Felt almost an electrical/magnet pull toward one of the upstairs classrooms- and when we advanced into that room, there were hundreds of dead flies laying on the floor in there. But ONLY in that room. The only other significant experience I had was in the gym, I felt a horrible aversion to one of the "under the stage storage doors". In the basement/boiler room, I felt a strong pull into the back/corner room where I got a few orbs in digital pictures, but the room was too dusty/clutered to value the pictures as anything paranormal. ​ Kelli Patrick:This was a great building to investigate. I used the Sony nighshot camera, regular 35mm camera, EMF and laser thermometer. The nighshot camera was set up in the second floor hallway, right outside the Principal's office and faced the corridor area. The only thing I have on video is the sound of shuffling feet on the concrete floor. The sounds comes from the side or behind the camera. Nothing was found on 35mm camera, EMF or laser camera. It was noticed in one room that there were a lot of dead flies. This is the only room that had them. We spent the night there in the staff lounge. We went to bed at 4am and I kept being awakened by the lounge door oepning and closing approx. every hour. ​ Becky Ray:This was an interesting investigation! Definitely one I can't wait to do a follow-up on. As we did the initial walk through, there were certain places that I had the unmistakable feeling of being watched. This feeling continued as we began setting up our equipment. In fact, every time I was in the gym I felt someone sitting in the middle of the bleachers just watching us. I felt the presence even with the lights on, although nothing was visible. It was very uncomfortable for me to be in there. After an hour or so I returned to the gym to reposition my video camera from the facing the middle of the gym to facing the storage areas under what was once a stage. After doing so, I walked away from the video camera and turned around to scan the gym before leaving. As I looked to the left of my camera at the dead center of the gym, Kelli took a flash photo, and in the light of the flash I saw what appeared to be a man! He was either wearing jeans and a blue windbreaker, or an old 1970s era navy blue jogging suit with white tubing stripes. But he was in the flash and gone. Later in the night on the second floor, a group of us were exploring to see what we could find. We returned to a room we had discovered was covered with dead flies during our walk through and moved through the floor from there. Back in the hallway I saw what appeared to be a shadowperson at the end of the hallway turn and move down the corridor to the end room. This corridor has no windows and gives me a bad feeling before we get near it. As we walk down the corridor into the end room, there is definitely a presence in the room with us. Paul (one of our Iowa team members) remarks that he can see a young child in the corner of the room when cameras flash. Paul continues to be drawn to this room for the remainder of the night. I can't get far enough away from it quick enough. As we are walking back down the hallway to return to base, I hear children laughing, but it is a controlled laugh, classroom sounds! I look to my left and I am right next to a door. But just as quickly the sounds stop. When we finally did lie down for the night, I heard strange sounds almost all night long, like someone moving about in the building. I even had odd dreams about the school that night, and that rarely happens to me. I would also like to thank everyone that was involved with investigating this famous (or infamous!) home. This was the first time I had ever been to the Sallie House. I had heard of it previously, but had never had to opportunity to investigate it. The evening started off with activity. When all of the group had assembled in the living room and parlor area, there was a strange noise that sounded like it came from upstairs. Some people said it sounded like someone clearing their throat, while what I and others heard sounded more like a light chain being pulled. We could not find an explanation for this, and the noise did show up on the audio recording. Throughout the evening, cold spots were felt, particularly in the kitchen and master bedrooms. In the kitchen, several of us smelled a rotting garbage smell, but there was no identifiable source for that odor. Also, a strong floral smell was noticed in the master bedroom, but again, there was no clear explanation for it. Many of us heard very low level whispering throughout the evening, as well as taps and thuds that we couldn’t explain. We also had an EMF spike at the top of the basement stairs that could not be attributed to any wiring or appliances. Several EVP were captured. Overall, this was a very interesting evening, and I hope that we are able to visit again to conduct a more investigation. ​ Kelli Patrick:Equipment used: Night vision videocamera and temperature meter. I didn't feel or see anything during the investigation, except for a quick cold breeze felt against my cheek in the master bedroom. I was sitting next to a person on the bed along with a person standing next to me on my right. There were several others in the room as well. A couple of other people mentioned that a breeze went by them at the same time. A couple of people had been moving around, so I am not excited about the breeze I felt. A couple of times I smelled a citrus smell in the door way of the master bedroom, but always followed people in that room. The smell lasted a second each time, but can't prove it wasn't someone's perfume. The temp. gauge always read normal (60's-70's),but know my readings were reading surfaces of walls, etc. No significant temp. changes. video: video was taken in the "nursery" and was focused on a circle of stuffed animals. They didn't move. Nothing else was picked up on video (sound, video). I had thought I turned on the night vision at the beginning of recording, but I didn't get it totally set and no night vision done. There is a faint recording of a white stuffed animal in the left part of the screen, but it didn't move the entire night. No unusual sounds or anything else could be seen. With a breeze and the smell of citrus in the master bedroom, I didn't experience anything else. Becky Ray:This investigation was for the Atchison Chamber of Commerce and was PAI leading a small group on a brief investigation of the location. Personally, I found the house much more active than on our previous visit five years earlier. We experienced many things we could not explain including hearing footsteps walking up the stairs when we were all downstairs, different smells were noted, and several people experienced cold spots. At one point while we were in the master bedroom, I saw a shadow person walking in a circle in what used to be the nursery. There were a few times we all heard loud thuds we could not explain. ​ Question: When did the phenomena start? Answer: First reports were in the early 1990s, however it is possible activity was happening earlier and not discussed. Question: Any cold spots? Answer: Cold spots have been reported various places in the home, specifically in the kitchen area. Question: Any physical attacks? Answer: The family that lived in the home in the early 1990s reported numerous attacks of scratches appearing on the husband. Question: How far back can you trace the history of the property? Answer: Previous owner named "Robert" died while he was the homeowner. A murder happened on the street, but this does not seem connected to the activity. Question: Give a brief explanation of what you have experienced: Answer: Besides what has already been covered, at times a presence is felt in a room, or the feeling that someone is watching. Lights will flicker in the basement, pets bark and growl at the air. Infant child will wake up suddenly screaming. ​ Investigators Notes ​ Angela Hodge:First off want to thank the family for allowing us into there home and having free roam of the house to investigate. We arrived about 200pm, after the initial talk with the female owner we did a walk thru to see all the rooms and hear about anymore details about what has been happening. The main rooms that we were told that were active is the kitchen to the family room and the kids bedroom room. So Hugh set up a video camera facing the kitchen from the hallway and then at one time in the master bedroom facing the bathroom. Digital recorders were placed about the house to see if any EVP's could be found. As we walked thru the tour of the house I did not feel anything bad or get that feeling of something was there with us. The whole house felt pleasant and had a lived in home feeling which was nice. The owner told us that the past owner was a bus driver and had a love for children so she thought maybe it was him who is visiting the house and plays with her children at time. The name "Bobby" is mentioned as the children have called him that. The past owner name was Robert or Bob so they think maybe there is a connection there. After the owner left we went to the basement all together as when you walk upstairs you here the footsteps very clearly when you’re down there. So to not mislead any of us we all went down stairs to investigate. The past owners left some items in the basement and the present owners have not removed some of the items yet, so we checked the area and did not get anything out of that area. We decided to look into the light flickering that was mentioned in the basement and decided that nothing of paranormal came from it. The light fixture or wires leading to it possibly just needs to be completely replaced to stop the flickering as it's a florescent light fixture. We continued up stairs at this time we decided to break up into groups and went into separate rooms. Myself and Jen went into the children’s room prior to completely setting up Becky put scrabble letters on a children’s table with a toy outlined out nothing came of it, nothing was spelled out or the toy did not move. While in the room with Jen we decided to play with some of the toys to maybe draw out what was there while asking questions and nothing came of it but a few good laughs with the toys. We did have a digital recorder recording so after she goes over her stuff we'll see if she posts anything interesting of it. After about 30 minutes in the children room we switched rooms and the other group went into the children’s while we went into the living room and sat down and tried to recreate some of the motions that they have gone thru with the shadows in the kitchen. We decided we could not recreate what they have seen and went back to talking amongst ourselves. A digital recorder was in the room if anything comes of that it will be posted. When we decided that we were not getting anything in the living room we walked back to the children’s room where the rest of the group was and as we were talking I heard what sounded like a child's voice at the opposite end of the house. I asked if anyone else heard anything and no, again with in a minute or two I heard it again and at that time Jen heard something also. We walked out to the kitchen area we looked to see if the owner had returned and no they had not. After that I did not hear anything. We decided as a group to try and recreate a shadow figure where they mentioned they have seen it in the kitchen/ family room area. We could not recreate a shadow in that area. We also sat down on the children’s bed and to see if one could feel another person sit down on the edge of it and you could. The bed was not soft enough to make an impression on the sheets from when we sat there. The entire house felt pleasant, nothing bad. I took about 31 pictures and only a few dust orbs showed up nothing of a paranormal look came up thru my pictures. I will post what I have. We ended about 430p Thanks again ​ Sevren Jacobs:A big thank you to the home owner that welcomed us into their house to investigate! I used my Olympus 35mm camera and Olympus digital audio recorder with lapel microphone as my equipment on this investigation. During my stay I did not experience any paranormal activity and after reviewing my audio and photographs, did not encounter any evidence of that nature either. It was a very pleasant visit however. Hugh McLenaghan:There didn't seem to be anything strange going on, and I didn't have any feelings there at all. ​ Becky Ray:On our initial walkthrough of the home, I took base EMF readings, and except the areas around the refrigerator and various power chargers the entire home was at an acceptable level. There were no EMF fluctuations during our investigation. For the most part, this was a quiet investigation except for a couple of incidents. The first one happened to me early in the investigation, I had gone into the bathroom in the hallway while the rest of the group was in the back bedrooms setting up video and audio recorders. As I reached for the door to come out, I heard what sounded to me like a male voice right outside of the doorway talking in a loud whisper. I wasn't sure what was said, and assumed it was Hugh, so I opened the door to ask him what he had said, but no one was there. It was then that I discovered the rest of the group had moved on to the front of the house and was nowhere near me. About an hour and half after this Sevren, Hugh, and I were sitting in the children's room. Angela and Jennifer came in and were standing in the doorway as we talked about what we were going to do next. Both Angela and Jennifer reported hearing a noise in the main part of the home, both said it could have been a child's voice. What is interesting to me about both of these occurances is that the family never reported hearing anything out of the ordinary. We have several audio recorders to review, so maybe we'll find an explanation for these two incidents. Overall, the feeling in the home was one of calm. ​ Jennifer Sprague:We got to this place of residence around late noon. I went to the main areas of the house where the owner claimed she saw some paranormal activity. I started in one of the bedrooms and did some evp work in there. I let my audio recorder run for the entire duration of the investigation in that room. I am currently reviewing the recording and will share what I find with the group and post anything noteworthy in the 'evp' section should I come across anything. I also ran an emf sweep through the house and didnt notice any unexplained spikes in the meter. It remained at a low level throughout the investigation. Upon reviewing the video recording, I did notice some strange shadows that seemed to pass by the top part of the microwave in the kitchen ( which is another area that the owners claimed to have seen activity). There are many factors that can play into my observation of this and give it an explanation, there was a window in the room as well so it could have been the sun setting, clouds moving, people in the other room, something outside. Many different factors that could have caused it to happen. So it is hard to say for definite that it was something paranormal. An interesting note, at one point Angela and I did seem to hear what we thought was a child's voice coming from the main area of the house. I will continue to go through my recordings and post anything noteworthy that I come across. I found that interesting (because I am a professional organist/pianist) but got nothing unusual in photos of the area. On the top floor (finished attic space) I had an aversion to one redone bedroom area (would have been a maid's/butler's quarters) and was unable to pass through the doorway because of the intensity of the sensation. Utilized dousing rods for the first time in an investigation at this location- but while the rods were active, got nothing substantial while using them. Kelli Patrick:I used my EMF detector, laser thermometer, Sony nighshot camera, motion detector, and regular 35 mm camera. During the walk through of this building, I felt like someone was walking right next to me in the kitchen hall and the "wake" room (a room used for wakes in the early 1900's). It is now used for storage. I felt fine for the rest of the evening, until it was time to pack up. I felt someone was in the upstairs room with me, trying to hurry me up. Hugh and I were in the upstairs room investigating when I heard a creak and then someone walk by in the hall. We didn't see anything. I then set up my motion detector facing the hallway. It did not go off the rest of the evening. I caught some orbs in the attic, but I believe them to be dust orbs. We are still examining this. On my video from the upstairs room, we had left the room and the camera was facing the hallway. Two times I hear a sound like someone is tapping the microphone on the camera and a possible creak. I am waiting to get back my 35mm film soon. My EMF detector never moved out of the "safe" position. My laser thermometer registered between 55-60 the entire time in the upstairs room (it was very cold because they had the heat down at night). Addendum: Viewing my video film and 35mm film doesn't show anything, except for a couple of orbs that I believe to be dust. We had been walking around in the attic. Becky Ray:The only area I felt any activity in was the former library. During the walk through and every other time I was in this room I had the distinct impression of the same event happening over and over again. I am not a sensitive, and I could not see it, it was just a feeling like someone was there repeating the motion of walking from one part of the room to another over and over again. I am still analyzing my findings. Miranda Stark:Upon entering the building and during the initial walk-through, I did not notice any of the typically heavy, or "haunting", sensations about the atmosphere. For the most part I was comfortable, and at ease. My EMF readings remained consistent, as did the temperature, with the exception of drafty windows. When I went up to the 3rd floor (attic) accompanied by another investigator, we chose a particular room to "experiment" with spirit communication, by laying out letters on the hard-wood floor. The first line spelled out "what is your name", then below that was an arrangement of letters in alphabetical order. We set the infrared video camera in view of the letters, and left them for some time. Upon our return we did NOT notice any significant movement, or misplacement, of the letters. Some of the other investigators, including myself, did capture some photos with "orbs" in them, which are open to speculation. Otherwise, for me, the night went smoothly, and peacefully. The result of this act was violent guerilla fighting which terrorized local populations on both sides of the Missouri and Kansas lines as abolitionists poured into the Kansas Territory. In Jackson County, the Battles of Independence and Lone Jack in 1862 ended in Confederate victories. The state of Missouri was held in the union by military force even though the elected Governor and legislators had voted to secede from the Union. In Jackson County old grudges erupted between families and neighbor turned against neighbor. Women and children were arrested and placed in the 1859 Jail now under the command of the Union Provost Marshals nicknamed the “Little Gods” for the power they had over the population. When the Jail overflowed with the residents of Jackson County, other buildings were used as jails. One of those buildings collapsed and several young girls were killed. Historians believe that this action resulted in the raid on Lawrence, Kansas in 1863. The raid resulted in the infamous Order No. 11 being issued which depopulated Jackson County as well as other counties along the Kansas-Missouri border. The enforcement of this order resulted in terrible hardships for the residents, many women and children had to walk to Texas or Kentucky. Many were killed in the act of obeying the order, Union and Southern families alike. Many families never returned to Jackson County after the war. Independence artist George Caleb Bingham captured their misery on canvas (and another copy was painted on a tablecloth). He later produced an engraving of the painting and sold signed, numbered copies of “Martial Law.” One of his signed proofs is on display at the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum. Reproductions are available for sale. Decades after the war ended in Missouri, the citizens of Jackson county felt the lingering bitterness and uncertainty of that great conflict. Out of these tumultuous times rode Missouri’s most notorious outlaws. Outlaws like the James boys and Youngers used the remaining animosities from the outrages of the war to stay a step ahead of the law for nearly twenty years. In the spring of 1882, Jesse James was murdered. His older brother, Frank, began negotiations with the Missouri governor to surrender because he feared assassination. Frank James spent almost six months in the Jackson County limestone jail. In 1901, a brick jail was added to the back of the limestone jail to house chain gangs. Chain gangs were used to build roads, sewers and other tasks assigned them. They left six days a week at sunrise and returned at sunset. One inmate spent a year on the chain gang for stealing a cow. You can see the Marshal’s home from Main Street, but the two-story limestone jail and the 1901 chain gang jail joins the rear of the home. Guided tours are available upon request in advance." Visitors have reported feelings of nausea and extreme cold. Guards sometimes hear phantom footsteps, growling noises and the sound of a man gasping for air. In addition, a spectral man in a blue uniform has also been seen in the center south cell. It has been thought that the man in the blue uniform may be Henry Bugler who was the Jackson County sheriff. He was killed at the jail in 1866 and was the first law officer in Jackson County to be murdered. ​ Investigators Notes ​ Kevin Glasow:This was my first time at the Jail. Throughout the night I had several odd experiences and was present when others had theirs. During our EVP session in Cell 2 I heard some of the noises and whispering that seemed to be happening in the hall. We had multiple other experiences simular to that as we continued attempting EVPs in other cells, but none I experienced personally. I took a break to get a drink in the expanded area of the jail, and while I was there I saw a figure in one of the glass display shelves. I cannot be certain, however, that I was not seeing a member of the investigation as the reflections in the room are odd, it's also possible I was seeing a reflection from one of the displays and it's movement was a trick of the light. While in Cell 1 I recorded strange temperature readings that seems contrary to what we were feeling. When we first entered the cell seems cool and comfortable compared to the rest of the jail, although I read the temperature at ~82 degrees. As we spent more time in there it seemed to warm up [which makes since considering our body heat would effect it] however the temperature had actually dropped to ~79 degrees. My last, and most striking experience was in Cell 4. Hugh, Severen, Becky and I were sitting in there while Brian and co. were in Cell 2 trying the Oujia board. At one point I felt something touch my leg, and then tug on my jeans. Before I could say anything Becky commented that she thinks something evered the cell. The contact ended when I though I heard something move in Cell 1. I am still reviewing my pictures and audio. Angela Hodge:First off want to thank the 1859 Jail for allowing us to come back again. It's always a pleasant experience working with them. -------------- The jail seemed pretty quiet at first until we set up in the cell #2 as a group, this is the cell that is to your right as you walk into the 1st floor jail area. - As I sat there and we did some EVP questions I could see the next cell diagnally from me. While the group was doing some questions for the EVP I kept feeling like my neck was getting tighter, a few times i would rub my neck. At first I was thinking I was having an allergic reaction to something in the room and started wanting a glass of water but it would come and go. It did not dawn on me untill at the view i had a few times I kept questioning myself if I was seeing what I was seeing. I eventually inturrupted the group's question and let them know that I was seeing a rope hanging from the ceiling and what looked like a dark figure being hung. I could not see a face or make it out, but I could see a thick rope that was braided and had a loop at the end. I knew that there was a light fixture in that direction hanging but it did not look like that at all. I'll post any picture if anything did appear. -------------------- At one point Bryan, Junior and myself went into Cell 1 and felt the room atmosphere change to a very unpleasant feeling, but nothing that could be documented. We also went into Cell 2 and I felt little pricks on my upper right arm, Junior at that time had a thermal camera and could see red streaks on my arm. After I mentioned it to Junior it stopped. I also felt a huge rush of hot air come over me but the room temperature never changed. -------------------- When we went upstairs and was in the uppper cell area all looking around I turned and was heading out toward the hallway I saw what looked like a little dark shadow dart across the hallway to the back bedroom. I had Jennifer check it out but nothing. ---------------------- Other then that not much happened I have some EVP to go over and pictures if anything appears I will post. Since this was my 2nd visit and in the first visit I would say something is definitly there just don't know what. We could hear whispering throughtout times but nothing that could be made out. Several times we would go and check if Maryanne had a radio on or was talking to someone but nothing. All in all it was a good time and would like to go back during the day sometime as a visitor. Sevren Jacobs:This was a wonderful place to visit and investigate! For equipment I used my Olympus 35mm camera and Olympus Digital Audio Recorder. I recall hearing a couple of occurrences of faint whispering during our first group EVP session for the night which took place inside Cell #2. It almost sounded as if a radio or televison was on with the volume on very low at one point. I am in the process of reviewing my audio and developing my photos. If any unexplainable anomalies in my footage are discovered, I will be sure to post it! Bryan Kaplan:It was a great investigation. As of right now I've gone through 30 minutes of one of my recorders and have found some interesting EVP's. The main thing I experienced at this location was the occasional whispering that I and others heard while we sat/stood in a couple of the jail cells. Hugh McLenaghan:During the period of the investigation there were a few voices that were heard. Apart from that, nothing really happened. Becky Ray:Many thanks go out to the Jackson County Historical Society and the folks at the 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum for allowing us to come back for a follow up investigation! On this night I only used a standard 35mm camera, as on our previous visit we learned that EMF readings were faulty in this area. After setting up our equipment which included infrared cameras, thermometers, and a thermal camera, we began the investigation by attempting to obtain EVPs in each of the cells. We started in Cell 2, and more than once while questions were being asked, I heard the distinct sound of whispering coming from the hallway. All of our members were together in this cell, so there was no one out there. Off and on during the night I would hear this, as did other members. One thing I wanted to accomplish on this visit was to try to find a cause for the anomaly that appeared on video during our first visit. After I had checked the wall for any type of object that may have caused a reflection, we went into Cell 4 to try to recreate the exact conditions from the first visit. I watched the camera monitor closely as we did this, but at no time did anything appear out of the ordinary. I used the exact same 35mm camera as I had on the previous investigation, stood in the exact same spot, but nothing out of the ordinary appeared. As of now, the anomaly is still unexplained. I will be posting some investigation photos and any photos that contain anomalies within the next few days. Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I used my audio recorder and was also the note taker for the group. We started off with an evp session in cell block 3. During this session, I heard what I thought was whispering coming from behind me. Others in the group experienced this too, many people in the group had personal experiences throughout this investigation and also during this evp session. It is important to note that at this particular time all of us were in this cell and there were no others present. During the second evp session in cell block 1, I didnt experience anything first hand, but later on when I was walking by the cell I heard whispering again. It sounded like two people having a conversation, at this time it is important to note that nobody was in that paticular cell or any other cell, the reast of the group were all down at the room at the end of the hallway. After our second evp session we moved on to other cell blocks and at one point I thought I saw a shadow hovering in between cell blocks 1, 2 and 3. Whether this was just lighting or trick of the eye I am not sure. Again- Nobody was in the hallway near that area. All of us were in the room down the hall. Upon reviewing my audio footage I believe I have come across many interesting evps. Among them are whispering, breathing and what appears to be a man's voice talking on several different occasions. I look forward to trying to download all of these so that they can be listened to. I look forward to a future trip to this Jail! Miranda Stark:I would like to generously thank the Jackson County Historical Society for welcoming PAI, as we have now had our second visit and investigation within their lovely establishment at the Marshall's 1859 Jail in the historical Independence Square. This place never fails to astound me. The stone walls seem to contain treasures of tales from the jail's rich history. One can almost feel the presence of tense emotion in the air, just upon entering first floor corridor between the six cells located there. As we gathered together in one cell for an EVP session, many of our investigators reported feelings of a "presence", hearing sounds of whispers behind them, and seeing an occassional shadowy form darting past outside the cell. We were blessed with an opportunity to have use of a very impressive piece of equipment on this evening, as one of our members was able to bring a thermal imaging camera to the investigation. We were all impressed at it's abilities to detect temperature changes with a visual display. We recorded these images during most of the investigation, and those tapes are in review at this time. The investigation went smoothly. We had a great arrangement with everyone's equipment. We are excited to see what our evidence review has to reveal. My photographs turned up nothing significant, just a few dust or cob-web orbs. Junior Szudarski:I would first like to thank the staff at the Marshal's Home and Museum for making my first investigation with the team a very memorable one. I would also like to thank a very trusting friend for the use of my favorite piece of equipment, the digital thermal imaging camera. I also used two digital voice recorders( Olympus VN-960PC DVR and Sony ICD-P210 IC R) and my digital camcorder(Samsung Mini DV SCD23 Digital Camcorder). While using the thermal, I had a few moments where there were some brief and unexplainable temp changesin cell number one. Had another instance where I was viewing out of cell number 2 and seen a cloud of temperature change that lasted only a few seconds. Within the first several minutes in the Lemp I had my first experience when the bags I had left in the Elsa Lemp room moved on their own. I had been out of the room and out of site from the bags for a matter of seconds, and when I reopened the door the bags had been moved across the bed and my hoodie was hanging half off the bed. I entered the room and asked if Elsa was showing off for me, at which point the hoodie fell off the bed. The rest of the the evening was filled with several more experiences, mostly audio. The vast majority of these happened when we were in the parlor using the Oujia board. Multiple times we all heard something walking, tapping/scratching the glass, or moving in the room. Throught I seemed to feel a heat source pressing on the back of my neck. As well as everyone else I joined in the hunt for Becky's missing lens cap and can confirm it was not in the room when we looked for it. I even looked right before we all went outside the last time at the point where it would later reappear. I, however, was not there when it was found again. My evening sleeping in the Elsa Lemp room was uneventful beyond an odd dream what had Charles Lemp in it. I think that came from an overactive imagination and not anything paranormal, however. I am still reviewing the pictures I took and the audio recordings. ​ Angela Hodge:The Lemp Mansion is a must see in St.Louis. I was in Aww of the Lavender room bathroom. As it was mostly all marble and tiled with a fireplace in there. It is built for a woman in mind.....so beatiful. As soon as we arrived and was taken up to the 2nd floor where we all had rooms, I felt imediatly something in William Lemp room. My eye's just hurt almost like I was having an allergy attack, the room was very fuzzy for me for while. After an hour or two passed this feeling did eventually go away for myself. Later in the night we decided to do some investigating in the Atrium room and as we all sat down in a circle asking for any of the Lemp family members to make them selve present or ask for any sign of there existance. I began to feel someone tug on the back of hair. No one in our group was behind me only beside me. Later in the even I also felt someone scratching my lower thigh and upper calve as I sat in a chair. It was painful just annoying as I kept touching my leg after it. Later in the night around 3am I decide to call it a night for myself and head to bed. While Jennifer who was my room mate for the night headed down stairs with everyone else to go outside for fresh air. Only Beth & Hugh and myself were the only ones up stairs in our beds. As i laid there in bed watching tv drifting to sleep I felt something crawl into the bed with me. As it creeped up the bottom of the bed on to my legs. It felt like an animal crawling in bed with me. No animals were present on the investigation. I just laid there still watching tv letting it happen, I felt a breathe hit my face that smelled like doggie breath. I then wrestled my feet and legs around to lift it off of me at that time I then heard a dog wimper and fade away..... Thru-out the night each of us at different time heard thud sounds or a thump on the floors. To me it sounded like a body fell to the floor or something heavy get knocked off. When we investigated the thud nothing was moved. I will post what pictures I have well some as i took over 200 pictures. I also did some EVP work and will go over that post if anything comes about. I would stay there again and would like to eat there also as it is a resturant and dinner theatre. What makes it even more awesome as my room faced the Brewery for Budwieser plant in St. Louis awesome I must say....next time tour of that place..... Beth McLenaghan:I love the Lemp. I wait each year to go there, because it's such a beautiful and emotive place. I used a digital camera. There were only a couple of odd things that happened to me there this year (unlike other years) while walking down the hall coming from the third floor down to the second, with Kevin behind me, I saw a dark shadow clearly pass across a door frame into the crack of the closed bathroom door connected to the Lavender room. We made several attempts to recreate it, but were unable to. About 2 hours later, I started feeling kind of light headed, and so I laid down on our bed in the William Lemp room, (with a camera aimed on me to document any sounds or events that might happen while i was alone, and while there I clearly heard two young girls playing and laughing. Later that night, (while with someone else) I also heard two men fighting, and at times what sounded like light, almost Ragtime-ish piano player. I was hoping they'd play "Name that tune" with me, but wasn't so lucky. The night was quiet, and I will begin going through my photos in the next day or two. We had a great time there, and I look forward to returning there next rear!! Hugh McLenaghan:Again this was a fun time, wish it didn't go so quick. Unfortunately nothing happened to me during the visit, but things did happen to others. Becky Ray:The Lemp is always a great place for an investigation, but we definitely had more experiences on this night than others. The most intriging to me was the apparent deport and apport of my lens cap from my camera. I had removed the lens cap to use my camera, and not having any pockets on I sat it down on the table in the Lavender room. When I went to retrive the cap, it was not where I thought I had left it. Knowing I could have been mistaken about it's location, I began looking all over the room. Everyone on the investigation turned the room upside-down looking for this lens cap, including digging through the trash and taking all the cushions off the couch and looking under everything, but to no avail. I decided to go on about the night and search for it later, but still canvased the room every time we took a break. At one point during the night, I spoke loudly to the house asking whoever had taken my lens cap to place it on the bed. Shortly after 3am we decided to call it a night, and I checked the room again real quick before everyone except Hugh, Beth, and Angela went outside for bit. When I returned to the room after this, my lens cap was sitting plain as day on the bedside table. Several of us, if not everyone, had looked at this, as it stood out - being black on a white and lavender knitted cover. Several other strange things happened during this investigation, that other members have mentioned. I'm getting my film developed and will be going over my video soon. ​ Sarah Schroeder:Equipment used: Digital camera and Hugh and Beth's Cell Sensor. Wow did I have a blast at the Lemp!! We had so many experiences that it will be hard to keep this short and sweet! :) When we arrived at the lemp, we were instantly given a tour of the attic that had now been transformed into having two more bedrooms which were absolutely beautiful! While I was standing outside of the famous "Monkey Boy Room", I felt my hair getting tugged on my right side a few times. At first I thought it might be my jacket, but it continued. After room assignments we started to unpack. Becky lost her lens cap which was later recovered...ill let her tell that story. Its too amazing! After I was done unpacking, I checked my cell phone and went outside for some air. After I came back in, my cell phone was all wonky and not working properly. It completely locked me out which takes several key strokes to get to, and wouldnt accept my password. As I was trying to figure out what happened to my cell, Kevin came downstairs and he too had just recently had an experience. It seemed the Lemp was already revving up for a fun night! We started our night by trekking up to Kevin's room (Elsa Lemp Suite). Somehow, the bathroom door to the lavendar room was left ajar and none of the PAI team members had even opened the door. Its a heavy door which requires effort to close which I did after we came back down. We then went to the Atrium and the team did some work with the ouija board. During the sessions, I was extremely nauseous. However, inbetween sessions, I was completely fine. I checked my pulse to make sure it wasnt anxiety and my pulse was fine. During the sessions, we heard footsteps behind us, taps on the glass panes on the room dividers, and a really loud BANG! above us. I also had my thighs touched and pinched during the sessions as well. Angela said that something was tugging her hair, and using EMF, it spiked a point higher behind her head. I tried the EMF in other locations but it remained normal yet quickly jumped a point directly behind her head. Other PAI members experienced other "touching" sensations as well. After the ouiji board, we started to head back upstairs to gather for another trek around the Mansion. At this time, Becky and I were standing outside of the Charles Lemp suite where I heard a little girls voice down the hallway. I asked Becky if she heard it, and she did as well atleast two times. Becky checked it out, but could not find a possible origin. We then descended into the basement. Nothing too interesting down here except I had a strong overwhelming sensation of someone standing directly behind me as if they were leaning over looking at what we were doing. We then went to the front dining room where Billy Lemp was said to have committed suicide. We all heard a loud "POP!" sound to the left of the dining area. After Billy Lemp's suicide room, we again ran upstairs real quick to reassemble. At this time, there was an overwhelming scent of vanilla that was at the top of the stairs and near the front of the Lavender room that was detected by myself, Becky, Hugh and Kevin with no known origin. After another fresh air break we returned back up to our rooms. This is when the lens cap reappeared (see Becky's posting). Becky and I retired to bed and yet still more odd occurrances continued. Becky let out a loud yelp when her foot mysteriously went into spasm. Intermittently, my toes felt like they were being touched and massaged. I had just thought it was the sheets rubbing my feet from Becky moving in bed until upon query, she hadnt moved her feet in several minutes. I had the sensation of fingers massaging my toes which continued even when I shifted positions in bed and with no movement from becky on the opposite side of the bed. It was not a muscle spasm - but a soft and gentle rubbing motion. As we were finishing our conversation, we both heard a loud "POP!" followed by a flash of light in our room. Becky investigated but could find no cause for this. Additionally, we had one other light streak within the room that was unexplainable. The Lemp Mansion was an incredible place! I can't wait to go back and get more evidence and have more experiences! Jennifer Sprague:This was my first time going to the Lemp Mansion and I loved it! On this investigation I used a disposable 35 mm camera and a digital camera. I also placed a picture of my dog on the bed to see if for some reason it would be moved, it did not but I did have some other experiences. Angela and I stayed in Charles Lemp's room throughout the night, and both of us had some strange experiences during the night. Charles Lemp was a known recluse and before he commited suicide he shot his dogs, it is interesting to note that during the night Angela and I both continued to hear what we thought were dog whimpers around the room. And at one point Angela said that she smelled what appeared to be dog breath around her face and she also claimed to experience the feeling of something climbing on the bed. Upon hearing the dog whimpers, I looked around the room to see if it could be coming from somewhere else.. all the windows in the room were shut and the t.v was not on. Our door was also shut during this time. This happened around 4:00 am in the morning. I could not find anything at that moment that could explain where those sounds were coming from. Through out the night I did continue to feel uneasy and break out into sweats. The temperature in the room seemed to change a lot. Unfortunately, at the time I did not have a temperature gage with me to check to see if it indeed was the temperature changing in the room that was affecting me, or if it was something physical with my own body affecting me. Another experience I had was in the room Beth and Hugh were staying in. Upon entering it I felt very dizzy and disoriented and my eyes seemed to be going out of focus at times. At first I thought maybe it was something parnanormal affecting me..but I realized that more than likely it was the lights in the room..the lights seemed to have a weird dimming affect which seemed to throw a lot of my vision off which in turn made me feel dizzy. Earlier in the night Becky could not find her lens cap to her camera. I and many other members of the group searched the Lavendar room to see if we could find it. Later on, after we all had come back in from outside, Becky and Sarah came to Angela and I and said that there was something that we needed to see in the Lavendar room and when I went in to the room they showed me the lens cap sitting on the table. I know for a fact that we searched that entire room, including the night stand itself and all areas around it..numerous times.. we searched everything.. even the trash. I find the fact that the lens cap was placed on the nightstand after we had searched it so many times to be interesting. It was one of the most strangest things that occured that night. Nothing has showed up in any of my pictures so far. Some also reported being touched. Two reported a random cold blast of air from behind them in the Bunker, where there were also many spikes on several K2 meters, clear to red. Other lighted paranormal investigation devices also went off there, where a Shadow Man and children are reported to reside. One EVP has been discovered so far, other audio is still being reviewed. A series of photos were also taken with unexplained aspects to them. ​ Location History The oddly named Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) was formed in the United States in 1819 and grew from the original order that came up in England in the 18th century. It aimed to provide shelter and care to those in need, such as the elderly, widows, and orphans. The fraternal order came first came to Missouri in 1835, and by the end of the century, they built the Odd Fellows Home, a 240-acre complex. It was a form of health and life insurance, and as long as members had a good record, they could depend on the Odd Fellows for help. The complex had its own farm and expected those who could work. It also had its own hospital, an orphanage, a school, a nursing home, and a cemetery. The society, like other fraternal organizations, conducted secret rituals, and one of the most important ones was the initiation. A key symbol in this ceremony was a skeleton, which served as a reminder of mortality. Today, a small room in the complex houses some interesting artifacts that the IOOF left behind, including “George”, the skeleton of an Odd Fellows member who died in the 1880s and donated his body to science. When the body was no longer needed for teaching, the bleached and articulated bones were returned to the IOOF, as per his agreement, for use in their initiation rituals. (All of the skeletons used by various IOOF halls are named George, so that is not the original member’s name.) The display also includes other curious objects left behind such as masks, books, and swords. Now consisting of four buildings and a few small outbuildings, the Odd Fellows Home sits on 36 remaining acres and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986. Three of the red-brick buildings exhibit the Jacobean-Revival style and well-known architect, William Ittner, who designed one of these structures, the Administration Building. The buildings are in a state of deterioration, with broken windows, doors, and damaged roofs. However one of the most impressive buildings, the Belvoir Winery and Inn, has renovated the first floor, and it is now a tasting room and event space for the winery. This clip beings with Beth saying, "She might be calling me real loud," then, after a bit of a pause, you will hear two different voices. I've listened to nearly half of the audio as of 10/13/08 and have found a few interesting EVP's. I'll post my audio results soon. I think we should conduct a follow-up in feb. or march. ​ Becky Ray:On this investigation I used an EMF meter and my digital camera. At several point during the investigation I felt as if someone was quietly watching us from a distance. Most of this activity seemed to come from the main stairway. While we sat vigil in the upstairs, I could see a slight change in the shadows at the top of the stairs as if someone was coming up them, but there was never anyone there. We played around with light fixtures, and cast our own shadows, but were not able to re-create exactly what it was I was seeing. This was a very interesting location, and I am definitely looking forward to returning. ​ Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I was note taker for the group. We started off with a tour of the house and the areas that reportedly had paranormal activity. We did all basic sweeps of those areas and didnt notice any noticeable spikes in any of the meters we were using, however, on a couple of instances a few members seemed to feel that they were being watched in the upstairs room where much of the activity occured. I can remember two occurences of fleeting feelings of uneasiness and anxiety for myself, but I can not say for certain that it was the cause of anything paranormal. We had two main evp sessions and on one occasion those staying in the house heard a loud knock downstairs while we were asking questions upstairs, two other interesting points to note is that at one point several members heard a set of keys dangling and at the time was too near to be anything coming from outside, the other occurence to note is that several members, including myself, saw a shadow moving on the camera and it seemed to becoming from upstairs, again the most reportedly active place in the house, we tried many things and tried various tests to try to see if we could recreate and explain this shadow but all our tests fail short of a clear duplication. We are still in the process of going over footage and video and will post anything of interest as soon as possible! They have both interesting experiences in their home, they have witnessed a shadow person that seems to just observe them. The shadow is not transparent and seems to appear and move in the upper stairwell and along the rear of the house. One of the home owners have heard there name being uttered when no one else was around. And they inadvertently caught a interesting evp on camera. I recorded the entire investigation on a HD camcorder and placed one static HI8 camera in the stairwell. I also used the K2 EM meter, Trifield Natural EM meter, and a Pyromter on this investigation. I have reviewed all video and did not seem to capture anything abnormal. We also did not have any unexplained readings on the EM meters or any unexplained temperature variations. I did feel tightness in my chest in the upstairs loft. But outside of that minor incident I had no other personal experiences on this investigation. I would be interested in doing a follow-up investigation at the house if the activity continues to happen. ​ Trista Walsh:This was my 3rd investigation, and I finally feel I am up to speed on most of the investigation protocol. This particular investigation was in a home. The homeowners are experiencing some paranormal activity in their home. Both people in the home have seen dark non translucent shadows. They also get an uneasy feeling that they are being watch or that someone is there. They feel that someone likes to be upstairs where they have added on. Also they have heard someone utter there name aloud. We reviewed many pictures, two hours of Audio, and a few hours of combined HD and HI8 Video. Nothing abnormal was found. The homeowners reported hearing something move against the blinds behind this curtain when no one was near it.
