but beyond our chatter and EVP questions. As we entered the "Indian Artifact Room," I had an almost overwhelming feeling of a presence behind me. I turned to look, even though I was the last of us to enter the room—nobody/nothing there to see except for the creepy hat-man mannequin. I left my videocam recording a motion-activated ball and artifact display cases that reportedly sometimes move and/or vibrate with no apparent cause. They did neither this time, and the ball remained dark. 10pm - 11ish - Tack/Equipment Room, Basement We entered the room with lights out. Something was reacting strongly to Angela, and a lot of shadow play ensued. I only saw a more distant shadow pass several times in front of a covered window. They looked to be a good-sized, well-built male shadow but not being cast from outside the window. No reasonable explanation for the shadow. Notes from Becky: During our initial tour of the location, we were shown the areas of several hot spots without details. A few of the hotspots were: BASEMENT: the coal miner room, the jail cell next to the coal miner room, mild activity in the storage/refreshment room, and a "Big Guy" at the far end of the storage/refreshment room - the area that was once his cell. FIRST FLOOR: the hallway by the WWI room, the Black History Room, and Grandma's Kitchen (does not like men). SECOND FLOOR: There is reported activity in every room. Pettis Parlour is the most active. Other Rooms include the doctor's room, the Jesse James room, the "Bedroom," the Civil War room (cabinet door has opened once), the Native American Artifact room (Indian Relics), the Hallway to the School Room, and the School Room, and the Hallway behind the Fire door. At 8:15 pm, I set my motion camera by mannequins in the hallway towards the School Room. Items of note: While in the Pettis Parlour, I smelled food cooking. While in the WWI & WWII rooms area, I felt something was attached to one of the uniforms. While in the WWI room, several of us witnessed the "cat ball" on the cot triggered while talking about our Grandfathers' service records. At 10:09 pm, while she was alone in the WWII room, Jennifer reported hearing a "click" while no one else was near the room. At 10:25 pm, while we were in the "Tack" room in the basement, several of us felt a presence, and almost everyone saw movement and unexplained shadows around the door. While we were there, I saw what looked like a flesh-colored face lean in and look at us from the left side of the door. Upon inspection, it was clear there wasn't room for a person to be there, nor was anything that may have moved and given that impression. While we were in the Coal Miner Room, I felt someone playing with my hair and moving it in front of my face. When I would pull my hair back, I felt like my face was covered in spiderwebs. Around midnight when we returned to the "Tack" room, I took my strobe light and laser grid. The grid was too bright, so I unplugged it. While the strobe light was going, several of us saw some movement in the doorway; however, the feeling in that room was markedly different from when we were there earlier. Notes from Jennifer: In this investigation, I used my audio recorder and motion cams. I placed one of my motion cams on the first floor in the room across from the Native American Artifact room. This room had reported activity of a cabinet opening and closing by itself. At this time, my footage did not capture anything to note. I placed my second motion cam on the main floor in the Civil War Room. In this room, I set up my motion cam after we seemed to get some reactions to a motion-related object while talking about personal stories related to wartime. After viewing my footage, there was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. The reports in the hallway were of shadow figures and a sense of an overwhelming "presence." I used my audio recorder throughout the night. I did capture a possible EVP on the main floor. Many investigators had personal experiences throughout the night. We also had group experiences. This included seeing multiple shadow figures, responses to motion-activated objects, hearing disembodied voices and footsteps, and being touched. The basement area was where I had the most personal experiences. Times of interest of activity: 10:00-10:45PM- Tack Room: Basement Multiple people in the group, including myself, saw what seemed to be an odd shadow figure manifesting at different times at the doorway entrance to this room. This was happening so often that it was difficult to keep track of the times. There were also multiple temperature changes. At this time, other members also reported hearing footsteps. Other members reported feeling touched. I also heard what seemed to be movement behind Becky while sitting by her. We had a motion-triggered object placed by the door, but it was never triggered. Sarah also had her camera facing the door. We ruled out that it was the position of the door and its frame that was causing any odd shadow movement. We later returned with a strobe light to see if it could enhance what we were seeing, and we still saw similar things, although it was less active than before. 10:45PM- 11:25PM Storage/Refreshment Room/Basement After we left the Tack Room, we entered another area of the basement. I experienced so many odd shadow movements in this room and noises from the hallway, while others reported hearing odd noises. The strange thing was that every time I would see what looked like somebody walking by and blocking out a light source, Becky would see only light at that specific moment. I did my best to see if I could find a logical reason for what could be causing shadow movement. There were no shadows of trees outside that would mimic movement. I also had Sarah stand where I was standing, and I moved to the other side to see if we could correlate or recreate what I was seeing. Notes from Sarah: Upstairs We started the evening upstairs in the Native American Artifact room. Honestly, I didn't feel anything there, so I left the room so others could set up and do what they wanted without me in the way. The Civil War room had felt off to me, so I went ahead and stepped in there. Jennifer and I both commented that we heard random stuff in that area. After being in there for a while, I think all the weird feelings I had were because all the flags and stuff hanging on the wall made the space seem extra dark and more claustrophobic. Also, it's full of confederate things, which always feels yucky. My videos audio picked up a humming sound at 8:12. We went down the hall that has the schoolroom and band room at the end. Jennifer and I stopped in the area behind the fire door for a few, but it felt pretty calm. Jennifer and I both heard tapping sounds during our time in this room, but it may have been other people clicking their flashlights on and off. My video's audio did pick up what sounds like two whistles before Jennifer said flash while in this space. We decided to meet back up with the rest of the group down the other hall. Stopping in the rooms as we went. Angela felt drawn to either the parlor or the doctor's office room. I will say I felt like I didn't want to go into the doctor's room. It could be a tiny room, but I didn't want to be there. We spent some time in the parlor room as a group, and nothing seemed to happen. Most of the group walked out, and I was in the room with the smiling mannequin lady. Angela was the last one to leave the hall area. She came to us saying that she felt like something was chasing her out of that area, so she rushed out. This made the rest of us want to go back there. I walked down to the end of the hall, and Jennifer commented that she saw a light go past. She had me walk back the way I had to try and see if we could recreate what she saw, but it didn't happen again. When walking back towards where the halls meet up, near the Morman room, I felt like something touched the front part of my hair. Like it was being pushed back. First Floor Grandma's Kitchen had a comfortable feeling. The only strange thing that happened there was that Jennifer felt like something touched her ponytail. She didn't appear to be standing close enough to the items behind her to have bumped them. The WWII room was interesting. I was there with Becky, Jennifer, and Angela. I placed a motion-activated ball on the cot. We were talking about our grandfathers and their time in the military. I started to feel pressure in the middle of my chest, which I commented on, and a couple of seconds after, the motion-activated ball lit up. We could not get it to do this again, and this is the only time it lit up the whole evening. In my opinion, whatever is in the room is attached to something there. Stairs I set up my camcorder, pointing to the main stairs later in the evening. I didn't capture anything of interest visually. The audio picked up pops and clicks throughout the time it was running. I was even able to hear the back door being opened once. Twice there were loud bangs near the camera. It sounds like the sound is coming from right behind the video camera. Basement The Tack Room was the most interesting. I kept seeing a dark figure peak around the in from the doorway. I saw it on both sides of the door frame. At one point, I saw what looked like a tall, dark shadow standing between the horse statue and Angela. Almost like it was standing over Angela. Angela said she felt like someone was standing over her, and she was visibly uncomfortable. She even put her hoody up and moved her body closer to Becky. She also said it felt like someone touched her shoulder blade area and was messing with her hair. I continued to see shadows peaking around the door. As we left this room, we saw a nickel on the ground next to Angela's chair. No one remembers seeing it earlier. I placed my camcorder on the main stairs right before we headed to the basement, so I don't have any video to review this area. Next, we went to what they call Jim or John's room with a comfortable couch. It is mainly used for storage now. I heard a rustling sound to my right while sitting on the sofa. It was loud enough that it startled me. Angela heard it too. I checked and couldn't find an explanation for the sound. While I was standing up, scanning the area for the sound, I heard what sounded like someone sitting down on the sofa. Several times while in this area, I thought I heard someone talking. Hopefully, someone has audio of these sounds because my recorder was not recording. We then went to the coal mine room. Who doesn't love a room that has been made to look like a coal mine, complete with an armless miner and bats? Besides our sweet singing, the main thing of interest that happened there was that Becky felt like something was messing with her hair, and she felt like cobwebs were brushing her face. She said it felt like someone was pushing her hair in front of her face. I felt like my hair was brushed a couple of times, but not as much as Becky, whom it was happening to so much that she seemed annoyed with it. We ended our time at the Ray County Museum by going back to the tack room in the basement. I tried to set up my video recorder, but the battery was almost dead, and the IR light was utterly dead. We experimented with a strobe light. I still seemed to see some movement around the doorway but didn't feel the same as the first time we were there. After we finished there, we collected our equipment and left the building around 12:30 am. Overall it was a great place with some interesting activity. I want to go back at some point and do another investigation. I find it interesting that 4 of us felt like our hair was messed with there. For the most part, it felt like whatever was in the space was curious about us or enjoyed messing with us. If I get the chance to go back, I would like to set up a video camera in the tool room on a tripod while down there. And I would want to spend more time in Jim/John's area and the WWII room. The rooms are small for the most part, so breaking up into groups of two or three and going to different floors would work well. Notes from Angela: We started on the 3rd floor in what is the Native American artifact room. At first, I felt drawn to the room, but at the same time, it could have been the civil war room. We stayed in each room for a bit doing an EVP session and taking photos. We went back to the area twice and I never really felt or noticed anything that alerted me that made me feel like the rooms had anything in them. We moved onward and took a look at a few other rooms on one side. Then we went to the other side and checked out the Mormon room, post office room, doctor room, and parlor room. As we were ready to move, we left the hallway. I was the last to leave the hallway, and I immediately felt like someone was pushing me out of the way. The others walked back down there to see if they felt anything, and I don't believe they did. We decided to move to the 1st floor and check out each room. We went into the first military room, and after a few minutes, one of the motion-activated balls lit up while we were talking about our grandfathers being in the military. We laughed and joked about things when I felt maybe something was also in the room with us. We couldn't fully tell. We moved on to the basement and went to the tool room or tack room. Once we were settled down, we acknowledged that we could hear the clicking of the pipes, but within 5 minutes, I started to feel anxious and like something was in the room with us. My back was to the door a bit. I felt as if something was in the room with us. At that time, I felt something brush up against my hand holding my recorder. Within about 2-3 minutes later, I felt a little bit of pressure on the back of my armpit area. At that moment, other people saw a dark shadow behind me. I already felt anxious, and I felt like I needed to curl up and away from the side area. The temperature in the room felt like it had dropped. I had my recorder going. I'm hoping I caught something. I exchanged seats with Jennifer so that she could maybe experience what I felt in the same seat. Once we changed seats, my experience went away. The room temperature changed slightly, but not like it was before. After a while, we decided to stop and check the door area since a few people saw shadows, and we needed to check a few things. My experience there was pretty good. I haven't been to a place that gave me all the thrills and excitement and feeling slightly scared. I recommend checking out the museum and helping them out by donating when you visit. LOCATION HISTORY The Ray County Museum building was built as a county home (poor farm) in 1910 at the cost of $19,491, which included wiring, plumbing, & heating. Built in the shape of a "Y" with 14,424 square feet of floor space, the building has three floors with 54 rooms, eight masonry walls that are 14″ thick up to the roof, and fire doors at the wing entrances. The side porches are approximately 200 square feet each. The building rectangle would cover 1/3 of an acre. It was used as a Poor Farm until the 1960s and was used as a nursing home until the early 1970s. In the 1970s, the building became the Ray County Museum. from https://raycountymuseum.org/ Previous Investigations at this Location: Ray County Museum - 23 July 2010 EVPS PHOTOS Ray County Museum Ray County Museum Sign photo by Jennifer Investigation Team The team, minus Angela, for this investigation. We then set up equipment for the Raudive diode experiment in the parlor room and other equipment throughout the house. Including various cameras, motion sensors, as well as recorders. We started as a group in the parlor for the EVP and Raudive Diode experiment (see the video for explanation). All members stood in a circle and each member repeated a personal question asked by another member that was repeated in a circle. This lasted approximately 20 or so minutes in which an odd thump noise was reported coming from where Becky was standing. We did two separate EVP sessions in which we focused on serious questions for the first half then a light-hearted banter for the second half. We were curious to see if either session produced EVPs. No EVPs were recorded during this time and nothing was reported in either the regular recorders or the one with the diode. We then did group EVP sessions in the Children's Room and Mannequin Room with no personal EVP results. However, three investigators reported slight physical ailments all on the top floor. Tania initially reported feeling dizzy on top of the stairs, I reported feeling uneasy upon walking in the children's room for a split second and Neshela reported during the tour feeling queasy upon entering the mannequin room during the pre-tour. We then broke up into separate groups. Times of interest reported: Tania: 9:42 PM -Pipe smell of tobacco upstairs Becky:: 9:05-9:10 PM- Reported hearing someone walking downstairs. Becky: 9:30 PM- Becky heard a woman sigh in the Dining Room area. 10:24-10:26 PM- Lindsey reported an odd blip in her phone as if somebody touched the screen( all phones were in airplane mode to prevent disturbance) 10:29 PM Loud thumps were reported again in the Parlor by a music box. 10:44 PM- Another thump was reported by the music box by various investigators. Also to note, Becky’s camera shut off randomly in the parlor room after our EVP session. Madz and Jennifer also spent time upstairs sitting in a chair that was reported to have activity. Neither of us felt anything notable. Other observations: A possible explanation of random sounds were coming from the front door and doorknob as the wind rattled, however, others who reported having experiences with hearing noise said that the noises they heard were not coming from the door. We compared noises to determine if they were similar to reports of individual investigators. We will continue to add any other info as it comes in from investigators as this will be an ongoing investigation. Overall, it was a nice investigation and we look forward to going back! Big thank you to Alana and the Westport Historical Society for allowing us to come out! Location History As Kansas City’s oldest brick home, the 1855 Harris-Kearney House preserves the history of Westport and the Town of Kansas. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Harris-Kearney House Museum illustrates the lives of the first residents and their contributions to the formation of the greater KC area. Colonel John and Henrietta Harris migrated from Kentucky in 1832 with their family and settled in the West Port area. Their first home consisted of a four-room log house on a farmstead located on the site of present-day 39th Street and Gillham Road. John prospered and became the proprietor of The Harris House Hotel in West Port. In 1855, John and his wife Henrietta built a two-story, all brick, Greek revival house “on a ridge just east of town.” The grand home was known as the “Mansion House.” The bricks and millwork for the mansion were made on the premises by African American slaves. Originally, Col. Harris’ mansion stood on 5 acres of land at the southwest corner of the intersection of present-day Westport Road and Main Street. The mansion house faced northwest overlooking the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trail (at this juncture, the road carried traffic servicing all three destinations). After Col. Harris’ death in 1873, his son-in-law, Col. Charles E. Kearney, moved his family into the house so his wife, Josephine (Harris) Kearney, could care for her mother, Henrietta. The ell or back wing of the house was added to accommodate the Kearney’s five children. Mrs. Harris lived in her “mansion house” until her death in 1881. The Kearney family lived in the house for the next twenty-eight years. In 1922, the house was moved in two sections to its current location which was, in later years, part of the Gottfried Homung’s vineyard. The Westport Historical Society acquired the home in 1976 and restored the original 1855 portion of the house as a house museum that includes the Westport Society headquarters, a visitor’s center, and a small meeting space. from https://www.westporthistorical.com/harris-kearney-house PHOTOS Photo by Tania Preinvestigation Exterior Photo by Jennifer Photo by Tania Photo by Tania 1/26 VIDEOS

We also set up three cameras upstairs: one at the top of the stairs with a trigger toy ball to see if we could capture it moving, as reports have stated, and trail cams in the closet and attic to capture any movement or shadows. We also set up motion detectors and audio recorders in the bathroom to capture any movement or possible EVPS. Audio recorders were set up in the room under the attic and in the doll room with the bookshelf, where we also set up a camera. We created a period EVP session in the room under the attic. Julie brought in period clothing and era-related pieces to see if we could get an EVP response. I had her ask questions to John Warren as if she were the murdered victim, Adeline. I wanted to see if that would trigger any reaction as he stayed in the attic. She also asked questions related to the war that was taking place during that time. I also did an EVP role-playing session as Mary, Adeline’s daughter, who found her murdered, to see if that triggered a response. After Julie’s EVP session, the door to that room locked somehow. We tried to find an explanation but could not. We are currently reviewing audio and camera footage and will post anything we find. Downstairs we set up a green grid light to see if we could capture any of the shadows reported in the x-ray room. We also played a looped recording of saloon music in the other room to see if that would trigger any activity since the downstairs area would be where a bar was. Also, downstairs Becky did an EVP session and role-played Sarah, who stayed there at the hotel and was said to have murdered her husband with arsenic. It was a very windy night, making some of the audio hard to distinguish. My audio did not capture any EVPs. The only strange thing that happened to my camera in the attic is that it somehow shut off by itself in the attic, the battery was fully charged, so I felt that was somewhat odd. We want to thank Rob for allowing us to come out, and we look forward to going back soon! Location History The Garnett House was built in 1858 by D.W. Houston and was opened as a hotel by Hiram Tefft in the fall of that year. The building sits at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Walnut in Garnett, Kansas. The building was the first hotel in town and had several additions built onto the building. It was said that Mrs. Houston refused to move into the original structure due to its swaying in the breeze. The hotel became known as The Garnett House and the Lighthouse Hotel due to its bright lantern on the top floor, which could be seen for miles at that time. It is the only surviving antebellum structure in the town of Garnett, Kansas. As a hotel, the building has been a witness and a participant in many events in its nearly 160-year history. During the time known as “Bleeding Kansas,” it is said that the famous Abolitionist John Brown hid escaped enslaved people in the attic of the home. This is said to have happened around 1859, just before the American Civil War. During the 1870s, the town of Garnett became a crossroads of settlers headed West, cowboys, and citizens. It literally became the scene out of the Old West with saloons, brothels, and gunfights in the streets. During this time, the hotel hosted some of its most famous guests. The guest list includes famous lawmen Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Wild Bill Hickock. It also includes renowned scout Buffalo Bill Cody who was traveling with Hickock at that time. Belle Starr, the famous female cowboy shooter, was also a hotel guest. The famous outlaw Jesse James was also rumored to have stayed here under one of his many aliases. After this time, the hotel eventually became a private residence once more prominent, and more modern hotels began to appear in the town of Garnett. In the early 1950s, the building became the Doctor’s Office of Dr. Robert Stevens and his wife, Dr. Julius-Stevens. They treated patients in the old hotel up until the 21st Century. It was built in 1889. It is one of the three remaining rotating jails in the United States. One is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa and the other in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Upon entering the jail, you will find the Sheriff's living quarters. This is the only jail to have the Sheriff's living quarters attached. The first part of the jail that can be entered is the jail kitchen. The Sheriff's wife would cook for the inmates, as well as her family. The original hand crank is still in place, as well as the "grub hole" which is where the inmates' food was put through. The inside of the jail is very unique. The door still opens to let the prisoners in and out of, however, it does not turn anymore. One side of the jail is still intact with the bars still up and the other side is open to where you can see and go into the actual jail cells. The walls are covered with graffiti from past inmates. A donation to the Jail is greatly appreciated!!! For a tour of the jail please contact Trudi Burton @660-663-7342. Investigators Notes Becky Ray: This was our first investigation at this location after visiting for a day tour. We had some activity almost immediately. Lisa and I heard a male voice responding to Jennifer. The funny part was it only responded to Jennifer. I never could make out what it was saying, but Lisa thought she heard something to the effect of "I wonder what they are doing here." We seemed to have the most activity on the staircase. We're still going over audio and video from the night. Jennifer Sprague: This investigation was, for the most part, quiet for me. There were a couple of occurrences where I thought I heard a disembodied voice coming from downstairs, but could not determine without a doubt what was not something explanatory. I do look forward to going back and investigating again. Many thanks to Trudi for her hospitality and generosity. Lisa Sperry: Very quiet evening. I did hear a man's voice say "what are they doing here" in front of the door in the downstairs entryway. I cannot be sure that it wasn't coming from outside. Answer: Nothing confirmed, but there was a possible murder in the neighborhood that may have been in this house. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:Thanks Overland Park family for allowing us to visit and investigate. We did our intinal walk-thru tour of the home. Upon entering the home I notice immediatly after walking thru the doorway entrance to the family room that I felt dizzy and out of place as I stopped by the doorway to the basement. As we continued thru-out the house I noticed as I walked up the stairs to the 2nd floor the stairway to me felt like it was closing up on me. As I entered what is now the master bedroom to the right of us. I noticed the room had a different feel and smell then the stairway and the hallway. I did not noticed any plug-ins or aroma devices in the room. As we continued onward down the hallway the hallway was very long and that connected the other 3 rooms. The hallway gave off a werid vibe as you walked down it but nothing that triggered anything. As we entered each room nothing really got my attention. As we continued onward downstairs to the basement and to the backyard again nothing popped out at me to grab my attention enough. I do want to note as we did walk thru the house it had a feeling of heaviness unlike when we left it was light and airy and a comfortable feeling. Want to make note that when we toured the backyard we were shown a little pet cemetary that the neighbors built due to there pet cat was killed by another neighbor in the area. Strange to fence off an area versus just growing a tree or planting something nice in that area. The cemetary had nothing to do with the people who live in this house now, but it was an odd thing to see at investigation. We decided to start up stairs in the master bedroom. At one point I heard a cat meowing but it was a very long drawn out meow, kind of like it was stuck in a room for a long period of time. At that time Becky checked out the window to see if any cats were outside and none could be seen. We thought if we put out a string it might attract a cat to come out and be playful but we don't think it worked. I noticed as we left the room a smell was different then in the hallway. The room did not look to be an orginal bedroom maybe a storage closet at one time that was redone to be a master bedroom. We decided to move on down the last bedroom to the left of the hallway and do some EVP since the owner's sister mentioned that her purse was moved at one time from the dresser to the stero stand. When I entered the room my head began to feel dizzy and out of place again. It subsided after a while but I felt uneasy in the room and decided to stand instead of sit on the floor. At times i felt like I needed to brace my self and kept one hand up on the bathroom doorway wall. Becky decided to use her Gauss meter the meter would flucuate from a one to almost a 3 at times when we would ask it questions in any general, but when we associated it with the family on questions it would spike a bit more. When we decided to go back down stairs we were introduced to the sister at that time I asked what time she arrived and around that time we just entered the sister's bedroom. While in the bedroom we asked a question which at this time I do not recall what the question was but I felt a very heavy sigh or breathe blown into my ear that I made a comment about that gave me a chill and goosebumps. The sigh or breathe came from behind me and the bathroom was behind me. When we decide to head back up stairs the 2nd time to check the room out the sister had already left prior to that and we all made the comment the bedroom felt different then prior visit as if nothing was there with us this time. We checked out the basement and nothing could be noticed or noted as the basement was very calm and relaxed feeling. I did note that my tape recorder died while downstairs after we had already been upstairs. I thought it was recording while downstairs but to my surprise it was not. I just put new batteries in the recorded before I left the house. I checked the batteries at home and they work just fine in other equipment. After a conversations with the owners the house seem to quiet down and we decided that it was time to leave. I made a few comments to the owners that they should check out and see if it makes a difference when certain things happens that trigger certain feeling of uneasiness. All in all I believe something is there but what not sure. I did try to agitate it to get something out of it maybe that's why I felt the sigh in my ear not sure. Thanks again for allowing us to come in and investigate. If you have questions please contact us again. Becky Ray:On this investigation I used my video camera, 35mm still camera, and a Gauss meter. We started the evening with a tour of the home, and during this time I heard what sounded like a person in the upstairs bathroom, although everyone present was with us. After the walk-through from the residents, we started in the upstairs bedroom where they reported seeing a woman, and feeling a cat get into bed with them. While we were there, both Angela Z. and myself heard what sounded like a cat cry. It wasn't just a meow, it was a long cry as if the cat was trapped someplace and wanted out. Shortly after this both Kevin and Jennifer reported hearing an unclear voice. Since they had reported feeling a cat and at times seeing a cat in the home, I dangled a string just as an experiment to see if we got any response. At times the string did appear to "jerk," but I'm not certain that wasn't from my own hand shaking. An aside to note from the master bedroom was that as I scanned the room for initial EMF readings, half of the bed was reading around 2-3 milligauss, while the other side had none. I checked all the electronic appliances and couldn't find a source, but this reading remained the same the entire time we were present, so there probably is a cause. The residents report that the upstairs hallway makes them feel strange, and we all had the same type of feeling. When we stepped out into the hall from the master bedroom, we immediately noticed the smell was quite different. I did not see any air fresheners that would account for this difference, and this smell was not present later in the evening. When we entered the second bedroom, I again scanned for EMF, and found that the bed in this room was like the other one, where half the bed read between 1-3 milligauss, and the other half was clean. While the meter was sitting at a 1 I placed it in a stationary spot on the bed, we began asking questions to attempt to gather EVPs. Several times during this the meter reacted to the questions by moving up to a 2-3. Jennifer and I both heard a knock on the wall while we were in this room. Angela and myself heard a loud sigh come from the bathroom just behind us. It was later learned that while we were in this room, the resident to sleeps there came home. When we returned to the room after she left, it was like a totally different place. Other than another knock on the wall, we had no further experiences. The residents have reported hearing footsteps on the staircase to the basement, and a shadow person has also been seen there. I set my video camera on the staircase, and we attempted to obtain more EVPs from the basement. While we were down there, Angela's batteries completely died in her audio recorder - even though they were new batteries at the beginning on the investigation. This is definitely a home of interest, and I appreciate the owners allowing us to conduct this investigation. I am still reviewing my video and photos, as well as the audio from my camera. Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I was note taker for the group and I also brought my 35mm disposable camera. We started off with a tour of the house and noted the areas of the house that seemed to be the main areas where activity was reported. We started off in the master bedroom with some base readings and we didnt note anything to be unusual. The only thing somewhat strange was the fact that the Gauss meter seemd to react to only one side of the bed ( it also did this in another room) we could not locate anything that would make it give off a consistent reading like that. Since the reading was consistent there probably was an explanation for it, but at the time we could find none. Since there were reported apparitions of animals being seen, we tried to set up some animal type things for them to play with..at one point we did notice that the string that Becky was holding moved in an unusual way..we made sure there was no effect of an outside wind and Becky was holding her hand straight..at one point the string did seemed to be batted by something because it made a significant movement. Angela and Becky birth heard a meow and I, at one point, thought I heard an inaudible sound. The main area of the house that I believe we had the most activity in was in the sister's room. We took readings of the room with a Guass meter and noticed that for some reason it seemed to be more active pointing in one direction..it is interesting to note that we started a conversation in the room and all the sudden the meter started to register a 2, the more we talked and with the certain questions we asked, the more it seem to fluctuate. and at one point I thought I heard a knock behind me.. Becky noted this too. It was reported in this room that an object was moved..so we set up a camera and filmed the Gauss meter while we were asking questions. We asked if there was anybody present if they could move it..it did not seem to move, but the meter's readings were definitely fluctuating and at one point Angela believed she heard a sigh. After we left the room it was told to us that the sister had come home adn when we went to return the room was not as active and felt 'lighter' to all of us. I thought it was interesting to note the differant feel of the room as we returned. Overall, I think this was an interesting invesigation and I cant thank the owners enough for letting us come out. A BIG thank you to them! and I look forward to going back! Im in the process of developing photos and if I come across anything interesting I will definitely post them! So much history resides in this business and you can tell they kept up the history of this place for all the years that it has been in place. After are intial walk-thru and few us starting our readings with equipment and picture taking. We started off with an EVP session, which started off pretty good. I started hearing chattering noises near the front entrance like a crowd just entered the establishement. I could not make out what they were saying but it sounded like a huge crowd. Then that subsided and when were asking questions during an EVP session I started to hear a mans voice toward the kitchen area. I was trying to understand him when all of sudden I hear "Oh Crap" like as if someone just dropped something and they didn't mean to. After a while we moved our group to the basement which is where the banquet room is. Upon starting an EVP session I started to hear chattering again. But still unable to understand them. It was like being at a concert or very loud bar. Every one is talking but your not understanding or be able to focus on one conversation because is so loud in there. That is how it felt inside of my head. I had to restrain myself a few times to not talk to loud as in the room it was pretty quiet with us. We continue onward with the EVP session. We noticed that the more we asked question the water from the drains would continuely drip to a constance slow flow of water trickling. When we would end the EVP session the water would stop or go to a slow drip. It started back up agin later in a 2nd EVP session later in the night. As we doing this EVP session, I could hear a band upstairs playing. But no one was upstairs, it was not open at this time. I could hear a man and a woman, a woman was trying to sing and talk at the same. I could hear a constant thumping of the base of the drum. It sounded like a concert was about to start, kind of like a crowd started thump of the drums. It continue thru-out the whole EVP session. A few time I could feel the presence of someone standing in the middle of the room of all of us. At one point I bluntly could here " you guys are all so silly for doing this" It sounded like a mans voice kind of heckling us. I could hear a laugh with it as it was a deep laugh too. Every time our group would move about in the basement all of the energy would completly go away, but as soon as we settled down it would slowly pick up. I kept getting the feeling they were watching us and trying to figure out what we doing. A few times I felt a presence near the bar area down stairs. When our group went to look over there some one behind took a photo as I was about to take a photo with my own camera. As I said Flash her camera flashed and I snapped my photo at the same time and when I looked in the window of the camera I could see a outline of a shadow at that point. Becky pointed to the area at the same time and mentioned that she thought she saw something. Nothing showed up on the photo. DARN you know. As we presided upstairs to the other half of the establishment I bluntly could see a white shadow mist like in the corner of the room. I guess this is where the waitress gather drinks. You can see in and they can see out, there is no window just a brick arch way is there. I kept getting a feeling a woman was there staring back at us. I tried to ask her who she was and why she was there. She just stared back at me. I got a feeling she was nurse or something silimar. She wore a white cap like on her head and a white dress or uniform on her. She also looked sad and confused. Other then that the resturant side had nothing else going on. A few time others would hear sounds in the hall way that connects each establishment but I did not. When we entered back into the bar side of the establishement and did a 2nd EVP session. I could hear music out of the speakers that were shut off, earlier in the night Bryan could hear country music or something with a country sound to it coming out of the upstairs speakers. I just heard music that i could not make it out. It cut out to quick. I also heard the drumming again along with a woman singing. She began to shout and you a few times we all heard the same thing. That last area we visited was the apartment attached to the upstairs of the bar area. My senses were being blocked by all the mold and dust in the abandoned apartment. It was pretty much left as is since the 1980's a few sink and tubs still look like the era of the 50-60's which was pretty cool looking. I snapped a few photo's but only got dust orbs, again my senses were being overloaded so I had to step outside pretty quick to breathe fresh air. All in all this place was awesome, I loved to come back just to prove what I heard and sensed in the establishment. I know I will go back just as a patron as the menu looked really enticing to try. Thanks again it was a pleasure to be there and witness all the events that occured. I do not believe that what is there is negetative or harmful any in way. I believe it is residual and gives the place it's history. Angela Kaplan:Kept seeing stuff by the bathrooms down on the main floor. The bad part was that there was someone present who was smoking; which is a no no on investigations (it was not an investigator smoking). I hope we return in the near future. Bryan Kaplan:I found this to be an interesting investigation. There is definately some paranormal activity at this particular location. There was some EVP phenomena found as well. I definately believe a second visit (with video) would be a great idea. Becky Ray:On this investigation I used a digital camera capable of video and still images. Almost immediately after arriving at the location things started to happen. As the owner gave us a walk-through tour Miranda and Jennifer heard a bang coming from the restaurant area. Everyone in the building was with us in the bar area. As Miranda did a sweep of the bar for EMF baseline readings, she reported a high reading near where Bryan was saying he had an odd feeling. This location was in the normal range for the rest of the night. While we sat vigil in the bar area several people present started hearing the sounds of people talking, like you expect to hear in a bar, only no one was present. In the banquet room it was reported that the owner's son had seen a purplish "orb" move through the room. We went to this area next. We sat vigil there and people continued to report hearing voices, and several people started hearing music playing. As I asked questions to try to obtain EVP, there seemed to be some sort of reaction to my questions. Sometimes different people would hear a voice response, and sometimes we would just hear knocks. Sometimes the voice heard would sound female, and other times it would be a definite male voice. I heard what sounded like soft soled shoes walking across the floor back in the corner of the room. Angela Collins heard what she described as piano music, while Angela Zangara said she was hearing a guitar and/or a an entire band. After discussing hearing both a male and female voice, I asked if anyone else was present. Several of us, myself included heard an audio response of, "I am!" When we changed positions in the room, it seemed to stop the activity, but as we were checking out the back area where I had heard footsteps, Angela Z saw a shadow in the flash from another person's camera. Unfortunately nothing was captured in any of the photos. Before leaving this area we set up a few cups for a control experiment to see if anything was moved when we returned. The apartments above the business have not been used for anything but storage for nearly 30 years, but yet footsteps of people walking around are heard in the bar area. We went up and checked this area out, but didn't spend a lot of time there due to the dusty conditions. However as I stood in the doorway to one of the rooms I saw the figure of a dark haired Caucasian male standing in the corner of the room next door. I immediately turned and took a photo but nothing appeared. When we return I hope to come prepared to spend more time in this area. We are still reviewing photos and audio recordings from this night, and I'm excited to return! Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I was note taker for the group and I also brought my 35 ml disposable camera for pictures. I do have to say that many interesting things happened on this investigation. We had some interesting fluctation in electro magnetic field spikes during various evp sessions and at one point a high spike in one area around Bryan at a time when he said he felt something strange. Numerous investigators at one time or the other heard some sort of music playing as well as a male and female voice. Various knocks and ticks were hear to and some of them seemed to be in response to our evp questions. For me personally, I did hear at times what sounded like a faint piano playing and inaudible talking, I could not, at the time, tell if it was a man or a woman, however, at one point I did hear a strong presence of a voice and what seemed like a woman's sigh, and it was so audible at the time that it took me completely by surprise. Through out the night other investigators did appear to be feeling presences and noticing images and shadow like figures of people as well on this investigation. I did not notice anything or feel anything strange throughout the rest of the investigation until I came to a certain room in an abandoned area on top of the location we were at, but it soon faded. At this time I am in the process of reviewing pictures taken from the investigation and awaiting to review other evidence. I will post pictures if I find anyting interesting. I really look forward to going back to this location for a follow up investigation!! Miranda Stark:I think we can all agree that this was one active location, if for nothing else but at least the residual energies. During the first group EVP session, the majority (if not everyone) present was witness to numerous voices, and even music. We were all startled by some of these voices at times, for how clearly they could be heard. Most of the time, it seems as though we were being joined by an unseen female presence, though at a few times, we all specifically heard a strong male voice struggling to be heard in short, single syllable responses to our questions. Also, I had my EMF (electromagnetic field) detector set up on the table to monitor atmospheric fluctuations during the session, and it seemed to reveal some very iteresting responses at certain times of questioning. Though my photographs during this particular EVP session were unsuccessful in producing the image of any of our invisible friends, they made themselves known to everyone in various other ways, including two visual manifestations which appeared to at least two other investigators later in the evening. None of my photos from this location during the entire investigation turned up any evidence. This location seems to have it's fair share of activity in my opinion, and I will place my vote hands-down on some residual energy being contained here, if not even possibly at least one or maybe two inteligent presences. I hope some of the other investigators were able to capture evidence to support this. While standing there I saw what appeared to be a dark haired Caucasian man standing in corner of the room next door. I immediately took this photo. Coffee Pot - 10:42 PM It was reported to us that one of these coffee pots was seen by customers flying from the coffee maker to the table directly in front of it. The pot was not broken. The Dining Room - 11:59 PM All of the activity in the dining area has been reported behind this bar. White mists and shadows have been seen moving back and forth behind here. Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail Location Information Date:1st May, 2010 Type:Business Location Title:Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail City/State:Council Bluffs, IA Investigation Times:08:00 PM - 11:45 PM Status:Analysis Weather Information Sunrise:06:20 AM Sunset:08:20 PM High Temperature:71 °F Low Temperature:46 °F Sky Condition:Clear Wind:SW at 11 mph Humidity:72% Precipitation:0% Lunar Phase:Waning Gibbous % disk visible:80% Solar X-Rays:Normal Geomagnetic Field:Storm Pressure:29.53 mmHg Investigators Present Christina Anderson Angela Hodge Becky Ray Kevin Simpson Location History From the Historical Society of Pottawattomie County: The Jail was built in 1885 and was in continuous use until 1969. It was acquired by the Council Bluffs Park Board in 1971 for preservation, and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 by the United States Government. The Historical Society led an effort in 1977 to save the jail, and today owns and operates the facility. The design and size of the Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail make it a one-of-a-kind structure. It was one of 18 revolving (“squirrel cage”, "human rotary", or "lazy Susan") jails built. It is the only three-story one ever built. Built at a cost of about $30,000, our unique jail has three floors of revolving pie-shaped cells inside a cage. The front part of the building had offices for the jailer, kitchen, trustee cells, and quarters for women. The design was the invention of William H. Brown and Benjamin F. Haugh, both of Indianapolis, Indiana. A patent issued to them on July 12, 1881, declared, "The object of our invention is to produce a jail in which prisoners can be controlled without the necessity of personal contact between them and the jailer." It was to provide "maximum security with minimum jailer attention." As one deputy put it, "If a jailer could count... and he had a trusty he could trust... he could control the jail." The cell section remains much as it did in 1969 when it was closed by the county. The signatures and dates of many of its infamous prisoners remain scratched in the cell walls. It remains a well restored snapshot of an interesting era of our society. Today, only 3 revolving jails remain: a one-story structure in Gallatin, Missouri; a two-story jail in Crawfordsville, Indiana; and the unique three-story jail here. All three are preserved as museums. The Squirrel Cage Jail provides students and adults the opportunity to experience first-hand a unique piece of cultural and architectural history and to gain an understanding of this building’s unique place in cultural and national history. Its one-of-a-kind structure is unlikely to be duplicated again. Investigators Notes Christina Anderson:Thank you to the Pottawatomie County Historical Society for allowing us to investigate this Victorian-Era jail. This was the second trip for me to the Squirrel Cage. I had gone a year prior, and had experienced some activity. However, this investigation was a quiet one. When we arrived, we were given a tour of the entire facility, including the jailer’s quarters on the fourth floor. Afterwards, we set up and began the investigation upstairs. A previous team that visited had recorded footage of an armoire door opening by itself on video recorded using night vision. We also experienced this, but it was able to be attributed to an uneven floorboard. If someone so much as shifted their weight from one foot to another, the door would open. There was one incident in the jailer’s quarters where two of us witnessed some shadow movement, but it was not repeated the rest of the evening. Overall, this was a very quiet night. Becky Ray:I was completely fascinated with this location for the history alone. However we did have a few interesting things happen during the night. Early in the investigation we all smelled a cherry tobacco type of smell and we could not trace its origin. My cameras completely quit working for a large portion of the time we spent in the jail area, and Kevin's flash quit working. Other than that it was a fairly standard investigation. I'm interested in what we may have on audio. Kevin Simpson:On this investigation I used a Coolpix 10 megapixel digital camera and video camera. This was a quiet investigation. I loves the building and all of the past in and around the building had alot of potential. Did have a few things happen, but most could be explained. There was a smell early on that we couldnt find the source of. Saw a few shawdows throughout the night but got nothing on video or still camera No EVPS for this Investigation at this time PHOTOS Cells - 10:22 PM I did not take very many photos during this investigation as my cameras all seemed to stop working while I was in the jail area. However, I did get this photo. I do not believe there is anything paranormal in it, it's just a reference photo of some of the cells.
