URBAN LEGENDS MISSOURI - Kansas City Union Station by: Becky Ray On the morning of June 17, 1933, a mass murder committed in front of Union Railway Station, Kansas City, Missouri, shocked the American public into a new consciousness of the serious crime problems in the Nation. The killings, which took the lives of four peace officers and their prisoner, are now known as The Kansas City Massacre. The Kansas City Massacre involved the attempt by Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Vernon Miller and Adam Richetti to free their friend, Frank Nash, a Federal prisoner. At the time, Nash was in the custody of several law enforcement officers who were returning him to the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, from which he had escaped on October 19, 1930. Nash's criminal record reached back to 1913, when he was sentenced to life at the State Penitentiary, McAlester, Oklahoma, for murder. He was later pardoned. In 1920, he was given a 25-year sentence at the same penitentiary for burglary with explosives, and later pardoned. On March 3, 1924, Nash began a 25-year sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth for assaulting a mail custodian. He escaped on October 19, 1930. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched an intensive search for Nash which extended over the entire United States and parts of Canada. Evidence gathered by the FBI indicated that Nash had assisted in the escape of seven prisoners from the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth on December 11, 1931. The investigation also disclosed Nash's close association with Francis L. Keating, Thomas Holden and several other well-known gunmen who had participated in a number of bank robberies throughout the Midwest. Keating and Holden were apprehended by FBI Agents on July 7, 1932, at Kansas City, Missouri. Information gained by the FBI as a result of the apprehension of these two indicated that Nash was receiving protection from his underworld contacts in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Based on such information, two FBI Agents, Frank Smith and F Joseph Lackey, and McAlester, Oklahoma, Police Chief Otto Reed located and apprehended Nash on June 16, 1933, in a store in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The law officers drove Nash to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where at 8:30 that night, they boarded a Missouri Pacific train bound for Kansas City, Missouri. It was due to arrive there at 7:15 am on June 17. Before leaving, the lawmen made arrangements for R. E. Vetterli, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI's Kansas City Office to meet them at the train station. Meanwhile, a number of outlaw friends of Nash had heard of his capture in Hot Springs. They learned the time of the scheduled arrival of Nash and his captors in Kansas City and made plans to free him. The scheme was conceived and engineered by Richard Tallman Galatas, Herbert Farmer, "Doc" Louis Stacci, and Frank B. Mulloy. Vernon Miller was designated to free Nash, and while at Mulloy's tavern in Kansas City, he made a number of phone calls for assistance in the scheme. At about this time, two gunmen, "Pretty Boy" Floyd and Adam Richetti, arrived in Kansas City, and they agreed to aid in the mission. On their way to Kansas City, Floyd and Richetti had been detained at Bolivar, Missouri, early on the morning of the 16th, when the car in which they were riding became disabled. While the two were waiting in a local garage for the necessary repairs to the car, Sheriff Jack Killingsworth entered the building. Richetti, who immediately recognized the Sheriff, seized a machine gun and held the Sheriff and the garage attendants against the wall. Floyd drew two .45 caliber automatic pistols and ordered all parties to remain motionless. Floyd and Richetti then transferred their arsenal into another automobile and ordered the Sheriff to enter that vehicle. The two, along with their prisoner, then drove to Deepwater, Missouri, abandoned that automobile and commandeered another. After releasing the Sheriff, they arrived in Kansas City at about 10:00 pm on June 16. There Floyd and Richetti abandoned that automobile and stole another car to which they transferred their baggage and firearms. Finally, that same night, they met Miller and went with him to his home. There Miller told them of his plan to free Frank Nash. Early the next morning, Miller, Floyd and Richetti drove to the Union Railway Station in a Chevrolet sedan. There they took up their positions to await the arrival of Nash and his captors. Upon the arrival of the train in Kansas City, Agent Lackey went to the loading platform, leaving Smith, Reed and Nash in a stateroom of the train. On the platform, he was met by SAC Vetterli, who was accompanied by FBI Agent R. J. Caffrey and Officers W. J. Grooms and Frank Hermanson of the Kansas City Police Department. These men surveyed the area surrounding the platform and saw nothing that aroused their suspicion. SAC Vetterli advised Agent Lackey that he and Caffrey had brought two cars to Union Station and that the cars were parked immediately outside. Agent Lackey then returned to the train and--accompanied by Chief Reed, SAC Vetterli, Agents Caffrey and Smith, and Officers Hermanson and Grooms--proceeded from the train through the lobby of Union Station. At the time, both Agent Lackey and Chief Reed were armed with shotguns. Other officers carried pistols. Frank Nash walked through Union Station with the above-mentioned seven officers. Upon leaving Union Station, the lawmen, with their captive, paused briefly; and, again seeing nothing that aroused their suspicion, they proceeded to Caffrey's Chevrolet. Frank Nash was handcuffed throughout the trip from the train to the Chevrolet, which was parked directly in front of the east entrance of Union Station. Agent Caffrey unlocked the right door of the Chevrolet. When the door was opened, Nash started to get into the back set; however, Agent Lackey told Nash to get into the front of the car. Lackey then climbed into the back of the car directly behind the driver's seat. Agent Smith sat beside him in the center of the back; and Chief Reed sat beside Smith in the right rear seat. At this point, Agent Caffrey walked around the car to get into the driver's seat through the left door. SAC Vetterli stood with Officers Hermanson and Grooms at the right side near the front of the car. A green Plymouth was parked about six feet away on the right side of Agent Caffrey's car. Looking in the direction of this Plymouth, Agent Lackey saw two men run from behind a car. He noticed that both men were armed. At least one of them had a machine gun. Before Agent Lackey had a chance to warn his fellow officers, one of the gunmen shouted, "Up, up!" At this instant, Agent Smith--who was in the middle of the back seat--also saw a man with a machine gun to the right of the Plymouth. SAC Vetterli, who was standing at the right front of the Chevrolet turned just in time to hear a voice command, "Let 'em have it!" At this point, from a distance approximately 15 feet diagonally to the right of Agent Caffrey's Chevrolet, an individual crouched behind the radiator of another car opened fire. Officers Grooms and Hermanson immediately fell to the ground. They were dead. SAC Vetterli--who was standing beside Office Grooms and Hermanson--was shot in the left arm and dropped to the ground. As he attempted to scramble to the left side of the car to join Agent Caffrey, who had not yet entered the driver's seat of the Chevrolet, SAC Vetterli saw Caffrey fall to the ground. He had been fatally wounded in the head. Inside the car, Frank Nash and Chief Reed were killed by bullets from the hoodlums' guns. Agents Lackey and Smith were able to survive the massacre by falling forward in the back seat of the Chevrolet. Lackey was struck and seriously wounded by three bullets. Smith was unscathed. The three gunmen rushed to the lawmen's car and looked inside. One of them was heard to shout "They're all dead. Let's get out of here." With that, they raced toward a dark-colored Chevrolet. Just then a Kansas City policeman emerged from Union Station and began firing in the direction of one of the killers, later identified as Floyd, who slumped briefly but continued to run. The killers entered the car which sped westward out of the parking area, and disappeared. The three survivors--Agents Smith and Lackey and SAC Vetterli--reported that the assault lasted possibly 30 seconds. They were uncertain if three or four gunmen staged the assault. From their account, it was apparent that the two Kansas City Police Officers were killed immediately, followed seconds later by Frank Nash and Chief Reed and then by Agent Caffrey, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. The FBI immediately initiated an investigation to identify and apprehend the gunmen. The investigation developed evidence that the scheme was carried out by Vernon C. Miller, Adam C. Richetti, and Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd. The evidence included latent fingerprint impressions located by FBI Agents on beer bottles in Miller's Kansas City home and identified as those of Adam Richetti, thus helping to link the latter to the crime. Vernon C. Miller, age 37, who had led the killings at Kansas City's Union Station on June 17, grew up in South Dakota. He had enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I and received extensive training as a machine gunner. Following his release from the Army, he appeared at Huron, South Dakota, where he told stories of his heroism in the war. He also demonstrated to city officials that he was a crack shot, following which he was elected to the position of policeman in 1920. Two years later, he was elected Sheriff and was renominated for the position. Before the election, however, he disappeared and entered a life of crime. Miller's criminal record indicated that he had been arrested on April 4, 1923, and received at the South Dakota Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to serve a sentence of two to ten years and to pay a $5,200 fine for embezzling public funds. In October, 1925, he was indicted in Federal Court, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for violating the National Prohibition Act; the case was nolle prossed in January, 1931. Miller then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and Chicago where he began his association with underworld gangs. Miller was reported to have been a hired gunman for Louis Buchalter early in his crime career. Following the Kansas City Massacre, Miller, accompanied by a girlfriend, Vivian Mathias, traveled to Chicago and reportedly arrived there on or about June 19, 1933. For a few days, he hid out with a member of the Barker-Karpis gang. From there Miller reportedly went to New York. On October 31, 1933, FBI investigation disclosed that Miller was back in Chicago at the apartment of Vivian Mathias. The next day, he escaped a trap set for him there by the FBI. However, Mathias was taken into custody and later pleaded guilty to charges of harboring and concealing Miller. On November 29, 1933, during the FBI's search for Miller, his mutilated body was found in a ditch on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan. He had been beaten and strangled. Information received by the FBI indicated that Miller had been involved in an altercation with a henchman of Longie Zwillman, head of New Jersey's underworld mob, in Newark; during the argument, Miller had shot the henchman. Another of Zwillman's associates reportedly retaliated by killing Miller. Meanwhile, the FBI's hunt for "Pretty Boy" Floyd and Adam Richetti continued. Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd, about 29 years old at the time of the Kansas City Massacre, had been arrested on numerous occasions, the first by the St. Louis, Missouri, Police Department on September 16, 1925, for highway robbery. He pleaded guilty to that charge on December 8, 1925, was sentenced to the State Penitentiary at Jefferson City, Missouri, and released on March 7, 1929. Two days later, on March 9, 1929, he was arrested by the Kansas City Police Department for investigation, and on May 6, 1929, for vagrancy and suspicion of highway robbery. In both instances, he was released. On May 20, 1930, Floyd was arrested by the Toledo, Ohio, Police Department on a bank robbery charge and on November 24, 1930, was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in the Ohio State Penitentiary. Floyd escaped enroute to the penitentiary and was a fugitive when he became involved in the Kansas City Massacre. Adam C. Richetti, about 23 years old at the time of the Kansas City Massacre, began his criminal career with an arrest in Hammond, Indiana, on August 7, 1928, for a holdup. Richetti was sentenced from one to ten years in the State Reformatory, Pendleton, Indiana, for that crime. He was paroled on October 2, 1930, and discharged from the parole on September 23, 1931. His next arrest occurred on March 9, 1932, at Sulphur, Oklahoma, for bank robbery; he subsequently served a sentence at the State Penitentiary, McAlester, Oklahoma, from April 5, 1932, to August 25, 1932, when he was released and placed on bond which he forfeited. Richetti subsequently was sought for jumping the $15,000 bond, and was wanted at Tishomingo, Oklahoma, for robbery. After fleeing from the Kansas City Massacre, Floyd and Richetti made their way to Toledo, Ohio, where they met Beulah, also known as Juanita, and Rose Baird in early September, 1933. >From there the four traveled to Buffalo, New York. On September 21, 1933, Floyd and Beulah Baird, using the names of Mr. and Mrs. George Sanders, and Richetti and Rose Baird, using the names Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brennan, rented an apartment in that city. The other occupants of the apartment building considered the two couples very mysterious inasmuch as they seldom left the apartment, then usually for brief visits to the grocery store. During their occupancy, Floyd reportedly walked from the front to the rear of the apartment almost constantly, an activity that caused much curiosity on the part of the other building occupants. The two couples never visited with any of their neighbors, though they were friendly toward the neighborhood children who sometimes were permitted to enter the apartment. The women occasionally threw money from the windows of the apartment to the children playing in the street, or offered them candy. In October, 1934, the couples agreed to return to Oklahoma. Rose Baird was given money to purchase a car, and she bought a Ford sedan which was to carry them west. The four began the trip early on October 20, with Floyd driving. A few hours later, near Wellsville, Ohio, he skidded the automobile into a telephone pole. Floyd and Richetti removed their firearms from the vehicle and remained on the outskirts of the town, while Rose and Beulah Baird took the damaged car into a Wellsville garage for repairs. The Wellsville, Ohio, Police Chief, J H. Fultz, following up on reports that two suspicious-looking men were seen on the outskirts of town, found the two resting in a wood tract of land nearby. A gun battle ensued. Chief Fultz apprehended Richetti after Richetti had emptied his gun at the officer. Floyd escaped, but the Police Chief thought Floyd might have been wounded. The FBI and local authorities conducted an intensive search for Floyd in eastern Ohio following the above incident. This included interviews of numerous persons in the predominantly rural countryside, including doctors and hospital personnel whom Floyd might approach if, in fact, he was wounded. Eight of the participants in this search--a squad of four FBI Agents led by Melvin Purvis, along with a squad of four East Liverpool, Ohio, police officers headed by Chief of Police Hugh McDermott--were jointly patrolling a group of roads south of Clarkson, Ohio, in two cars on October 22, when they noticed an automobile move from behind a corn crib on a farm. The officers had been questioning all persons whom they saw; and in an effort to question the occupants of this automobile, they stopped their cars. At this point, the vehicle that had attracted their attention drove back to its original position behind the corn crib, and a man whom the officers immediately recognized as Floyd jumped from the car with a .45 caliber automatic pistol in his right hand. As the officers reached Floyd, he said, "I'm done for; you've hit me twice." They took the pistol from his hand and also seized a second gun that he carried in his belt. Then two FBI Agents left to summon an ambulance to take Floyd to a hospital. They were accompanied by a local citizen who had witnessed the encounter. Two other local citizens, including the owner of the farm where the shooting took place, also were witnesses to the action that had occurred. Floyd died about 15 minutes after he was shot. At the time Floyd was killed, a watch and fob, consisting of a "lucky piece," were found on his person. Groups of ten notches were found on each of these items - reportedly carved by Floyd as an indication of the number of people he had killed. Rose and Beulah Baird, who were in the Wellsville garage attending to the repair of the wrecked automobile when they overheard the discussion of Richetti's being taken into custody, had left immediately for Kansas City, Missouri. Later they traveled to the home of Floyd's family in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, where they attended the funeral of Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd. Adam Richetti, following his apprehension, was returned to Kansas City, Missouri, and on March 1, 1935, was indicted by the Jackson County Grand Jury on four counts of murder in the first degree. His trial, predicated on the indictment charging him with the murder of Frank E. Hermanson, one of the police officers killed in the Kansas City, Missouri, Massacre, began in Kansas City on June 10, 1935. On June 17, the jury returned a verdict of guilty with the recommendation that Richetti be given the death penalty. He was sentenced to be hanged. Richetti appealed his conviction, but it was affirmed by the State of Missouri Supreme Court on May 3, 1938. Subsequently, Richetti's lawyers alleged Richetti to be insane, and a hearing was held at which time his sanity was clearly established. On August 31, 1938, Richetti was again sentenced to death, this time in the gas chamber of the Missouri State Penitentiary of Jefferson City, Missouri. He was executed on October 7, 1938. The four individuals - Richard Galatas, Herbert Farmer, "Doc" Louis Stacci, and Frank Mulloy - who, investigation disclosed, had engineered the conspiracy to free Nash, were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury at Kansas City, Missouri, on October 24, 1934. On January 4, 1935, the four were found guilty of conspiracy to cause the escape of a Federal Prisoner from the custody of the United States. On the following day, each was sentenced to serve two years in a Federal Penitentiary and pay a fine of $10,000, the maximum penalty allowed by law. Submitted by: Becky Investigation info below is submitted by: Kelli Several of our investigators got the chance to investigate Union Station a couple of years ago. We started at 9:30 pm and ended around 5 am. During this investigation, a security guard came up to us and mentioned that the security dispatch saw a man sitting on the bench in the "Union Station historical room" just above Pierpont's restaurant. Dispatch sent a guard to investigate because it was after hours and patrons shouldn't have been there at that time. When the guard arrived to where the man was sitting, dispatch radioed that the guard was right in front of him. The guard didn't see anyone. Dispatch also realized he didn't have a head! They believe this is Frank Nash, the gangster killed during the Kansas City Massacre at Union Station in 1933. He had received so many bullets to the neck, that it was severed. Dispatch didn't think to save the tape and it was recorded over. Frank Nash has been seen by visitors and staff over the years, day and night. There are several bathrooms that are supposedly haunted. A visitor was in one bathroom washing their hands when they heard someone or something from one of the stalls say, "I will be out in a minute." No one else was in the bathroom at the time besides the person washing their hands. In the tunnels, there is supposed to be a worker, who pulled the luggage off the trains, that still roams the tunnels. When we investigated the tunnels, I was trailing behind our group with my video camera and flashlight, when someone blew on my neck. I looked around and didn't see anyone. In the tunnels, there is no air movement, so it was not any fans or air blowing on my neck. When we came back through, I was still trailing behind and had something blow on my neck again. We were told that there was a morgue in the area we were at. The morgue was used to hold soldiers caskets waiting to be shipped to other places during World War I. The tunnels are off limits to visitors.

As the twelve new limestone jail cells were opened hostilities between free state and pro-slavery forces were reaching a boiling point in the area. In 1854, Congress had passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which opened the Kansas Territory to settlement. The act provided for popular sovereignty in determining the issue of slavery. The result of this act was violent guerilla fighting which terrorized local populations on both sides of the Missouri and Kansas lines as abolitionists poured into the Kansas Territory. In Jackson County, the Battles of Independence and Lone Jack in 1862 ended in Confederate victories. The state of Missouri was held in the union by military force even though the elected Governor and legislators had voted to secede from the Union. In Jackson County, old grudges erupted between families, and neighbor turned against neighbors. Women and children were arrested and placed in the 1859 Jail now under the command of the Union Provost Marshals nicknamed the “Little Gods” for the power they had over the population. When the Jail overflowed with the residents of Jackson County, other buildings were used as jails. One of those buildings collapsed and several young girls were killed. Historians believe that this action resulted in the raid on Lawrence, Kansas in 1863. The raid resulted in the infamous Order No. 11 being issued which depopulated Jackson County as well as other counties along the Kansas-Missouri border. The enforcement of this order resulted in terrible hardships for the residents, many women and children had to walk to Texas or Kentucky. Many were killed in the act of obeying the order, Union and Southern families alike. Many families never returned to Jackson County after the war. Independence artist George Caleb Bingham captured their misery on canvas (and another copy was painted on a tablecloth). He later produced an engraving of the painting and sold signed, numbered copies of “Martial Law.” One of his signed proofs is on display at the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum. Reproductions are available for sale. Decades after the war ended in Missouri, the citizens of Jackson county felt the lingering bitterness and uncertainty of that great conflict. Out of these tumultuous times rode Missouri’s most notorious outlaws. Outlaws like the James boys and Youngers used the remaining animosities from the outrages of the war to stay a step ahead of the law for nearly twenty years. In the spring of 1882, Jesse James was murdered. His older brother, Frank, began negotiations with the Missouri governor to surrender because he feared assassination. Frank James spent almost six months in the Jackson County limestone jail. In 1901, a brick jail was added to the back of the limestone jail to house chain gangs. Chain gangs were used to build roads, sewers and other tasks assigned them. They left six days a week at sunrise and returned at sunset. One inmate spent a year on the chain gang for stealing a cow. You can see the Marshal’s home from Main Street, but the two-story limestone jail and the 1901 chain gang jail joins the rear of the home. Take a self-guided tour of the jail and museum for a first-hand look at frontier justice. Tour the beautifully decorated home where the wife and children of the marshal lived. Guided tours are available upon request in advance." Visitors have reported feelings of nausea and extreme cold. Guards sometimes hear phantom footsteps, growling noises and the sound of a man gasping for air. In addition, a spectral man in a blue uniform has also been seen in the center south cell. It has been thought that the man in the blue uniform may be Henry Bugler who was the Jackson County sheriff. He was killed at the jail in 1866 and was the first law officer in Jackson County to be murdered. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:---The night was pretty quiet actually for me. I started out on the 1st floor with the girls. We sat in Cell 1 for a while which is to your right when you enter the jail on the 1st floor. I didn't feel anything or hear or see anything that grabbed my attention. ---About 9-930p We then moved to Cell number 4 which is to the left of you as you enter the jail cells on the 1st floor. You could definitely feel a difference immediately as you entered the cell. The air was stale and non-moving. Immediately I felt hot kind of like when you have the flu and you have a high fever. I also felt at times sick to my stomach and had knots in my stomach almost like someone punched my side. At times I would feel a tingling sensation go up my left arm, almost as if I sat on it for a long time and I had not since we were all standing in the room. Before we all decide to shift about in the room, my back began to hurt to the point standing up was painful. I could feel my spine tingle. --I took some photos while in the room but nothing of importance came about. --2nd floor around 10-103p we traded floors. We set up in the upstairs jail cell area but didn't stay long as we did a walk-thru for the 2nd time and as we walked into the middle bedroom which has the doll we all made comments about how it looked. The room definitely felt different to me as I felt dizzy a bit but not enough to sit down. We decided to camp out in the master bedroom as I did not see or hear or feel anything. -- We checked out the 2nd-floor jail cell and nothing came upon us or myself that was noteworthy. --One last place we all came together in the back museum section of the jail and nothing came about. --All in all great place to visit if you are in Independence, MO one of the many places just in that area to visit that have lots of history. -- I will post some pictures I have for you to determine what it is. Sevren Jacobs: The team I was in consisted of Becky, Miranda, and Angela and I started off our investigation on the first floor. The equipment I used was a digital audio recorder and an Olympus 35mm flash camera. I have reviewed my photographs from that night and had not encountered anything more than flash refraction off of the many windows inside the building. My audio came up pretty clear as well. The only exception is when we were investigating the baby carriage that was out in the first-floor walkthrough which seemed to be giving off varying and intermittent EMF readings. While Miranda was taking readings of the carriage I created a new audio file just specifically for the baby carriage which would have been approximately 7-8 minutes long but upon reviewing the file post-investigation I discovered that the file was reduced to 17 seconds of static and fuzz. All audio before and after that file came out very clear. While it is strange I can not find any other logical explanation other than an equipment malfunction. I spent time inside cell 4 with the team I was with and we all seemed to encounter feelings of sickness and varying symptoms of uneasiness. Personally, I experienced a sudden and severe tingling sensation and headache located in the center of my forehead which eventually led to a light bought of lightheadedness/dizziness. At one point my headache started to become overwhelming so I stepped outside jail cell 4 and felt an almost immediate sense of relief. After returning to my corner of the cell my headache resumed but with less intensity. I did not experience any other feelings of sickness or uneasiness anywhere else in the building. While inside the cell I was standing against one of the back corners and facing the doorway and I saw a very tall dark shadow-like figure step out into the doorway of jail cell 1 from behind the opened cell door and then step back behind the door. I was unable to photograph this unusual visual because it happened so fast. Becky who was also standing in the back of the jail in the corner opposite me encountered the same vision of this shadow that briefly stepped into the doorway of cell 1. The team and I then proceeded upstairs to the upstairs of the building which consisted of bedrooms and more jail cells. I did not experience anything out of the ordinary while we were up there. Beth McLenaghan: What a fascinating and beautiful old building!! I got one photo with what seems to be a moving orb in it, and a couple of photos with what might be faint dust orbs. While on the second floor, I heard (clearly) what sounded like a growl, following some laughter from the part of the group who was in the jail level below. I felt decidedly uncomfortable in the smaller, middle kid's room on the second floor, and kept finding myself looking over my shoulder, feeling like someone was standing there, glowering. I felt nothing on the lower level, ironically... not even in the jail cell area where stuff is consistently reported. I did have a mild headache by the time we got into the museum/display/info section downstairs but totally attributed that to the heat. After sitting by the display case in the area where the high EMF readings were, I DID experience ringing in my ears- but thought that probably had more to do with the heat than the EMF. The photo with the moving orb was taken above the display case in what I'm assuming was the north-east section of the building, where the EMF readings were consistently high. Hugh McLenaghan: During this investigation, I didn’t see or feel anything. We did have some interesting EMF readings in one of the rooms upstairs. The field seemed to move around the room and you could follow it with the meter. It would go away, and then come back and move around the room again. As we were going into the jail cell area on the upper floor, we heard what sounded like a growling noise (Both Beth and myself heard it). We watched the video from that time but it wasn’t on the video. Becky Ray: We started the investigation at approximately 8:00 pm by meeting our hosts Steve Noll and his wife in the main office which was originally the kitchen area of the Marshal's home. We were given a tour through the building and then split into two teams. One with four members and the other with three. One group was Hugh and Beth McLenaghan and Todd Sheets, and the other group consisted of Miranda Dykes, Sevren Bernal, Angela Drew, and me. Our groups started on the first floor, while the other started on the second. We unpacked our equipment in the 1903 Jail Expansion area that is now used for Museum Displays. We walked through the entire first-floor area again, taking base readings and checking out anything out of the ordinary to see what possible explanations we could find. During our initial walkthrough with the entire group, Todd had discovered some odd EMF readings around a baby buggy in the front hallway. It seemed to me that there has to be some sort of rational explanation for this, even though the readings were not consistent, and fluctuated from nothing at all to high. When we returned to this area, Miranda checked it out with a different type of EMF meter, and her findings were consistent with Todd's. I thought that perhaps the buggy had become magnetized, or perhaps something near it had. The buggy is almost entirely made of wood, and the only thing close to it is a fire extinguisher which had very consistent low readings. There were no electrical outlets nearby, nor were there any wirings in the walls. I checked inside the buggy, and all that was in it was a blanket and two non-magnetized pine cones. We could find no explanation at this time for these readings. However, when we returned to the 1903 Jail Expansion area with detectors on, EMF readings were erratic almost everywhere. Our other half discovered this same thing when they returned here. After much investigating it was discovered that this room is a hotbed of EMF leakage. So any EMF readings taken in this area are worthless for our purposes. EMF stands for Electro-Magnetic Fields, that's exactly what EMF detectors pick up. Electric charges create electric fields. Electric charges that move create magnetic fields. EMF detectors were not invented as "Ghost Detectors," but as devices to measure safe levels of these fields. At approximately 9:20 pm our group decided to set up in some of the first floor cells. There are many legends when it comes to this location. Some say many prisoners were hanged here, some say they were tossed from the second floor over for these hangings, and some say worse. However, Jackson County historians report that yes, they have historical proof that there were in fact hangings in the prison, but they were hanged in a cell on the first floor, not from the second down. Which cell, however, is an unknown. We had been told several different cells when it came to which one was the most haunted, so we decided to spend some time in each one, starting with Cell 1. Personally, I felt nothing at all in there. In fact, if I did feel anything, it almost made me feel giddy, which was quite amazing, considering all the horrible things that happened in this place. I turned my audio recorder on, and we tried to capture some EVP by asking questions, but I got nothing on my audio recorder. I also had my IR video on the whole time we were in there, and captured nothing at all. After we all decided we were getting nothing at all in Cell 1, we decided to move across the hallway to Cell 4. As soon as we walked in the doorway everyone's mood changed. I left my video running as we made the change, and it is clear even on camera. It is like someone sucks the air out of all of us. I immediately noticed the temperature change. There was a 10-degree change from the hallway to inside that cell. It was much hotter, and I personally felt like I had a great weight placed on my chest. As we did in Cell 1, we each took a corner and set up again. After just four minutes every one of us had talked about feeling greatly ill and nauseated. It was at this time that I captured something strange in my video. In the video clip, you'll hear us talking about not feeling well, then Angela will take a photo, you'll hear her say, "Flash," and see the flash. Then I'll say, "Flash" and you'll see the flash. Then I'll say, "I'm going to take another one," and then there is this strange anomaly before my next flash. I'm not saying it is paranormal, because it is almost too geometrical. But what the hell is it?? Does it seem to resemble a playing card maybe? This video is available for viewing, as is a still from the video and the photo that was taken. Less than two minutes later, Miranda captured a strange sound, possible EVP on her audio recorder. I captured part of this on my video camera, but not on my audio recorder. Sevren did not capture it on her audio recorder either. Shortly after this, I commented on how I had been watching the shadow on the floor in front of me from the light coming in from the hallway. There is a video containing this conversation available for viewing. Later, around 9:48 I asked if anyone else saw what I just saw. Again, there is a video containing this conversation available for viewing. At approximately 10:00 pm we switch floors with the other group. I set my video camera up on the second floor as well but didn't capture anything out of the ordinary. We sat in each of the bedrooms for about 10 to 15 minutes each but didn't experience anything of note. We sat the longest in the master bedroom with no experience. Todd Sheets: For me, the experience was pretty cool… There was an old baby cart that seemed to have something going on – it gave off strong EMF readings and it had a very interesting “vibe” I felt… also – when standing down the long hall in front of the cart – there seemed to be a shadow of a person standing over it. Now the back area, the “museum” area… this was an insane EMF nightmare – Hugh and I noticed right away the EMF readings went off the chart – I had never seen anything do this in an entire room… especially not one this big – but after we did some Sherlocking, it was found that the culprit may have been OLD water pipes that had been crossed over the old electrical and it seemed to have “charged” the pipes. These pipes ran into the flooring AND the ceiling areas. Finally, in the back bedroom with the organ, there was EMF activity that could easily be tracked by the detector and followed all over – it moved. It would seem to sit in a chair and then move away to the bed and so forth. Also – I noticed flashes and shadows and such. This room had an odd smell too at one time – it was kind of musty and then the air turned sweet. Miranda Stark: This investigation was quite interesting. I'd heard stories of it being haunted for most of my life, has always been a resident of Independence. I'd only toured this location once as a visitor some years before actually having the honor of investigating it for the possibility of paranormal activity with PAI. I currently have the privilege of living just a few short blocks from the jail on the historic Independence square. My husband and I live next door to one of the area's most reputable historians. I was fortunate enough to get some very detailed background history on the Marshal's Jail from our neighbor. He was also kind enough to give me a copy of an execution notice from 1894 for a "Harry Jones", which is signed by the Marshal of Jackson County. You may see this under the photos section for this investigation. It is believed that many executions were performed in the form of hanging in one of the cells on the first floor. Ironically many reports over the years state that there is one cell in particular that invokes feelings of uneasiness, nausea, and even fear. Could there be any correlation between these "feelings" from today's visitors and the history imprinted upon the stone surroundings of this place during the height of its function in the late 1800s? It is believed that certain types of stone can act as a sort of "sponge" and absorb residual energies of the past. With this idea in mind, I would like to mention that another fellow investigator from PAI captured an anomaly that seems to appear on the stone wall of the corridor outside of one of the cells where we had been involved in an investigation vigil. Everyone present at that time began expressing feelings of illness, and general uneasiness immediately upon entering cell 4. We began experiencing what we thought were tricks of light, in the form of moving shadows in, and outside, of this cell. Becky had her night shot video running from the back corner of the cell, aimed toward the corridor. Angela flashed a photograph into the same corridor where nothing could be seen from her angle besides the stone wall. Becky standing just beside her decided to do the same, and also flashed a photograph of the same area, where nothing out of the ordinary occurs on the video when the flash is seen. Then Becky takes the second photograph in a very similar manner to the first one, and there on the video recording, just before that flash of the camera, it is clear to see a strange anomalous shape appear on the wall in the corridor. This did not appear during the first flash of Becky's camera, nor Angela's. Upon close inspection of this "figure", it is difficult to explain what it may be. There seems to be wide agreement amongst most people who look at the still frame of this anomaly, that it resembles the image of a playing card, with a very well-defined shape of the ace of spades in the center. This makes us speculate upon the possibility of residual energy being contained within the stone, and the time spent there by prisoners who may have had nothing else to do but to pass the numerous hours by card playing. Beth even proposes that one of the prisoners may have been held in jail for gambling charges. Is this possible? Could we have been shown an image that was of great significance to someone who spent much of their time there more than one hundred years ago? Another thing to consider is that I did capture an odd sound on my audio recorder during this same time, about two minutes after this visual anomaly appears on the video. At first, it sounded like a deep male voice, which would be strange because there were only four of us on that entire floor at that time, and we are all female. It can be heard after the verbal statement asking anyone present to please speak, or make their presence known to us. It is difficult to make out any words, so it is possible that this is just an anomalous sound that was inaudible to us at that time. It is caught in the same place on one other investigator's recorder, but it does not appear on two others that were on at that time. Do I personally feel that this jail is "haunted"? It's hard to say, but I firmly believe that some energies do reside here, even if they are nothing more than residual recordings of the past. EVPS Puppy - 08:04 PM - 10th June, 2006 - 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum 00:00 / 00:00 This was recorded shortly after we arrived. The dog of one of our hosts was present for the first 30 minutes of the investigation until he was taken home. You can clearly hear the voice of a young child saying "Puppy, puppy". There were no children present, but there was a baby carriage present in the hallway, which was giving off some strange EMF readings. However we did have some strange fluctuations happening with the Natural EM Meter that we could not explain. As we would sit vigil in an area, the meter seemed to go off as if someone was walking down the hallway. I do not feel that this was in response to anything we were doing or saying, just an anomaly. In watching the DVR cams live during the investigation, there was a lot of dust in the air from the painting and construction being done. I found nothing unexplainable on my audio/video or still photos. I am interested in doing more experimentation with the EM Meter to try to find the causes for the fluctuations that night, as it rarely responds at all on investigations. Jennifer Sprague:First I'd like to thanks those involved for allowing us to come for the second time to do this follow up investigation, it was very much appreciated and we were very excited and happy to be there. On this investigation we set up many different cameras in various places where paranormal activity was reported. We are in the process of reviewing that footage as well as reviewing all our audio and will post any interesting findings soon. We began this investigation doing a base emf reading sweep over the reported areas and noticed nothing out of the ordinary with any of those readings. On this investigation we did have some interesting things happen with one one of our detector meters which seemed to go off and respond to various questions we asked, it is interesting that it occasionally went off in every area we sat at, even when we tried it in different locations and checked the settings. Even though at times it did seem to respond to certain things and questions, I can not say with 100% certainty that we had some communication of some sort with something paranormal, for instance it could have been picking up on residual energy as the place is very commonly used and has been throughout the years, the experience with the meter leaves many debatable questions which is why I can't say with 100% that the meter picked up on something paranormal, I look forward to reviewing the footage in more detail. At one point after some evp questions a door seemed to open by itself, and I'm looking forward to reviewing the footage on that soon too. A lot of us had some auditory experiences on this investigation and I look forward to going over the footage to see if anything coincides and shows up on any of the recordings we had as well! Overall, I feel it was an interesting investigation and I look forward to going back! I will post more investigation notes soon! I must thank RipeTV for the opprotunity to join them on this production. I am most grateful for their hospitality and kindness. I hope to join RipeTV on another production in the future. ----- One Night In South Bend It was my initial thought to keep my report strictly to what I was brought to South Bend, Indiana for, to observe and validate any paranormal experiences Miss Molly Shea and Miss Janelle Perry had during their overnight stay in the Raven House. My initial thought, however, has changed from just reporting on what the two young ladies experienced to my overall experience in the home. I have been an investigator with the Paranormal Activity Investigators since July 2003. Prior to that my experience was more of a research capacity. I conducted Electronic Voice Phenomena experiments, read scientific studies that looked into aspects of paranormal phenomena captured over the years, and essentially everything under the sun short of investigating supposed haunted locations. When it came to meeting others who actually wanted to investigate the phenomenon I was more than thrilled to join them. I was extremely excited that there was a group of people actually wanting to stay as scientific as they could, because it's hard enough to prove that the existence of life beyond death (or life beyond this life) and to add a mystical element just hurts (in my opinion) the cause even more. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that there are genuine psychics out there, I merely think that in able to get a nonbeliever to somehow believe, that you shouldn't add yet another paranormal (or mystical) element when trying to investigate an area of the unknown. What I initially knew of the Raven House was very limited. I was told that the location was a Bed and Breakfast in South Bend, and that the homeowners were psychic. I was told that the homeowners had several experiences in the home and that they felt that there was several malicious entities that cohabitated the home with them. Through a few phone conversations I was told in so many words that the homeowners were eccentric but very nice and giving in nature. When I initially arrived I was greeted by Barbara Rohrs, who was very kind and offered me a glass of water. She told me to let her know if I needed anything and we spent a few minutes talking about various general topics. My honest opinion at this point was that she, as well as her husband Tab were both very kind people. Barbara gave Angela and I a tour of her home sharing the experiences she has had since moving into the 150+ year old home. She stated that there had been activity throughout the home, but that a majority of the activity had been occurring on the 3rd floor, and that she hardly ever goes up to the 3rd floor, and the few times she does go upstairs she doesn't go alone. I had an initial interesting experience up on the 3rd floor involving a stuffed animal that laid upright on the center of a table on the 3rd floor landing. Upon heading back to the stairs on my was back down to the 2nd floor, I found the stuffed animal to have moved from its initial location to the middle of the landing floor on its side. I put the stuffed animal back and made my way back down to the first floor and told some of the production staff what had happened. I was told by a couple of the production staff that the same thing happened to them during their initial walkthrough the previous day. After some initial taping by production; which also consisted of a segment in which Angela and I walked through the house on our own, the production staff as well as everyone else had lunch. Barbara was kind enough to make lunch for everyone. Angela and I sat in a room which had been added to the house and was used primarily as an office by Barbara and Tab. Following lunch Barbara got on the telephone and invited a couple friends over to join in a séance. After I had finished lunch I got up to set up my equipment, while Angela remained in the back room with some of the production staff and Barbara. After setting up some of my equipment I went back downstairs to get a drink of water as well as cool down. Angela then told me how Barbara had came up to her, leaned over and then in so many words said "I don't know how close you are to your male companion, but this marine that is coming over is very good looking and is very single. Now most psychics will tell you that they don't know it all, and are never 100% correct ... even Barbara "The Grey Witch" had told us that in regards to her ability, although she did told us within the first 5 minutes of meeting her that she can tell a lot about a person by touching them. To those who don't know Angela or I, we are in a serious relationship, but I don't expect anyone outside the group to know that we are because we act professional when representing the group. Simply put, we don't make out, hold hands, or get lovey dovey when working with the media or with the public in general. It was also during the lunch break that Angela told Barbara that the two girls staying the night were going to be there at 5pm. Barbara in response told Angela that she was incorrect. Confused, Angela asked Barbara "What do you mean? They'll be here earlier?" Barbara then told Angela "They chickened out, they didn't even get on the plane." Angela asked "how do you know that?" To which Barbara responded with "I'm psychic". Barbara couldn't be more wrong, the girls had been in South Bend for several hours (they had taken the red eye from California to be exact). So far Barbara was 0 for 2. The two main stars of the program arrived around 4pm and so production went into high gear. They taped a segment in which Barbara gave the two girls a tour of the home (not taking them up on the third floor...to add some suspense I suppose). Following, the girls tour of the home, production taped several interviews, as well as a segment involving Angela and I. The interview was like most interviews I've been on in the past. I was asked what my initial thoughts were on the Raven House and on Barbara and Tab. I responded that my initial thought was that based on the first few hours being there that something was likely present (I based this on the experience involving the stuffed animal as well as another experience I have yet mentioned in this report). I mentioned that I didn't really have an opinion on Barbara and Tab, that my reason for being there was to validate anything Molly and Janelle experienced during their stay. I did state that some of what has been experienced by Tab and Barbara could possibly be explained by a more scientific explanation. That when it came to anything Janelle and Molly might experience in the house that the initial fear of being in an unknown location, as well as being in a dark location can often lead someone to jump to conclusions. I explained how I had walked through the third floor with an EMF detector to get base readings. I explained how high Electromagnetic fields have been scientifically proven to cause paranoia, and hallucinations. I did explain that it was a bit premature for me to respond nonetheless, and that the audio and video equipment I brought would help validate or invalidate anything experienced by the girls. Following the interview I was pulled aside by Angela and was told that Barbara had a conversation with her. Barbara had told Angela that she did not like me, that she found me to be extremely arrogant from the moment I entered the house. She went on to tell Angela that she didn't have a good feeling about Angela and I from the very moment we pulled into the driveway of her home. She felt that we were extremely skeptical and accused us of being paid skeptics brought to the Raven House by RipeTV to debunk (discredit) Barbara and Tab as psychics. This in turn upset me, but I wasn't about to respond to the accusation because I wasn't about to hinder the production currently taking place. The last thing I want to happen was to start a huge argument which would result in Barbara asking everything to leave. Angela told me that she believed she had cleared everything up with Barbara and told her that we were not being paid to be at the Raven House, that our services were free and that we were there to validate anything the girls experienced during their stay up on the third floor. Angela then mentioned to me that Barbara then told her how displeased she was with the two girls that were going to stay on the third floor, and that she mentioned how the girls were very superficial. It was then that the sound guy walked in and had told Barbara that he needed to turn her mic off. Barbara then gave Angela some sort of a psychic reading; which was more of an advise session instead of a psychic reading. After talking with Angela, Barbara entered the kitchen and asked Angela and I to step out to her backyard so that we could talk. Out back we found several people sitting and talking, and so the conversation really never took place, other than the fact that Barbara apologized and told me that she was sorry for what she had said to Angela but that we should charge for our services and that there was nothing wrong with that. I then told her that the reason why we don't charge for our services is that we don't want others feeling that we would alter our findings because we were paid to investigate a location, and that if someone really feels the need to 'pay' our organization, that they can make a donation; which would reimburse us for the video tapes, batteries, gas, another costs involved in investigating a location. With that, everything seemed to be kosher between Barbara, and myself. The evening for the most part was uneventful, as is most investigations. It didn't surprise me that nothing was experienced first hand. I knew that it would take a several hours of listening to audio and syncing it to several hours of video, in able to find any evidence of the paranormal. I will mention that there was a séance conducted by Barbara and her husband Tab. The séance was what I expected. Barbara brought out a few occupants of her home (a child and another individual, who Barbara had indicated earlier had died in the home), whether it was real or not, it indeed took place. A skeptic would look at it and say that she set up the séance in everyone's mind by talking to us about the child and the other 'spirit' that she knows co-habituates in her home with Tab and herself. There was also an unfriendly, evil type entity that she brought out in her séance'. I will say that I got hit on the top of the head during that part of the séance and someone in front of me got tapped on the shoulder right after I got hit in the head. After the séance Angela had informed me that she saw some very blatant foot and leg tapping between Tab and Barbara. I have no clue as to why there would be any tapping of the foot or leg between them because there was no need of it other than to perhaps signal time to move on to another entity or to indicate its time to end the sééance. I think its important to note that Angela and I did not participate in the séance because of objectivity. We were flown to South Bend to observe and validate anything of the paranormal that the talent experienced. Again we were there only to observe the potential paranormal happenings (of a ghost/spirit nature) and not to observe or debunk or even for that matter to validate the abilities of Barbara or Tab. Following the séance we had dinner and production interviewed the two girls who were staying the night on the 3rd floor, as well as a segment involving Molly's management rep making a garlic necklace because Molly felt it would protect her from ghosts. As mentioned before, the rest of the evening was fairly uneventful. I ended up having about 6 hours of audio on the audio recorder left in the room the girls stayed in, as well as several hours of video. I mostly expected the video to only be used as a source to sync the audio to, so that I could validate any findings as not originating from the talent nor any possible production crew that was in the room from time to time. RESULTS: 2:08am: I spent about 20 minutes down in the basement with a video camera. I put a digital record in the laundry room; which was located next to the cannery. I put the recorder in the laundry room because Barbara had relayed a story in which a man had been murdered (stabbed) many times in the cannery and was then dismembered in what is now the laundry room. At 2:08am a loud knock was recorded (as if someone had knocked on the door leading into the laundry room. The knock was not heard by me nor recorded on the video camera I had with me. THE RECORDER LEFT IN THE 'CHILDREN'S ROOM I will note that there was a constant whisper throughout the audio recorder (occurring off and on during the 5+ hours of the recording). I've provided a clip which took place 2 minutes into the recording of such whispering (titled: 2minsintowhispering.mp3) 6mins35secondsletmeout.mp3 As titled 6 mins and 35 seconds into the recording a voice was recorded as seemingly saying "let me out" 2hours29minsinto.mp3 2 hours and 29 minutes into the recording...a member of the production staff came up and checked on the girls. They had a short conversation about how the girls wanted something to eat, and with that the staff member left to get the girls some pizza as well as something to drink. After the staff member had left, the girls had a short conversation regarding something Bryan had told one of them. It is then that you will hear the girls talk, as well as an unknown voice making a comment. I stopped reviewing the audio at 3 hours into it because I no longer had any video to sync the audio to and at that point didn't have a means to validate or invalidate any findings. I have since then been informed that the remaining video will be sent to me and at that time I will finish listening to the remaining 2 hours of audio. POST INVESTIGATION COMMENTS: The morning after the investigation I had told Barbara that I would be in contact with her, so that I could get to her any results I found. On a couple occasions Barbara invited Angela, and I (as well as the rest of the members of the PAI to visit her home and conduct another investigation. We had told her that we looked forward to that opportunity. It was on Friday October 5th that I called Barbara to tell her of the results I had found. Below is a paraphrase of that conversation. "Hi Barbara, it's Bryan Kaplan from the ghost group, did you get my earlier message?" "Sure did." - Barbara "Well I just wanted to let you know that I did have some EVP results and I thought I would share them with you." - Bryan "Oh yeah? What did they say?" - Barbara "Oh [general] phrases, I didn't record anything malicious. Though I had to stop analyzing at about 3 hours into the audio because I haven't received the rest of my video, and don't have anything validate or invalidate any findings from that point on." - Bryan "Well you remember about your cameras focusing up?" - Barbara "................." "Yes I do" -Bryan "Do you remember why they were messing up?" -Barbara "Um yes" - Bryan "It was the spirits fooling around with the cameras, it wasn't the cameras causing them to go out of focus." - Barbara (something about stuff floating on the camera) "for someone who's supposed to be (I believe she was beginning to say in tuned to my psychic ability)" - Barbara "(I interrupt her by saying) Oh I know something was messing around with my cameras" -Bryan (I was humoring her...trying to settle the stormy tide she had created...it didn''t work) "You know I heard what you said to Joe (one of the production guys). I heard what you said to him, that you were there to debunk what me and Tab did. (and also mentioned how upsetting this was to her)" - Barbara "No Actually the opposite took place Barbara. What I said during the interview was that Angela and I were brought in to merely observe and validate anything the girls experienced of a paranormal nature. So if you saw me looking at the girls, it was because I was doing what I was brought there to do...observe the girls and try to validate any paranormal experiences the girls had."-Bryan "You haven't been doing this that long. Only two and a half years. You're not really an investigator. I've been doing this (40) (I believe this is the number she threw out) years. You're not very good at what you do, You didn't even take notes. There was all kinds of shit going on. The production guys were getting locked out of the house. There was all kinds of shit going on, but you were too busy looking at those girls. Your girlfriend was very upset with you. Couldn't you tell? You spent most of the time just staring at those girls. Your girlfriend was very upset." -Barbara "Again Barbara, the very opposite is true. I've had several conversations with Angela about this, and she was not upset with me at all during the investigation at your home." - Bryan "She was very upset, I could see it on her face. If she told you differently, she was fibbing." -Barbara "Nonetheless Barbara I did have some results and I'd be more than happy to email them to you. Do you have an email address?" - Bryan "Yes, Tabber does. its " - Barbara "As I mentioned before I do believe there is some activity in your home, and if the offer still stands, I would like to bring the group out there, if possible next spring." -Bryan "It does stand, but it'll cost you one thousand dollars, its not free." -Barbara "I'll be sure to pass that along to the group. Thanks Barbara, I'll be sure to email you those EVP's" -Bryan "Thanks, I appreciate it." -Barbara Let me say that this conversation was "a bit" upsetting. Upsetting enough that I decided that I should indeed report not only my findings on what was observed during the overnight stay in 'the children's room' but also my experiences with Barbara and Tab. It's a shame that my experiences with Barbara were so negative. I was initially willing to ignore the fact that when it came to Angela and I that she was wrong on both occasions. I wasn't even upset that she initially tried hooking my girlfriend up with a marine friend of hers. I didn't even acknowledge her poor psychic perception that Molly and Janelle chickened out and hadn't even gotten onto their flight to South Bend. But this conversation that took place on October 5th tipped the scales for me. It has nothing to do with her wanting the PAI to pay her $1000 dollars to investigate her home. There's a snowball chance in hell that we'd pay a penny to enter her home. I do find it interesting that she initially made it sound that we were welcome in her home at no charge. After all there was a cost for us to get from Kansas City Missouri to South Bend Indiana. What was upsetting was her constant accusations of me as an investigator of PAI as well as boyfriend to Angela, and as a man in general. I'm sorry Barbara the Grey Witch, but my very initial opinion of you was not a negative one. It was important that I remained a neutral party when it came down to your abilities as a psychic and a medium. I was not there to gage your abilities. I was there to validate any paranormal experiences by Molly and Janelle. I'm sorry to say that based on my experiences in your home that while your home (in my opinion) does indeed have activity, that your ability as a psychic was fairly poor when it came to the 18 hours I was in your home. If I had to rate your ability as a psychic, I would have to give you a failing grade. To RipeTV: Thanks for contacting us and allowing us to help out in your production. It was a very positive experience (in general) and I hope to get involved in any future project (or projects) . I appreciate the kindness you showed to both Angela and I. It was the positive atmosphere that the production crew provided that made the overall experience a very positive one. Thanks! For the most part, this was definitely the most quiet this house has been while I visited in a long time. There were a few phantom smells which were new, such as roses and baby powder, but people did also smell the whiskey scent and old perfume. I believe at least one other person smelled the rotting vegetable odor we have encountered in the past. Other occurrences included once again we had at least one person who was overcome by sadness while we were upstairs and a couple of people mentioned the feeling of being touched. Question: When did the phenomena start? Answer: First reports were in the early 1990s, however it is possible activity was happening earlier and not discussed. Question: Any cold spots? Answer: Cold spots have been reported various places in the home, specifically in the kitchen area. Question: Any physical attacks? Answer: The family that lived in the home in the early 1990s reported numerous attacks of scratches appearing on the husband. Question: How far back can you trace the history of the property? Answer: The home was built around the turn of the century and most owners have been verified via property records. Question: Have there been any deaths or violent occurances in the the property? Answer: Three confirmed deaths in the home, possibly more. Question: Have you heard any legends about this property? Most of the ghostly legends about the place are fairly easily explained, however we did have one experience worth noting. Around 1:45am we were waiting vigil in the smaller ballroom, and as we were joking around there was suddenly a very loud tearing/scratching sound coming from the stage. As I turned to look, I could see the curtains obviously moving as if someone was trying to come through. My first thought was not of anything paranormal, but that there was an intruder in the building. Once the noise stopped and the curtain stopped moving, we approached the stage again to see what might have caused this. We did discover that there were some folded cardboard boxes that had been stacked backstage that had fallen over. This would account for the sounds and the curtains moving. But what caused the boxes to fall? We re-stacked them as they were and tried several times to recreate the sound and curtain movement, but were unsuccessful. We also checked them several times during the night and they never fell over again. Not necessarily paranormal, but definitely odd and as of yet unexplained. Shawn Walsh:This investigation took place at a beautiful historic building. The architecture and history of the building is extremely interesting. There have been reports of unexplained sounds, lights, and even one account of a full body apparition at this location. We were the only three people in the building during this late night investigation. During the investigation I took 75 digital pictures, 3 hours of High Definition video, and recorded around 6 hours of digital audio on two recorders. I have finished review of all of my gathered evidence and have found a couple of possible evp's that need to be reviewed by the group prior to posting. Becky took one digital photo during the investigation I found extremely interesting. The picture is of the balcony area in the main hall. At the time the anomaly was captured. We heard what sounded similar to footsteps coming from the balcony. It exhibits some similarities to a non paranormal orb, but has some differences that make it one of the more interesting orb like pictures I have seen, especially when coupled with the auditory anomalies we all heard in the area the picture was taken. We had one unexplained personal experience that evening while investigating in the smaller theater area of the building. We were making general chit chat around the stage when Becky and I clearly heard what we could best describe as what it sounds like when a knife is ripping through fabric. We heard the noise for about 2-3 seconds and at the same time the theater curtains moved dramatically as if someone had pushed them. It really startled both of us as we both thought this was not paranormal event but a person or animal coming out from behind the theater curtains. Angela the third member of our team that night did not hear or see anything which was odd in and of itself as she was standing just a few feet from us. Within a few seconds I regained composure and quickly ran up the stage steps and behind the curtain where we heard the noise. There lay three 24x24x24 folded up card board boxes flat on the floor right behind the curtains. These boxes were not down on the floor earlier during our initial walk through. Logically the boxes sliding on the wood floor when they fell had to be the sound we heard, and the boxes falling would have also caused the curtain to move as the fall would have generated the airflow into the cutains. Although we tried to recreate the sound by dropping the boxes in many ways and we could not replicate the first sound we heard to our satisfaction. There were still 3 folded boxes leaning against the wall from where the other 3 had fallen. The boxes that remained upright were leaning at about 70 degrees and there was a large rolled up rug in front of the boxes so the boxes that fell could not have slid straight down and on to the floor. The boxes that fell would have had to fallen about 110+ degrees from the top. This is hard to explain considering how the remaining boxes were still standing at the same 70 degree angle. While I can certainly not label this event as 100% paranormal. I also can not explain this to my full satisfaction either. Overall this investigation was great and I would love to conduct another investigation at this locale in the future. I had what as I classify as my first personal experiance that really got my blood pumping and these rare events are why we stay up late in old buildings doing these investigations. So I would like to thank the building management for allowing us to have full reign of the entire building during this investigaion. At one point, Bryan, Kevin, and I witnessed shadow movement in the doorway of the room directly across from the bedroom we had set up in. It was during this time that an EVP was captured that seemed to say, "In here." However, due to one of the members of the household being in the basement with the television on and having a conversation, I must discount this recording. While in this room, Kevin experienced a lot of heat on his neck. When I checked this spot, there was a large, bright red patch reminiscent of a bug bite or even a slap. Two team members experienced a "cobweb"-like feeling across their faces, when there were no webs visible. I experienced temperature fluctuations, and some of these were evident on our equipment. One other thing of note: Many of us were extremely uncomfortable in the hallway, and felt followed or watched. This could have been due to the tension in the home, but it was a very palpable sense of unease. Kelli Patrick:Equipment used: cell sensor and digital camera I used the cell sensor in the "haunted" rooms at the beginning of the investigation to get a base reading of the rooms. Nothing abnormal found. Throughout the night, I attempted to use my digital camera and couldn't. My camera works in low light or darkness. I couldn't get a picture at all or see anything in the viewfinder. I didn't have any weird feelings or see anything, except for something that felt like a cobweb brush against the upper corner of my mouth a couple of times. Kevin had the same kind of thing against his eye across the room at a different time. Becky Ray:This investigation was not carried out under ideal circumstances. There was a lot of tension in the home, and it became clear quickly that one member of the household was not comfortable with us being there. I feel this compromised the investigation. However, a couple of our members did have some experiences we were not able to find an explanation for. Kevin Simpson:On this investigation I used a Nikon Coolpix 10 megapixel camera. Throughout the night I experienced shadows move across one of the doors in the opposite bedroom. Also at one point in the evening my neck started burning and when I turned on the light to check I was informed that my neck was bright red and looked like I had a bug bite or something. I dont know what that was but once I got home my neck was back to normal. I also had the feeling of a spiderweb touching my neck and face but found nothing. Not sure what to think about the residence. Nothing came up in my pictures. But when using Becky's thermometer in one of the bedrooms I noticed up to a 10 degree change on a single interior wall. I’d like to thank Tina and James for helping us investigate thespian Hall and making that investigation possible, We would also like to thank Laura from the Boonville Historical Society they were all very much appreciated! We met up with James and Tina at Thespian Hall. It was great to see them again! They also had two people joining them. They gave us a quick tour of the Hall and some history. We started on the top floor and did an EVP session and used a REM pod to see if we can get anything to trigger it. We did get any EVPs captured during this time and did not notice anything that made our Rem Pod go off. We then moved downstairs to the main seating area of the theater and we did individual EVP sessions and just observed the stage and noises of the theater. We did not note anything at this time, although Julie did report a personal experience of being touched. We then moved to the stage area of the theater and set up a green grid light. It was reported by some members that they were seeing some sort of shadow up there on the top balcony, so I then took my motion-activated toy, and also my motion detector and set it up on the seat where they were reporting the shadow. It did not go off at that time, but many people reported still seeing some sort of movement up there. I also saw some sort of movement, but cannot determine whether it was just the lighting going dim on the green grid, or if it was something else. James and Tina are reviewing the footage to see if they have captured anything, they also sent some possible EVPs that they are currently reviewing and we will post some to take a listen to as they become available. The EVPS we have posted, we have determined that they were not us, or anything else at the time that could be explained. We definitely look forward to going back and it was a great investigation! Laura from the Boonville Historical Society was very kind. A big thank you to her and also James and Tina for setting Thespian Hall up! Some EVPs are still under review, and we will post more soon as they become available. It was a great experience we look forward to going back! Location History For more than 160 years Thespian Hall has captured the vision, the imagination, and the essence of the community in which it was built. The roots of Thespian Hall go back to 1838 when a remarkable thing happened in the frontier town of Boonville. That year, sixty leading citizens founded an all-male dramatic group called “The Thespian Society”, which enjoyed wide community support that was unique in its day. By 1855, the Thespians were ready to build a permanent structure as “...a monument to the liberality and good taste of our citizens…”. It took two years to complete the four-story-high Greek revival building. The Odd Fellows, Masons, and City government occupied the second floor with its 18-foot ceiling. The Thespians, incorporated now as the Boonville Library, Reading Room, and Thespian Society used this first floor for their productions and the basement as their reading room. Thespian Hall opened July 3rd, 1857, with a grand ball, with dedication ceremonies held on Independence Day. Boonville’s home for the arts began its long life as a catalyst for community involvement and civic pride. During the Civil war, Thespian Hall filled many needs, from quartering the Federal Troops to serving as a hospital for soldiers. The unity created by the Thespian Society began to disintegrate and sometime during the War, the Society ceased to exist. The Hall’s ownership was transferred to J.L. Stephens, once a Society member and Boonville became known as the “best little theatre town in Missouri” as well-known performers from Eddie Foy to black pianist “Blind” Boone played the Hall. The Turn and Gesang Verein, one of the athletic and singing societies which flourished in the areas of heavy German settlement, was a major occupant of the building, sponsoring many of these events. By 1898, Thespian Hall had lost much of its charm and some debated “removing this historic building … ”. Owners Lon Vest Stephens (Governor of Missouri, 1897-1901) and his brother W. Speed Stephens decided to renovate the hall instead and, in 1901, opened it as the Stephens Opera House with a stage house added at the rear of the building. The main floor had been slanted, cutting into the former reading room, and an orchestra pit, box seats, and curved balcony completed the modernization. A new era began, with Boonville as a stopping point for many major touring companies, only to end in 1912, when the nickelodeon began the hall’s transition to a movie house. The second and most serious threat to the building occurred in 1937 when Fox Mid-West Theaters, owners of the building, announced plans to tear down Thespian Hall and replace it with a “modern movie palace.” Concerned local citizens, led by historian Charles van Ravenswaay, called a public meeting and formed the Thespian Hall Preservation Committee. This group mounted a state-wide preservation effort, one of the first of its kind in Missouri. This well-orchestrated campaign saved Thespian Hall and for the next 38 years, it continued as a movie theater. In 1975, the Friends of Historic Boonville acquired the theater as a gift from the Kemper Foundation of Kansas City. With the help of the Foundation and the community, the Friends have worked to restore the building, making Thespian Hall once again a home for the arts. The Hall, the oldest theater still in use west of the Alleghenies, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Because of the vision and the hard work of the Friends, not unlike the Thespian Society which built it, Thespian Hall is a historic building still making history. While we did not catch it on video, we did capture Jennifer's reaction on Sarah's recorder. Submitted by Sarah Strange Sound Garnett House Hotel 00:00 / 00:15 Jennifer, Lindsey, and Sarah all heard a strange sound upstairs. Submitted by Sarah LOCATION HISTORY The Garnett House was built in 1858 by D.W. Houston and was opened as a hotel by Hiram Tefft in the fall of that year. The building sits at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Walnut in Garnett, Kansas. The building was the first hotel in town and had several additions built onto the building. It was said that Mrs. Houston refused to move into the original structure due to its swaying in the breeze. The hotel became known as The Garnett House and the Lighthouse Hotel due to its bright lantern on the top floor, which could be seen for miles at that time. It is the only surviving antebellum structure in Garnett, Kansas. As a hotel, the building has witnessed and participated in many events in its 160-year history. During the time known as “Bleeding Kansas,” it is said that the famous Abolitionist John Brown hid escaped enslaved people in the attic of their home. This is said to have happened around 1859, just before the American Civil War. During the 1870s, the town of Garnett became a crossroads of cowboys; settlers headed West and citizens. It became the scene out of the Old West with saloons, brothels, and gunfights in the streets. During this time, the hotel hosted some of its most famous guests. The guest list includes famous lawmen Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Wild Bill Hickock. It also contains renowned scout Buffalo Bill Cody who was traveling with Hickock at the time. Belle Starr, the favorite female cowboy shooter, was also a hotel guest. The famous outlaw Jesse James was rumored to have stayed here under one of his many aliases. After this time, the hotel became a more prominent private residence, and modern hotels began to appear in the town of Garnett. In the early 1950s, the building became the Doctor’s Office of Dr. Robert Stevens and his wife, Dr. Julius-Stevens. They treated patients in the old hotel up until the 21st Century. Investigator's Notes Jennifer, Lead Investigator: On this investigation we started off with reviewing a video tour given by Rob, who is always a great host! The equipment used were cameras, audio recorders, a red grid light, motion activated equipment, white noise generator and a rem-pod. ( Both used for an experiment to see how easily they influenced each other. Rem pods do not detect paranormal activity and are extremely sensitive to outside stimuli) Overall this investigation seemed pretty quiet. We did have one strange occurrence of a doll falling out of a chair ( which is often reported) of which Sarah caught my reaction on her audio. Unfortunately we did not get footage of the doll falling, only the reaction. We could not seem to figure out what caused this as we were walking all around that same area the majority of the night with no occurrence of the doll falling. We did try to recreate different ways of how it could fall and were not successful. It important to note that just because the doll fell does not prove it was paranormal. We also split up into groups throughout the night and investigated as a a full group and in partners. We set up a grid to see if we could determine any shadows. We did not see any that night. We did spot only natural fluctuation in the grid with small dust particles. We also did not catch any for certain EVPS, as there were many people down the street creating noise, which caused any recording of ours to be possibly contaminated with noises from them. We did have two investigators report the feeling of getting touched both while investigating upstairs and downstairs. I noted that down for documentation purposes as well. Rob is always a generous host and we thank him for allowing us out! Some things may be still under review and we will post any updated findings. Previous Investigations at this Location: 1858 Garnett House Hotel - Garnett, Kansas

At some time in the past it was converted into three separate apartments. It is now being renovated back into its original status. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:I used my digital camera for the night of the investigation but it seems that I got really nothing with the pictures I took. I'll post some of the pictures that may be something to look at. I didn't really hear as much as everyone else did but I definitly could smell things and felt cool breezes when everyone else around me is feeling much warmer from being up in the attic for a moment. The house it's self is old and you definitly can tell the house has character and history within it's self. The house has 3 levels counting the basement and if you count the attic 4. During the walk thru kind of felt like a maze with all the doors and turns. When there done remodeling the house will be amazing. As we finished up our walk-thru and heading down the main staircase I asked the owner if she was using incenses or those plug-ins in the house as I smelled a floral scent as we went downstairs and she mentioned no. I kind of disregarded it and continue on into the living room with everyone else. Everyone was taking some what of a break and bathroom break when Bryan mention the water in the sink incident. After that moment the house felt very active and we all started to notice things. I noticed hearing what sounded like an instrument playing in the future formal dining room, we previously checked this room and no where in that room is an instrument or radio, the owner did mention at this time that she and her husband occasionaly hear instruments playing in there also. I also witness with the rest of the gang the smell of facial powder lingering near the steps at the side near the bathroom going into the dining room. No one had put on any make-up or put on any form of powder or floral scent on. When sitting in the back bedroom with Bryan and Becky on the bed I felt someone staring at me on my right side. Becky was behind me and Bryan was to the left of me. I disregarded it as it did not feel threatening nor did it attempt to do anything. As we left the room Becky was startled by the door opening from the attic as I walked out. The door was shut but not locked. She mentioned it looked like someone was walking out of the door toward me. Also within that same room the closet door was shut in the 1st visit and in the walk-thru, the 2nd visit the door was slightly open. We also sat in the 2nd bedroom this room houses 2 kids again i sat on the bed next to Bryan again and Becky was sitting across from us on the next bed. We were all chit-chatting and making comments about the house and such. Thru-out the whole time I could hear Bryan's stomach growling like he was hungry but I knew they just ate pizza with in the last 2 hours so his stomach should growl that much. I eventually mentioned to him about his stomach when he made the same comments to me. We both realized if it's not both of us then what was that. The owner did mention at times the kids in that room will go and sleep in another room but she hasn't asked exactly what makes them do this out of not wanting to scare them or make them fearful of the room. Later in the night Becky and Severn sat on the bed but did not hear the same sounds. After about 1030-11pm the house seemed to quiet down to a dead silence. No more sounds nothing. Becky and I sat in the 2nd bedroom till midnight and nothing occured thru-out the time. All in all the house is going to be really beautiful once fixed up I did not feel or see anything that alarmed me really or made me feel that what was there threatening or wanting to harm anyone. I've posted some pictures Sevren Jacobs:I used a Fujifilm 35mm color disposable camera (with flash) and my Olympus digital voice recorder as my equipment of choice for the evening. I have yet to develop my film from the night but will be sure to post any questionable pictures that I come across! So far my audio review has been fairly uneventful but I still have more to finish up from when I was sitting in the attic with Brian towards the end of the night. Having arrived at the location an hour or two after the initial walkthrough had been conducted I may have missed out on some of the activity that took place prior. Things did seem fairly quiet throught the home during my stay. I was given a tour of the residence and informed of the night's activities upon arrival and then proceeded to visit the children's bedrooms where activity had been reported in the past and took some audio footage as well as spending some time in the home's attic with Brian and took a few pictures as well as more audio. I experienced a few temperature changes in the attic as well as a few minor noises which could be contributed by the age of the residence. Based on incidences that have been reported in the home as well as some of the events that transpired prior to my arrival, I am definently very eager to conduct a follow up investigation in this residence. Bryan Kaplan:main experience took place as everyone was on the top floor of the home and we all heard someone walking around downstairs...that's about all I experienced. Kelli Patrick:Equipment used: Cell sensor detector, Nightshot video camera and laser thermometer. During the walk thru, we would hear noises like someone was walking around. If we were upstairs, the sounds would be downstairs and vice versa or the sound would be coming from the next room. There were several events (around 8) that happened within about 15 minutes. I didn't see anything or feel anything strange, just the noises. After the walk thru, I stayed at the base and documented the happenings. Miranda and I didn't have anything happen while we were there. Nothing abnormal/paranormal caught on film. The Cellsensor and thermometer registered normal. Becky Ray:When we arrived at the home and did our official first walk-through as we approached the front stairway I distinctly heard what sounded like someone moving about downstairs. When I called out down the stairs (not everyone had arrived yet, so I thought that maybe it was one of the other investigators arriving) I got no answer. Everyone present at that time heard it as well. I immediately went down the stairs and we checked the lower level but there was no one there. As soon as the last person came downstairs, we started hearing the same types of noises coming from the upstairs area. Again, no one was up there. About ten minutes after this incident, we heard what sounded like someone going up the stairs. Again, on inspection no one was there. I placed my video camera on the staircase and am reviewing my video. It was shortly after this that Bryan called everyone over to the side of the stairway where he was smelling a "floral" type scent that reminded me of pancake stage makeup, or perhaps a strong body powder. Also, during our first visit to the basement area I had left my flashlight upstairs so I could not go into a section of it that had been used in the past for storing jarred foods. As I was standing near the entryway to this area I commented that I smelled sulfur. Almost immediately after I said this my camera took a photo. My hand was nowhere near the release and was in clear view of everyone present. The really odd thing about it is that I had it set on auto-flash, but the flash didn't fire. I'm very curious to see if this photo comes out. **NOTE** I believe the sulfur type odor was coming from the central air unit. When we returned a second time I did not smell this odor, but when we went back a third I did, and the common factor was that the unit was running. On our second group visit to the attic nothing out of the ordinary happened until we were leaving the attic space. As I was standing on the narrow stairs talking about a drawing one of the former homeowners had done on the wall I felt something lightly tap on my left shoulder. I looked at both people around me and asked them about it, but they both said they were just standing still. Overall, this was a much more eventful night than I was anticipating, and am looking forward to our follow-up! Miranda Stark:This house belongs to my husband and myself. It is an 1888 Victorian, in the historical district of Independence. We moved our family here this past winter, and have been working hard to restore it's classic charm and beauty. In a home of this old age, it is generally presumed that it may harbor a ghost or two. I have had my personal curiosities about this, my husband has also, though not so much as myself. Being a paranormal investigator, of course I was initially drawn to the potential for "activity", as my husband is more focused on the physical work at hand. We would never want our children to fear their home, or have frightening experiences where they are supposed to feel comfort. So far I've heard very little from them in regards to trouble sleeping, or having encounters with anything worrisome. My husband has been here, on occasion, alone, while the children, and I have been away. He has a handful of stories to tell involving unexplainable occurrances such as objects being moved and misplaced, something tugging on his shirt collar while he was busy painting, witnessing a white misty-like cloud hovering near the ceiling, sounds of shuffling around in other parts of the house, doors opening, and so-on. I have personally had some "odd" things happen to me while here, but never anything that keeps me awake at night. We thought it would be interesting to have an investigation here at our house, just to see if anything may by chance turn up. I, myself, did not do much of my own investigating, since I was host to the group that evening. Bryan did, at one point in the evening, report that the attic door across the hall from my oldest son's room, came open on it's own volition, which he found strange. Upon mentioning this incident to my husband, he looked at me in a surprised way, and remarked that this very thing has happened to him many times. He would apparently close the door after leaving the attic, and return later to it standing wide open. The part of the house where this door is located (at the bottom of the attic staircase) was once used as the "servant quarters" in the home. The servant(s) would have had easy access to the attic here, and occupied this area of the house more than anyone else at that time. The house was broken up into three apartments at one time and this area of the house was also used as it's own apartment as well. We are uncertain of any deaths occurring in the house, though in the 1800's most people died in their own homes, so it is likely that this has been the case at least once or more. There is still evidence from the investigation being analysed at this time, but to date nothing incredibly noteworthy has surfaced. I will update when more is known. EVPS Unknown - 09:47 PM - 21st April, 2006 - Private Residence - Independence, MO 00:00 / 00:00 I'm not certain what this one is saying. You will hear one of the investigators cough, and some faint voices in the background as well as the mechanical noise from the rocker the homeowner's baby was in. But there is a loud voice speaking in a sing-song manner closer to where the camera's microphone is. Submitted by Becky Child's Voice? - 09:50 PM - 21st April, 2006 - Private Residence - Independence, MO 00:00 / 00:00 This one was recorded shortly after the previous one. You will hear the home owner talking to one of the investigators about some of the things that have happened in the home as well as the mechanical noise from the rocker. Shortly after she begins talking there is another voice that seems to talk over her. To me this sounds like a child's voice. Shortly after this Bryan comments that he hears a voice, and then comments that it sounds like a child's voice. After the original clip plays, I have the section of the voice enhanced, and then the section where Bryan comments. Submitted by Angela Becky - 11:17 PM Becky and I sitting in the kids room, the room was very quiet and still, no activity in the house. It seemed to get quiet from 11pm -12am.
