  • CALIFORNIA - Hotel Del Coronado | kcghosts

URBAN LEGENDS CALIFORNIA - Hotel Del Coronado by: Kelli Patrick On 33 oceanfront acres sits a Victorian castle called the Hotel Del Coronado, "The Del" was completed in 1888. When it was built, the hotel was the most prominent structure outside of New York City to be electrically lighted and Thomas Edison himself supervised the installation of the incandescent lamp invention. L. Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz, did much of his writing here, and is said to have based his designs for the Emerald City on the hotel. Other famous people to have stayed at the Del include Presidents, Charles Lindbergh, Marilyn Monroe, and it is rumored that King Edward VIII first met Wallis Simpson, the woman he would abdicate the throne to marry, at the Del. The Ghosts There are two rooms at the Del that are reportedly haunted. The rooms are 3502 and 3312, originally 302. The resident ghost is Kate Morgan. She checked into room 302 in November of 1892 and never checked out. Her spirit is said to haunt this room to this day. Room 3502 is also reported to have similar occurrences of phantom noises, flickering lights, off scents, and curtains billowing when no one is there to disturb them and the windows are closed. Inspections can't explain why there is differences of temperature or the constantly malfunctioning wiring. No one knows for sure who is residing in room 3502, but some say the maid who tended to Kate stayed here...and hasn't left. Even thought Kate stayed in room 3312, the room 3502 seems to be the location for most of the ghostly happenings. Guests of room 3312 have reported toilets flushing by themselves, lights turning on and the TV blasting on and not being able to be turned off. Several guests have seen a shadowy figure of a woman standing by the window. Ashtrays have flown across the room and shattered. A local radio station tried to broadcast live from the room and nothing worked. Equipment that was checked and rechecked suddenly failed. Kate Morgan Kate (Farmer) Morgan, registered under the alias Lottie Bernard, checked into room 302, on November 23. On November 29, 1892, she was found dead. Kate checked in and was going to meet with her brother there that weekend, official transcripts report. Kate was married to Tom Morgan. He was off trying to win money a poker, that was his job. Kate became pregnant and wanted to settle down. Supposedly Tom did not want to settle down. According to reports, Kate told staff that she had stomach cancer and her brother, a doctor, would be arriving soon to help. She refused to see a house doctor. Several witnesses said that Kate looked to be in a lot of pain the day she died. She seemed to be despondent and lonely during her time at the hotel. Kate had a pharmacist bring camphor, a painkiller, and a sponge to her room. Malaria pills were found in her room. those drugs along w/ alcohol that was ordered from the bar, would surely induce an abortion. While waiting for Tom, Kate bought a gun and waited by her window. The testimony of the local gunshopowner given at the coroner's inquest stated that he sold Lottie Bernard a .44 American bull-dog and two cartridges and showed her how to load the gun. the bullet found in the head of the deceased was thought to be a .38. Who was Kate Morgan? Newspapers across the country carried stories and sketches of the dead woman. No one ever came to claim the body. Kate Morgan was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in San Diego. There are theories that Tom, brother or husband, depending on the story you read, arrived at the hotel and suggested that Kate take a walk outside around midnight. Kate was angry at Tom for not settling down and forcing her to miscarry her child. Their argument became heated and Kate pulled her gun, shot at Tom and missed. But Tom didn't miss. The bullet found in Kate's head did not match her gun. There would have been more damage done to her face if she had been shot with a .44. There was minimal damage and the bullet was still lodged in her head. the coroner said Kate was shot at an upward angle. Tom could have been standing a few steps below her on the sand. Tom would have been the only one to identify her, but he did not come to claim the body. Murder or suicide? Kate Morgan is still at the Del, waiting for her husband or the truth.

Originally named Philadelphia, the town’s name was changed in 1833 to coincide with the landmark. Its situation on the Missouri River and Santa Fe Trail meant that large numbers of travelers heading west passed through the town. In 1834, Joseph Huston, a native of Virginia, began construction of a two-story brick structure known today as the Old Tavern. By 1860, Arrow Rock had become Saline County’s most important river port, with a population of more than 1,000. Famous residents have included the painter George Caleb Bingham and Dr. John Sappington, who was instrumental in combating malaria. The town has also produced three Missouri governors. The population boom of the past slowly faded and today, Arrow Rock can only boast about 100 residents. Its charm, antique stores and inns still manage to attract thousands of visitors though and remains in a constant state of restoration. One ghostly spot in town is the already mentioned Old Tavern, which was built in the 1830's by slaves owned by John Huston. The tavern still operates today as a wonderful restaurant and is also home to "spirits" of another sort. Over the years staff members have claimed a number of strange experiences. The daughter of a manager refused to stay in the building alone and a teenager who mopped the floors for the place quit. He said that, even though the dining room was empty, he heard the sounds of people talking and eating in the other room. Others have heard their names called and have heard unearthly footsteps pacing the floors. Investigators Notes Becky Ray:This was one of those investigatons where crazy things happened before we even had time to unpack our equipment. Highlights: Kitchen door swinging on it's own without logical cause. We tried all night to recreate this and were unable to get it to perform as it did on its own. Loud crash. I captured this event on video and will be posting it soon. We were not able to find anything that could have possibly made the sound we heard. What is most interesting about this to me is that I had the same thing happen on an earlier visit to the Tavern. This is a location I would like to return to as much as possible. Kevin Simpson:This building was AMAZING. From the moment we walked in the door into the kitchen door was swinging back in forth. We tried many things to recreate it and nothing. There was also a dress hanging on a chair that would wave back and forth when the door would open, like someone was moving it. When we would walk thru the door it would move the dress but only for 2 or 3 seconds. But when we were first there it swung for 10 or 15 seconds. Several times throughout the night myself and others in the group heard voices male and female. At one point I went into the kitchen to refill my drink and as I got into there I heard 2 distinct laughs. One was pretty loud and the other was quieter. No one was around the building that I saw. Probably the best point of the evening was when we were sitting in the dining room talking and there was a loud crash in the kitchen. The entire group went into the kitchen to find nothing out of place. We did numerous experiments to try to recreate it, will be checking my recordings to see if we recreated it. I would like to thank everyone involved for a great investigation and also to our host for the great experience and also the amazing food. I could have not been happier with the evening. I would love to go back to this building and also would be open to any building in this town. Great history and also great memory for me. Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I brought my own notebook for notes and also used a digital audio recorder. From the moment we walked in there seemed to be some strange activity happening with the door that served as the entry way between the kitchen and the dining room. The door apparently seemed to be opening by itself. This was witnessed by much of the staff there as well as members of our group. No matter how hard we tried to figure out what could be the cause for the door to open, we could not find a logical explanation. One literally has to manually push open the door, a breeze, even a strong one, was not enough to create the same effect. The strange thing was was that as the door opened a small breeze as if somebody was walking by was felt by not only me but also by other people there. In fact a dress that was hanging over a chair right by the door also swayed as this was happening. What is even stranger is that during the night the door did open by itself again. Although other members of the group described hearing some disembodied voices, I,myself, did not. We all heard some indescribable noises throughout the place, that we could not explain and that were more than normal 'creaks' associated with settling of foundations. The most noted one came from the kitchen. During this time we were all sitting in the dining room when a loud metallic sounding crash came from the kitchen, it was so loud that we were all startled to hear it. Upon investigating what it could be we saw nothing out of place in the kitchen, and nothing seemed to have fallen. We were able to rule out other factors. In order to create the same sound one would have to literally drop all the pots and pans on the floor, take a huge container full of silverware and slam it on the ground, or lift up the opening of one of the steamers and slam it. Hopefully we will be able to put up that footage soon as we were lucky enough to capture on film. I will be reviewing audio soon and will post any evps ( electronic voice phenomenon) that I come across. I would like to thank the J Huston Tavern for having us out there, and also the wonderful dinner!! I really hope to go back in the very near future! It's definitely an interesting place! It was to this isolated cabin that the Reverend Robert James brought his young wife Zerelda and infant son Frank in 1845. This is where Jesse was born in 1847, and years later, Union soldiers seeking the whereabouts of Frank James beat Jesse and tortured his stepfather Dr. Reuben Samuel by repeatedly hanging him from a tree in the front yard. In 1875, a Pinkerton bomb killed their half-brother Archie and severed Zerelda's right arm. Zerelda began giving tours of the birthplace after her son, Jesse, died. Frank continued the tradition charging 50 cents for tours. His son, Robert, also gave tours, and after he passed, Jesse's grandsons kept the house open to the public until it was sold to Clay County in 1978. In 1978, Clay County purchased the farmhouse and 40-acre site from Jesse's grandsons. By the following summer, tourists were passing through the boyhood home of Frank and Jesse James. Today the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The legend continues today from the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The Jesse James Birthplace has welcomed visitors worldwide who come to "Live the Legend and Learn the History" of the two most famous American outlaws – Frank and Jesse. from https://jessejamesmuseum.org/ Investigator's Notes Becky, Lead Investigator:

Old Cooper County Jail and Hanging Barn Location Information Date: 07 November 2020 Type: Museum Location Title: Old Cooper County Jail and Hanging Barn City/State: Boonville, MO Investigation Times: 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM Status: Analysis Weather Information Sunrise: 06:51 AM Sunset: 05:09PM High Temperature: 73°F Low Temperature: 53°F Sky Condition: Clear Wind: SE at 7 mph Humidity: 60% Precipitation: 0% Lunar Phase: Waning Gibbous % disk visible: 59% Pressure: 29.98 mmHg Investigators Present Jennifer Sprague Becky Ray Tania Rounds Julie Klos Burch Lindsey Kadri Investigators Notes Jennifer Sprague, Lead Investigator: On this investigation, we investigated the Old Cooper County Hanging Jail and Hanging Barn in Boonville Missouri, and we also investigated Thespian Hall in Boonville Missouri. I’d like to thank Tina and James for helping us investigate thespian Hall and making that investigation possible, We would also like to thank Laura from the Boonville Historical Society they were all very much appreciated! We started out at the Old Cooper County Jail and Hanging Barn with a short tour with Laura from the Historical Society of Boonville. We started off in the jail on the top floor and set up a motion camera On Cell #3. This cell is where a prisoner committed suicide. We set up a few motion-activated toys in that cell as well as the other cells on that floor to see if anything would trigger them. We did have one sensor toy that kept going off, but we believe after testing it that it was just oversensitive, so we took that toy out and used the rest of the remaining toys in those cells. We did do EVP sessions individually in each cell. At one point Becky reported feeling uneasy with a certain cell and I did get chills at one point, but upon reviewing my audio and other things equipment-wise, we did not pick up anything that was reported on the equipment during the same time as the reports, we did have a few fluctuations on the EMF but nothing prominent. Upon reviewing our motion-activated camera for Cell #3, we did not find anything that triggered it to go off other than us moving around. We then moved to the other part of the upper floor and did an EVP session in those cells as well, we did capture a few possible EVPs that we will post. We then moved to the bottom floor of the jail and did some EVP sessions down there and took some documentation photos. We did not pick up anything there and then we proceeded to the Hanging Barn. We did have a strange occurrence with our EMF detectors upon entering. They tended to go off in one spot near the door, and we couldn’t find any sort of explanation for this at the time. No major electrical wiring was present to trigger it as well as no telephone wires outside. We also were not around any electrical outlets that would trigger it to go off, and everything we tested was not strong enough to make any sort of initial response on our detectors. This lasted for a few minutes and then quickly dissipated. We did do EVP sessions in the barn on the top floor and on the bottom floor. We did capture any EVPs at that time, but Becky and I did both hear what sounded like walking upstairs at one point, but could not figure out where it was coming from. The same noise was later reported when Becky was alone during the EVP session in the barn later on. We then separated into an EVP session and trigger experiment. I put Tania in the bottom row of cells in the jail and Lindsay on the top floor of the jail, I then put Becky in the Hanging Barn and Julie in a central area of the jail. I could separate people into senders and receivers. The idea was to see if through concentration on pictures if the senders could get something “paranormal” to happen to the receivers, either through an EVP capture of something related to the picture concentrated on or something else. Becky and Lindsey were both receivers and Tania and Julie were we’re both senders. I gave Tania and Julie both specific pictures to look at. Tania was looking at a jail key and lock, and Julie was looking at a picture of a noose related to the Barn. Lindsey and Becky took notes on what they were feeling and experiencing during this time. Upon completion, there were some similarities between what Julie was trying to send to Becky. Julie also had a very emotional reaction and Becky did picture a noose at one point that came to her mind. There were some slight similarities between Tania and Lindsey’s experiences as well. Location History Until its closing in 1978, it was the oldest continuously used County Jail in Missouri. The original structure was completed in 1848 for $6,091.50. Slaves quarried the 2½ foot thick limestone blocks which they used for the construction of the two-story building. Each story had one large room, reminiscent of old dungeons, equipped with 1 ¼ inch round rings bolted into the outer walls. The prisoners were shackled to these rings at their feet. The large room on the ground level, known as the “bullpen” held slaves destined for the auction block on Main Street. In 1871, the appearance of the second-story room was changed with the addition of iron box cells. Brought to Boonville by steamboat from St. Louis, these were installed using the occupants of the jail as laborers. The jail was to receive no additional major changes for another century. The most famous of the many prisoners associated with the Jail was Frank James, brother of Jesse. On April 24th, 1884, James was brought to the Cooper County Jail by Sheriff John Rogers to answer a warrant for his arrest for a train robbery that took place in 1876. Sympathetic citizens of Boonville raised his bond in a matter of hours. The case was later dismissed for lack of evidence. In 1871, the County Court also authorized the construction of an adjoining sheriff’s residence consisting of three rooms. In a matter of months, it was expanded to include a second story as well as a kitchen addition to the back of the main floor. Numerous other improvements were made including a brick privy, a cistern, and a smokehouse but none of these outbuildings survived. The last major construction occurred in 1878 with the building of the “stable/jail barn” designed to house the horses of the sheriff in case a posse was needed. It was in this building that one of the last public hangings in Missouri took place. On January 31st, 1930, Lawrence Mabry, 19, climbed the 13 steps to the loft and was “hung by the neck until dead” for a robbery and killing in Pettis County. This hanging was a contributing factor in the elimination of county capital punishment. In 1971, the Jail Barn became the first restoration project of the newly created Friends of Historic Boonville. Every cell has its own history, its own stories to tell. The graffiti-carved limestone rock walls stand as silent witnesses to a way of life beyond our comprehension. The cells are empty now. But with a little imagination, you can hear the footsteps of the sheriff as he walks across the floor to one of the cell doors. The huge jailer’s keys clang against each other. There is a pause and then the sound of a brass key entering one of the old iron locks. For some, it turns to the right, opening the door and letting them out, giving them a second chance. For others, the key turns to the left, closing the door behind them, sealing their fate. In 1978, a Federal Court declared the Cooper County Jail “cruel and unusual punishment”, therefore closing the cell doors permanently and bringing to the end of an era of Boonville and Cooper County history. The generosity of the Kemper Foundation of Kansas City and the restoration efforts of the Friends of Historic Boonville has ensured that this history will not be forgotten. There was a lot of traffic noise. Recorders reviewed so far did not capture any noticeable EVPs in the cabin. Nothing unusual was noted. We moved to the house. Jennifer got stuck in the downstairs bathroom for a bit. (Our host had just mentioned people got stuck in the bathroom.) An attempt to recreate it showed the door swung readily open and closed several times and later in the evening Becky had no issue getting out. It was noticed that the knob gets stuck when turned all the way in one direction, so that could be a reason for this issue. In Dr. Tremonti's surgery room, the overhead lights flickered after one of my comments. Our recording contains my comment about it and Becky's confirmation. This only happened once during our time in the room. Jennifer captured a possible EVP in this room which is currently under review. The tricycle REMpod did not activate. All of us were in the Main Bedroom when we all heard a "glass clinking" noise outside the room. It was determined none of our equipment had caused this noise and it wasn't heard again. Becky was closest to the door and heard this loudly and clearly, but could find no known cause. In the children room, Becky encountered an infrared anomaly trying to photograph the doll on the bed. We set up a laser grid over the bed area. The tricycle REMpod was placed on the floor and activated a lot in this room. At times it seemed like an uneven floor was the culprit, but when we tried recreating the instance over the same flooring, it did not activate. We then did EVP work in Dr. Tremonti's archive room. As we were leaving that room, we heard a very loud metal crash (similar to a band cymbal) which was captured on our recording. We were able to find what made the noise behind the door but determined the door stopped short of touching it, none of us touched it, and we could determine no cause for it. It is a beautiful place with an amazing history and we thank Barb for allowing us to investigate! Location History The Rice-Tremonti House in Raytown, Missouri is a building from 1844. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Archibald and Sally Rice had moved to Missouri from North Carolina and eventually built a house in this location around 1836. The current Gothic Revival frame farmhouse replaced the original log house in 1844. The farm was about eight miles south of Independence, MO along the Santa Fe Trail and became a popular stop for travelers. Archibald died in 1849 and his son Elihu Coffee Rice became the owner. In 1850 Elihu married Catherine "Kitty" Stoner White. Sophia White, Kitty's slave, accompanied her there and lived in a cabin near the home's back door. "Aunt Sophie" remained with the family until shortly before her death in 1896. As slave-holding southern sympathizers, Rice and his family moved to Texas during the Civil War. For unknown reasons, the house was not destroyed under General Order No. 11 . It is believed to be the oldest surviving frame building remaining in Jackson County . In 1929 the house was bought by Dr. Louis G. Tremonti and his wife Lois Gloria, who sold the house to the Friends of the Rice-Tremonti Home Association in 1988. The association has restored the home and holds open houses for visitors. The site includes several acres of land, the house, and a replica of a slave cabin referred to as Aunt Sophie's Cabin." • MISSOURI - A House in Kansas City | kcghosts

URBAN LEGENDS MISSOURI - A House in Kansas City by: Jenny Kerr My ex-husband and I were married in 1997, and I moved into the home he currently owned. He bought this home in the mid 80's with a roommate, Tom. After we married Tom moved out. In 1999, a week prior to Thanksgiving, Tom suffered a fatal heart attack and died in his mid 40's. For the week following his death Toms' presence was felt very strongly in our home. It was as if he was in the room with you and if you turned you'd see him there. This lasted for approximately one week and ended when our son, who was a year and half old at the time, was sitting on my lap and waved saying "bye, bye" to someone only he could see.

Wendy observed and took notes. Jennifer has sent two introduction and documentation videos to be put on the site, detailing more information and more description of this experiment. During this experiment, Becky’s camera shut off multiple times, even after changing batteries halfway through. At one point, Becky and Jennifer both heard a shuffling noise on the hardwood floor behind Becky during the experiment. Julie also noted a couple of pops and creaks at that time, possibly just normal house noises. After the experiment, while the rest of the team was still in the experiment room, Julie went to the stairs where she thought she heard someone whistling behind her while facing the front door. She relayed this to the team, none of whom were whistling. We went upstairs to investigate Mrs. Tremonti’s room. We did an EVP session and took photos. Nothing was noted in this room. When we moved to the east bedroom, Julie's REMpod started responding somewhat erratically. We couldn't pinpoint a cause, possible battery malfunction. Also, something triggered her motion-activated ball and K2 meter in this room, but in no other rooms. Becky checked the floor, which was level. We then moved into the master bedroom and spent some time there. Nothing out of the ordinary was noted. We then moved downstairs to Dr. Tremonti’s office, and things seemed pretty quiet there as well. Several of us had instances of new or relatively new batteries dying throughout the night. The charged atmosphere of the incoming storm did not seem to cause or accelerate any paranormal activity that we could visually see, but the audio and video are still under review. We thank Barb Schlapia and the Friends of the Rice-Tremonti Home for their hospitality. Location History The Rice-Tremonti House in Raytown, Missouri, is a building from 1844. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Archibald and Sally Rice had moved to Missouri from North Carolina and eventually built a house in this location around 1836. The current Gothic Revival frame farmhouse replaced the original log house in 1844. The farm was about eight miles south of Independence, MO, along the Santa Fe Trail, and became a popular stop for travelers. Archibald died in 1849, and his son Elihu Coffee Rice became the owner. In 1850 Elihu married Catherine "Kitty" Stoner White. Sophia White, Kitty's slave, accompanied her and lived in a cabin near the home's back door. "Aunt Sophie" remained with the family until shortly before her death in 1896. As slave-holding southern sympathizers, Rice and his family moved to Texas during the Civil War. For unknown reasons, the house was not destroyed under General Order No. 11. It is believed to be the oldest surviving frame building remaining in Jackson County. In 1929 the house was bought by Dr. Louis G. Tremonti and his wife Lois Gloria, who sold the house to the Friends of the Rice-Tremonti Home Association in 1988. The association has restored the home and holds open houses for visitors. The site includes several acres of land, the house, and a replica of a slave cabin referred to as Aunt Sophie's Cabin." Previous Investigations at this Location Investigation 175: Rice - Tremonti Home - Raytown, MO PHOTOS Front of the Rice-Tremonti house. photo by Jennifer Group EVP experiment. Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail - Visit 3 Location Information Date:25th April, 2015 Type:Business Location Title:Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail - Visit 3 City/State:Council Bluffs, IA Investigation Times:08:00 PM - 01:00 AM Status:Analysis Weather Information Sunrise:06:29 AM Sunset:08:14 PM High Temperature:57 °F Low Temperature:48 °F Sky Condition:Overcast Wind:NE at 12 mph Humidity:96% Precipitation:% Lunar Phase:Waxing Crescent % disk visible:47% Solar X-Rays:Active Geomagnetic Field:Quiet Pressure:29.66 mmHg Investigators Present Christina Anderson Edward Quentin Becky Ray Miranda Stark Location History From the Historical Society of Pottawattomie County: The Jail was built in 1885 and was in continuous use until 1969. It was acquired by the Council Bluffs Park Board in 1971 for preservation, and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 by the United States Government. The Historical Society led an effort in 1977 to save the jail, and today owns and operates the facility. The design and size of the Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail make it a one-of-a-kind structure. It was one of 18 revolving (“squirrel cage”, "human rotary", or "lazy Susan") jails built. It is the only three-story one ever built. Built at a cost of about $30,000, our unique jail has three floors of revolving pie-shaped cells inside a cage. The front part of the building had offices for the jailer, kitchen, trustee cells, and quarters for women. The design was the invention of William H. Brown and Benjamin F. Haugh, both of Indianapolis, Indiana. A patent issued to them on July 12, 1881, declared, "The object of our invention is to produce a jail in which prisoners can be controlled without the necessity of personal contact between them and the jailer." It was to provide "maximum security with minimum jailer attention." As one deputy put it, "If a jailer could count... and he had a trusty he could trust... he could control the jail." The cell section remains much as it did in 1969 when it was closed by the county. The signatures and dates of many of its infamous prisoners remain scratched in the cell walls. It remains a well restored snapshot of an interesting era of our society. Today, only 3 revolving jails remain: a one-story structure in Gallatin, Missouri; a two-story jail in Crawfordsville, Indiana; and the unique three-story jail here. All three are preserved as museums. The Squirrel Cage Jail provides students and adults the opportunity to experience first-hand a unique piece of cultural and architectural history and to gain an understanding of this building’s unique place in cultural and national history. Its one-of-a-kind structure is unlikely to be duplicated again. Investigators Notes No investigators notes yet Previous Investigations at this Location Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail - Visit 2, 10th November, 2012 Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail - Visit 1, 1st May, 2010 EVPS Odd Voice - 25th April, 2015 - Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail - Visit 3 - Council Bluffs, IA 00:00 / 00:00 This is a clip from the library on the 4th floor.
