URBAN LEGENDS KENTUCKY - Waverly Hills Sanatorium by: Becky Ray in 2004 HISTORY Louisville, Kentucky, began its life as a city in May of 1778. At this time, the land was still part of the colony of Virginia, and it was Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson who signed the first Louisville town charter in 1780. Kentucky achieved statehood in 1792 when it became the first western star on the American Flag. Named for King Louis XVI of France in gratitude for French aid in the Revolution, Louisville grew slowly at first. It wasn't until 1828 when the population reached 10,000 that it got around to its official incorporation as a city. When the twentieth century began, Louisville's population had passed the 200,000 mark, a doubling in a single generation. In 1900, Louisville was still among the nation's twenty largest cities, twice as large as Los Angeles and Atlanta, and four times bigger than Dallas or Houston. ​ Although the Ohio River that the city sits on was a necessity for the growth of the city, it also was a source of problems. Louisville suffered through floods, malarial-type infections, and the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812. Unfortunately, this also made it ripe for the tuberculosis bacteria. This bacterium can attack any part of the body, but most usually attacks the lungs. During the first part of the Twentieth Century, it was the leading cause of death in the United States, and in 1900 Louisville, Kentucky had the highest death rate from tuberculosis in the country. ​ It seems that tuberculosis or TB (also known as Consumption) has always been with the human race. Evidence of TB has been found in the spines of Egyptian mummies and it is known that the disease was common in both ancient Greece and Imperial Rome. During some periods of history TB may have lessened its grip but it never entirely let go. For centuries health practitioners were unable to help patients afflicted with tuberculosis. Physicians in Rome recommended bathing in human urine, eating wolf livers, and drinking elephant blood. Many treatment regimens included fresh milk: human, goat, or camel. It was realized as far back as the 16th century that the disease was contagious, but besides blood letting of the patients or seeking an audience with the king to have him lay on healing hands, there was not much hope for sufferers. Over the years the treatments would change and could vary from country to country. Patients were told to rest or to exercise, to eat or to abstain from food, to travel to the mountains or to live underground. During all of this, TB claimed victims by the millions. At the end of the 19th century, Robert Koch found the microorganism Mycobacterium Tuberculosis was responsible for the disease, and this gave him a substantial enemy to fight. However, it would still be several decades before a cure was found. ​ Construction of what now stands as Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky began March of 1924. At the time, this was considered to be one of the most modern tuberculosis facilities in existence. In October of 1926 the sanatorium opened for patients featuring four stories of patient rooms, a cafeteria and kitchen, an operating room, and plenty of solarium porch space on each floor for the patients. On the fifth floor was the heliotherapy department where those suffering from tuberculosis of the bone would be treated with sunlight. There was also a roof top swing set for the children, a nurse's station, a kitchenette, and access to the elevator maintenance in what is now known as the "bell tower." Due to the continuing efforts of several scientists working around the world, Selman A. Waksman finally found an antibiotic in 1943. Streptomycin purified from Streptomyces griseus was first administered to a human on November 20, 1944 with remarkable results. Not only did the disease immediately stop its progression, but the bacteria also disappeared from the patient's sputum and he recovered fully. Due to this antibiotic, by the mid 1950s tuberculosis had been virtually wiped out from the Louisville area, and in 1961 Waverly Hills Sanatorium closed its doors as a tuberculosis hospital. ​ The building didn't stay closed long, however, as in 1962, the building was reopened as Woodhaven Geriatric Sanitarium. Finding specific information about Woodhaven has proven difficult, but numerous stories circulate about patient mistreatment including squalid conditions, bedsores, exposure, electroshock therapy and other unusual experiments. Some may be folklore, but some must be true as on July 25, 1980, Woodhaven was court ordered to close do to improper patient care. (Some sources site this date as in 1982) ​ This time, the building stayed closed. Everything was auctioned off and the doors were locked for good. ​ Amazingly from this time until the late 1990s, the main building remained virtually as it was, with some minor wear from time. However, in 1996, Waverly and the surrounding property were bought by a local Louisville man who had ideas all his own. In 1998, this owner began plans to demolish the building and erect a 150-foot tall statue of Jesus Christ and an adjoining Christian meditation center. After successfully demolishing all the buildings except the main hospital and the laundry room, he was stopped by an injunction because the building is on the National Historic Register's endangered list. Not one to let a little setback stop him, the owner went to plan B: let the building decay and get it condemned. He opened the building up to vandals; letting them smash out windows, porcelain toilets and sinks, and basically destroy anything they could get their hands on. Walls became covered in graffiti, doors were torn from their hinges, radiators were ripped out, and you name it. Rumor has it that he also fired his employees and refused to pay them, telling them to take what they could from the building for their final pay, forcing them to steal brass and marble. This wasn't enough, though. He next began digging around the foundation of the building to try to make the foundation crack. He dug as deep as 30 feet, but this building is solid concrete and is fire proof, so it isn't going anywhere, fortunately. Evidence of his digging can still be seen today. ​ HAUNTINGS ​ It was during this time that accounts of strange activities at Waverly started circulating through the city. Rumors of "satanic rituals" taking place within the walls of the building were whispered, but what I feel was really happening was closer to vagrants moving in and locals visiting for drug deals. But other stories started surfacing as well. Waverly began to get a reputation as actively haunted. Many trespassers shared similar stories of phantom children playing hide and seek, doors slamming, disembodied voices, lights coming on when there was no power to the building, and some even witnessed a hearse drive up and drop off coffins. ​ Halloween weekend, 1999, the owner held "The Awakening of Waverly Manor." He reopened the lobby and the first floor east wing for tours, a Halloween party, and a concert with local bands. ​ Stories of ghosts at Waverly continued to surface, and amazingly, most of them are akin to what others have experienced. Many have seen a little boy playing with his ball on the third floor, many people have witnessed "shadow people," and there has been a report of a woman running from the building with chains on bleeding from the wrists shrieking, "Help me! Somebody save me!" ​ By 2001, this owner had given up and decided to sell the 29-acre property to the present owners. Thankfully, these owners are dedicated to restoring Waverly to its splendor, and have already made amazing headway! ​ In July of 2001, Triage Entertainment, the production company behind Fox television's "Scariest Places on Earth," decided to film an episode at Waverly and the Louisville Ghost Hunters Society was asked to participate as historians and guides. ​ Although some of the moments on the show are "done up" for television, not all of it is, and it is worth watching if you have a chance! ​ Starting in October of 2001, and every year since, the current owners have had a Haunted Hospital attraction to raise money for the restoration of the building. ​ There have been a few private investigations at Waverly with comparable findings such as apparitions, pin lights, shadow people, "glittering" lights, cold spots, footsteps, doors closing or the sounds of doors closing, food odors, and electronic voice phenomena including some researchers claiming to have been told to "get out." Others have reported objects falling on them, or unknown presences touching, pushing, or tripping them. ​ Room 502 seems to have taken on a life all its own through the years. Depending on whom you get your story from, the legends vary greatly, so I'll tell you a few, then tell you what my research shows. Although it was told in tours for years that Room 502 was a nurses station, it was actually a patient's bathroom. Legend has it that it was the scene of two suicides by nurses. One allegedly hanged herself in 1928, while the other jumped out of the room's window at an unknown time. This legend states that the mentally ill patients were kept on the fifth floor and these patients had to go to a half door at the nurses' stations to get their food and medicine or to use the restroom that was adjacent to the nurses' station. When the nurse hanged herself, these patients had to continue to walk around her hanging body to use the restroom until the next nurse showed up for duty. Allegedly, the nurse was 29, unmarried, and pregnant. As to why the second nurse killed herself, I've never heard, nor could I find any record of it. ​ It is now known that there were never mental patients kept at Waverly Hills, let alone on the fifth floor. During the first years of the building the fifth floor was used for the children, but after that it was mostly occupied by ambulatory patients who were close to going home. ​ After years of this story being told, the legend changed from the suicide happening in room 502, and moved to the foyer area directly outside of the room. Even this legend has flaws as it is now known that the pipe the nurse allegedly hanged herself from wasn't even installed in the building until the 1970s when the building was Woodhaven Geriatric Sanitarium One of the more odd occurrences at Waverly is the bizarre functioning of equipment, especially electromagnetic meters (EMF meters). Realistically, these meters should not even sound unless something magnetic has been encountered, and since Waverly has had no power to the building since the mid 1980's when the poles were knocked down and the wires removed, these meters should remain quiet while in the main building at Waverly. Paranormal investigators and ghost hunters also use EMF meters as a form of "ghost detector" as a widely held theory that ghosts or spirits are a form of energy that disrupts the natural electromagnetic fields when they are present. These meters pick up on this disturbance, and though it is not 100%, it is a good indicator that something may be present. If I could digress a bit, another group that has been doing some research at Waverly has conducted experiments on the shadow people and have proven that they have mass. These anomalies trigger motion detectors! This is just another step in proving the energy theory since it is known that energy is mass. Back to the EMF meters and other equipment, these electrical disturbances in Waverly have been reported to drain generators, melt equipment from the inside, and short out mobile phones. ​ In 2004, the movie "Death Tunnel" was filmed on location at Waverly. It is said it is based on local lore, legends, and history. I have not seen the film, but considering the main characters are five sorority girls, I have a feeling it is going to follow a bit of the typical horror film formula. This film is set for release some time in 2005. At the time of filming "Death Tunnel," the filmmakers also made a documentary about Waverly Hills called "Spooked." Information about both of these can be found here: http://www.deathtunnel.com ​ THE BUILDING ​ Waverly Hills is private property, and trespassing is against the law. There are security guards on site 24 hours a day, and the owners live on the property as well. Do not trespass, don't even think about it. If you wish to visit Waverly, contact the Louisville Ghost Hunters Society for their next available tour. ​ To look at the outside of the building, the only damage you can see is the missing windows. Almost every window is missing from the building. Only on the Morgue wing have windows been replaced, this is the area currently being used as the security outpost. ​ Built in the "boomerang" or "batwing" style to keep the wind moving through the solarium, Waverly is uniquely shaped, with just the morgue wing coming out to what was known as the "body chute." I'll get into that more in a bit. ​ Still located on the first floor of the building is the lobby, solarium and patient rooms, offices, medical labs, x-ray and dark room, a nurses station, a salon/barber shop, a dentist office, a library, the breaker and transformer rooms, cold rooms for meat and other food storage, an old electric/stone/water potato peeler (many believe it to be a meat grinder, its not), maintenance offices with a light indication system to let workers know if a cooler or transformer went out and needed repair, the north wing morgue. ​ On the second floor north wing is the kitchen area. This kitchen had the capacity and equipment to feed 500 people and a ventilation system that could completely change the air temperature every three minutes. Also on this wing were the bakery and the dining rooms. Serving 2,100 meals daily, the main cafeteria had the capacity to seat 328 employees and/or patients at one sitting and could be expanded to seat 448. One minor surgery/treatment room was located on the second floor as were a chapel, solarium and patient rooms, one kitchenette, one dinette, and two nurses stations. ​ Occupational therapy was held on the third floor, but otherwise it was basically the same as the others with one minor surgery/treatment room, solarium and patient rooms, one kitchenette, one dinette, and two nurses stations. ​ On the fourth floor, which many report to be the most haunted, were major surgery and the recovery rooms. Also located here was a waiting room, one minor surgery/treatment room, solarium and patient rooms, one kitchenette, one dinette, and two nurses stations. ​ What is referred to as the fifth floor is really just a few offices and some rooftop space. It was reserved for the heliotherapy department that treated TB of the bone with sunlight. Children with this disease had a swing set to play on while they received treatment. In these offices there was a very small nurses station and a kitchenette. ​ In the basement of the building there are elevator maintenance, access for the laundry building, crawl spaces for pipe maintenance, and an unidentified room containing a fire door. ​ THE BODY CHUTE ​ What is now called the "body chute" is a tunnel that leads from the hospital to the railroad tracks at the bottom of the hill. Originally, this was built as nothing more than an underground tunnel to ship coal and food/produce up the hill to the hospital more efficiently. However, as the deaths continued to rise, the staff thought of another use. One side of the tunnel is concrete steps, while the other side consisted of a motorized rail and cable system. Eventually, this is where the bodies of the dead would be placed on gurney tables and lowered to the bottom of the tunnel where hearses would picked them up for funeral arrangements. This tunnel was totally enclosed from the morgue wing of the hospital insuring that the patients would not see how many bodies were leaving the hospital to keep up their morale. Doctors discovered early that mental health in patients is just as important as physical health. ​ This tunnel is approximately 500 feet long, and has air vents every few feet to let in light and fresh air. It has been said that the tunnel was large enough to hold all the patients and staff as a bomb shelter during both World Wars if needed. ​ MY EXPERIENCE ​ Wow, where to start? I went to the 2004 Mid-South Paranormal Convention with fellow PAI member Kelli Patrick on September 25, 2004 for the overnight investigation at the Waverly Sanatorium. ​ Our investigation started around 10pm in the cafeteria on the second floor. We'd recently been split into our groups, and were listening to Dale Kaczmarek speak on ghost photography when several of us suddenly felt extremely cold. I commented that my backpack felt like ice, and we all began looking for a source of a breeze, but could find none. The leaves on the trees outside were still. A few minutes later, the same feeling of cold came over us again, and again we were looking about for a source of this chill but found nothing. As we were looking, four of us happened to be looking towards the hallway windows and doors as a blond woman in a gown holding something over her mouth passed in front of one of the windows. She appeared to have a glowing effect to her, but what threw me the most was that she only passed in front of ONE of the windows, not the doors, or any of the other windows. All of us immediately commented, "Did you see that?" and one of our group ran to the hallway to find her, but there was no one there. My adrenaline was up! It was going to be a great night! None of us had our cameras at the ready, it happened so fast, but it was the kind of thing that I don't need to prove to anyone. I know what I saw. ​ When Dale was finished with his presentation, the official investigation started and our group went to the "body chute" first. It is an interesting place, not at all what I expected from what I'd been told or read. It is almost a peaceful place. While we were in there, we heard what sounded like the gate being slammed behind us several times, but when we'd check on it, the gate was always open just as we'd left it. At one point, we heard several voices talking right outside the gate, but when we went to explore, no one was there. ​ Next, we went to the Courtyard area. While we were there, this area had been decorated with fake tombstones and a coffin for the annual haunted house, so it seemed kind of silly to me, but I definitely had the feeling someone was watching from the third and fourth floor windows, but I never saw anyone there. Another member of our group took several photos, and a curtain was moved in one of them. We are still waiting to see if this was a person or not. ​ Then we returned to the second floor. Wow. With all the other people gone, and our lights shut off, the shadow people are clearly visible. I know what you may be thinking… but seriously. It's not like one or two; these "people" are everywhere in this building. They are like shadows that pass up and down the hallways, in and out of doorways, look out of windows, and it is just like someone is there. They actually move and break the moonlight. I'd never seen anything like it. At one point, they were literally all around us. I also witnessed pinpoints of light, and what I'll call "sparklers" for lack of a better term. I'd never seen anything like either of those before either. The "sparklers" were like bursts of glitter being tossed in the air with amazing light on them. I saw things like this on both the third and fourth floors as well. Also on the third and fourth floors we heard footsteps coming towards us when no one was there, and doors slamming. ​ Our group got several amazing photos from the third floor that I will be posting in our photos section, so be sure to check there! One of the group members reported feeling a tug on her shirt as we exited the nursery the first time. This was shortly after she had moved the stuffed animals that were placed on the floor. I was looking right at her at the time and didn't see anything that could have caught her shirt. The strangest thing to happen was what sounded like someone trying to push in the front door while we were all upstairs. I went to the bottom of the stairs and heard the sound again as I stood next to the door. I immediately turned on the porch light and looked outside. There was a man, but he was in front of the house next door on the sidewalk, when he saw me look outside he did approach the house and knock on the door to ask about joining us. It may have been him at the door, but he seemed very polite and would have had to move quickly to get from the door to the sidewalk where I saw him in the time available. I'm looking forward to returning to this location in the next few weeks. ​ Question: When did the phenomena start? Answer: First reports were in the early 1990s, however it is possible activity was happening earlier and not discussed. Question: Any cold spots? Answer: Cold spots have been reported various places in the home, specifically in the kitchen area. Question: Any physical attacks? Answer: The family that lived in the home in the early 1990s reported numerous attacks of scratches appearing on the husband. Question: How far back can you trace the history of the property? Answer: The home was built around the turn of the century and most owners have been verified via property records. Question: Have there been any deaths or violent occurances in the the property? URBAN LEGENDS MISSOURI - Alexander Majors Mansion by: Kelli Patrick Alexander Majors helped run one of the biggest freight companies from Kansas City. The freighting business brought supplies to settlements all around the Kansas City area. Majors also created the Pony Express and gave a job to a 12 year-old boy known as "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Alexander Majors built his Kansas City home in 1856. The mansion is reported to be haunted by a lady named Louisa Johnston. She spent most of her life restoring the mansion. She died in the caretaker's cottage at the age of eighty-nine. She is reported to stare out one of the first floor windows and sometimes can be seen walking up the sidewalk to the home. Alexander Majors Mansion 8140 State Line Rd. Kansas City, Missouri Alexander Majors is buried in Union Hill Cemetery (downtown Kansas City).

During the “Red Room tour,” Lindsey reported feeling anxious and nauseous in this room and stated it felt difficult to breathe. Also, during this tour, Lindsey reported feeling very sad in the “Blue Room.” The "Blue Room" is at the end of the hallway on the men's wing, and the "Red Room" is at the end of the hallway on the women's wing. After the tour ended, we participated in Becky's “Fear Experiment,” which involves watching a video to heighten our senses of fear. The hypothesis is that the feeling of anxiety may affect what one experiences during investigations. After watching the video, Lindsey and I set up cameras on the second floor in the “Blue Room” and “Red Room,” while Becky watched the monitor for her wireless quad cameras and gave us directions on where to move them for the best angles. We also set up cameras on objects in the two rooms to see if they would move independently. On the first floor, I set up my motion-activated camera in Room 106 to focus on toys in the room that have been reported to move. I also placed another motion-activated camera in the first-floor hallway. Lindsey and I then set up cameras in the dining room in the basement and in the hallway that connects the dining room to the kitchen. "As they were setting up the cameras, I was alone in the office where we had set up our base. I heard a noise in the hallway and turned, expecting to see one of them returning for something, but what I saw appeared to be a young girl running down the hallway. It happened so quickly that I cannot be sure what I saw. I know what it looked like. "Less than an hour later, while in the same area, I opened a bottle of soda which made the usual 'pshh' sound. I then heard a voice from the hallway imitate the sound of the bottle opening, but no one was there." - Becky. At this time, I did a solo investigation while Becky and Lindsey observed on the monitor. While on the first floor, I heard something being dragged near me in Room 105, but my recorder did not pick up any sounds. Then I went to the second floor. In the “Blue Room,” I had a sense of someone standing directly behind me. I did not get any EVPs while in that room. However, I did get something on audio while in a different room on the second floor. During my time in Room 200, the radio on my phone randomly turned on, which was strange. Next, I went to the basement, where I concentrated on the dining room and the hallway that leads to the kitchen area. I also spent some time in the padded room and boiler room. Following this, I met up with Becky and Lindsey to review the night so far. "While Jennifer was doing her solo investigation Lindsey and I were watching the monitors, and Camera One, which was set up in the 'Red Room,' kept glitching and losing the connection, but it always came back up. Before Jennifer headed into the basement where Camera Four was set up, it suddenly lost its connection and did not come back up. AfterJennifer finished investigating in the basement, she went back down and plugged Camera Four into a different power outlet which seemed to resolve the issue. However, as she left the basement, Lindsey and I saw several anomalies on the monitors for Camera Three and Camera Four behind her." - Becky. Becky and Lindsey, who had been watching some strangeness on the monitors, preferred to investigate together rather than alone. They started on the second floor. While in the “Red Room,” they felt a heaviness as if someone was in the room who didn't want them there. Becky stated, "If you want us to leave, knock on the wall." We will upload the recorded response to the site soon. While in the "Blue Room," Becky reported seeing what looked like a large shadow rising behind the chairs, but when she would shine her flashlight on the area, nothing was there. After moving closer to where Lindsey was standing, Becky no longer saw this shadow, but both Becky and Lindsey saw a movement in the corner of the room. However, it was decided by both of them that this movement was an optical illusion caused by the room's curtains. TIMES OF INTEREST: 9:05 PM: During set up, Becky reported seeing a white form of a child in the first-floor hallway. 9:23 PM: Becky reported hearing someone imitate the sound her soda bottle made when she opened it. ” after she opened a bottle of soda. 10:51 PM: Jennifer heard something being drug down the hallway of the first floor. 11:03 PM: Lindsey reported feeling something tug on her pant leg and that it felt like something was drawing on her leg. 11:21 PM: Jennifer’s radio turned on randomly while on the second floor. 11:30 -11:38 PM Becky and Lindsey both reported hearing noises in the hallway. 12:00 AM Both Becky and Lindsey heard what sounded like something being thrown at them in response to Becky’s statement. During this time, both Becky and Lindsey reported not feeling wanted in the room at all. 12:06 AM Jennifer saw a black mass shadow in the dining room before Lindsey entered. 12:11 AM: Becky started to walk down the hallway in the basement and heard what sounded like someone shaking a set of keys aggressively in front of her. 1:12 AM Lindsey reported her leg being touched again. Once we were all together again, we attempted a live EVP session while Becky listened live through Air Pods, and Lindsey and I asked questions. I did not hear anything on my audio that correlated with what Becky was hearing. Becky reported hearing a radio being played near the right-wing of the first floor and a humming sound like an airplane, but we did not find anything flying overhead at that time. Interestingly, during the investigation, cameras randomly shut off, and two of the wireless cameras fluctuated at random times, and sometimes some would fluctuate together. Becky and Lindsey both reported seeing a black mass on the camera in the basement that disturbed them and other things. I also saw a black mass while viewing the two in the basement, but we could not find a logical explanation for this. When Becky reviewed the quad-camera footage recorded during the night, she discovered that while she had the appropriate amount of time recorded, the only thing on the video was colored static. Some other footage and audio are still under review. Overall, an interesting investigation! We look forward to going back! Many thanks to Cindy for allowing us to come out. ​ LOCATION HISTORY The town of Edinburgh was originally the county seat of Jones County. In June 1840, the land located at section 36 in Wayne Township was originally deeded for courthouse purposes with the grant being signed by President Buchanan. Shortly after this grant, the county seat was changed from Edinburgh and the commissioners kept the grant for the establishment of the County Poor Farm. Described as a "comfortable retreat for the lazy, able-bodied and willingly dependent applicants," the Poor Farm housed the poor, incurably insane, and disabled. Tenants were given shelter and food for their labor. They would farm agriculture and livestock. The poor farm was in operation from 1850 to 1910 and during that time there were over 150+ documented deaths on the property. In 1910, the poor farm closed down and was demolished. Edinburgh Manor was then constructed from 1910 to 1911 to house the incurably insane, the poor, and the elderly. Edinburgh Manor, also referred to as The Manor, was in operation until November 2010. Medical documents and personal belongings can still be found in The Manor. When the last patients and employees left the building in 2010, they never returned. Other times it sounds like voices talking in another room. ​ Investigators Notes ​ Bryan Kaplan:Interesting place ... the only eerie feeling I had was in the basement area where it looked like 2 marble showers existed at some point. I didn't have anything on my recorders. Hugh McLenaghan:There was only one thing that happened to me on this investigation. After being upstairs for quite a while with no activity, Becky's meter suddenly picked up high levels of electromagnetic readings at the exact same time I felt a strong pain in my back around the broken pallet lift. This stayed for about 5 minutes before going away. The EMF readings then dropped a little, but still stayed on the high side. Kelli Patrick:Equipment used: Nightshot video camera, Cell Sensor, thermometer, regular camera. No abnormal findings w/ equipment, except on video. About 30-40 minutes into the film, the lights in the warehouse were turned off. There is a snapping sound and feet shuffling off camera. This lasted approx. 30 minutes. No one was in the room at the time. We were all upstairs and couldn't be heard. A test was done to see if it was the lights making the popping, snapping noises, but it didn't happen. It is unexplained. No anomalies on regular camera film. Becky Ray:While we were upstairs, my Electromagnetic Frequency Meter went off at various times in the area that we were told an apparition of a man had been seen in. What struck me as odd about this was that it was not consistent in going off. Most of the time it did not, but when it did, it was a medium to strong signal. One photo I took of this area has an odd anomaly in it over Bryan's head. It appears to be something bright and reflective. I have another photo I took of that same area that shows nothing there that is reflective. Also during our investigation, after being upstairs for quite a while with no activity, my meter suddenly picked up high levels of electromagnetic readings at the exact same time Hugh felt a pain in his back around the broken pallet lift. This then remained at high readings for the remainder of the night. This could mean that either something suddenly became active, or perhaps something was blocking my meter from getting a reading from the pallet lift, and then whatever was blocking it left. We started with a tour on this investigation and then broke up into two separate groups with three people choosing to participate in a “Fear Experiment.” We also created another experiment in “Petey’s Room,” We set up a plasma ball and EM Pump to put more electromagnetic and static energy in the air to see if it made any difference in the activity. Our equipment consisted of video and audio recorders, grid lights, flashlights, EM pumps, and cameras. Personal Experiences: Edward: 12:05 AM - Reported a shadow movement in the theater he could not explain. 12:25 AM - Reported feeling very drained after the “Fear Experiment.” Sarah: 1:35 AM - Reported seeing a pale-faced man with a beard in the tunnel. And later on in the theater, she reported that her head was hurting, and then afterward, in “Petey’s Room,” she reported something tickling her right arm. Tina: Although Tina did not have a lot of personal experiences, she did capture a photo of interest in the cell area in the gargoyle room and many EVPS. This includes an audible whistle we all heard while in the cell area of the castle. Tania: 10:00 PM - Reported hairs standing on end during the tour. 10:15 PM - Reported seeing a white ball of light near the gargoyle. 12:27 AM - Reported feeling nauseous in the theater. 2:05 AM - Reported feeling nauseous in the “interrogation room.” Neshela: 12:44 AM - Had an issue with recording apps opening and closing randomly During the “Fear Experiment,” she reported that the sounds on the video made her feel edgy, but she became less anxious as the video went on. 1:46 AM - Reported becoming emotional and physically ill while in the theater. Jennifer: 2:25 AM - Reported the feeling of walking through cobwebs while leaving Petey’s Room while Sarah reported something tickling her right arm. I could not find the source of what would cause these feelings. James: Reported feeling very uneasy while in the theater. Becky: Becky missed out on most of the investigation due to setting up and running her Fear Experiment. The experiment location was not ideal, and things did not run smoothly due to having to pull in people who were busy investigating other places. Due to this, she will not be continuing these experiments during investigations unless she is the lead investigator. Possible Photo of Entity: Tina: "I view photography as well as videos as a tool in our toolbox. Changes in a photo can be a result of shutter drag, light interference, and pure manipulation. Orbs or light anomalies are typically a result of a dragging shutter speed. The longer a shutter is open, it will result in a blurred image or multiple images such as the one attached. For the images with a line of light, it is possibly blurring due to light and speed. Nikon is a new mirrorless camera that has technology that allows for low light and slow shutter speeds. At this time, I am unable to explain the changes between these images taken within milliseconds of each other." Sarah: "It's certainly interesting. My thought is it could be digital noise because it was shot in low light conditions at what I assume was a high ISO. That combined with slight lighting changes because there were those "candle" flickering lights at the base of the staircases on either side of the gargoyle. The fact that there is a progression of three photos shot rapidly with slight changes in the face is what makes it compelling. And the light reflection to the left of it almost seems to be blocked by the face in the first photo." Possible Explanations of Activity: The “footsteps” reported in the “Mr. Boots” tunnel could be coming from a water heater located at the entrance of the location. Both separate groups reported that it creates a popping and ticking sound that might be mistaken for footsteps. It is important to note that we set up a grid light and motion detector in the tunnel to see if we could record any movement. We did not capture anything. However, we did have a personal experience with Sarah (as noted above), and we did note that there were some pipes toward the end of the tunnel that could mess with vision, but this would not explain what she saw. While Sarah, Tania, Lindsey, Edward, and I were in the theater, we did notice some odd flickering of the lights at strange times, but this may be due to bad wiring; this also happened with a section of lights while a group was in the tunnel. According to Pythian staff, they believe it is electrical. Points of Interest: More than one investigator from both separate groups felt varying amounts of physical and emotional feelings in the theater. Our most active places seem to be the gargoyle area and theater. Out of all our investigators, Tina got the most EVPs. Even though we all were recording in the same group, none had anything similar to what she recorded. Tina caught a strange photo in a cell when Tania saw a bright circle of light near the gargoyle. Overall, it was an exciting place, and we look forward to going back! ​ LOCATION HISTORY In Springfield, Missouri, the Pythian Home of Missouri, also known as Pythian Castle, was built in 1913 by the Knights of Pythias and later owned by the U.S. military. During World War II, German and Italian prisoners of war were assigned here for medical treatment and as laborers. Some prisoners were kept in the detached powerhouse and laundry room behind the castle. The U.S. Army still owns the laundry room. The building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on October 7, 2009. It is privately owned and open to the public for tours by appointment. Well, we went back again for a busy fun filled night of ghosts! Becky and I were in the same group, so she had summed up the night and saw what I saw. When we were seeing "Timothy", the little boy ghost, he was a little shadow standing right in front of our fearless team member, Marty. All of a sudden, Timothy was gone and standing in front of Becky and next to Jonathan. I only saw Jonathan's flashlight move up out of his holster and then it swung back down into the holster by itself. Jonathan's hands were full of other equipment, so he wasn't moving it and no one else was either. It moved by itself. Then I saw a quick flash and saw Timothy take off down the hall. The eye doctor who was with us was standing next to me when we were on the 4th floor. After seeing plenty of shadow people down the hall, we both felt something brush our pant legs a couple of times. I looked down and could see my pantleg move like something was touching it. Supposedly, there was a homeless man and his white shepard that died in the area that we were in. There was a smell of smoke (cigarette) at the end of the hall on the 3rd floor. This is where Mrs. Clark has been seen or smelled (she smoked cigarettes). A person in our group left a cigarette on the ground to see if it would vanish, but we went back and it was still there. Tons of shadowpeople, but the disembodied pairs of eyes in the cafeteria hallway were incredible!!!!!! Can't wait to go back. My 35mm film is being examined and will update the results soon. ​ Becky Ray:Wow. What a night! We got quite lucky and had about half of the same team from last year, so there was good energy going in. Earlier in the day a few people had reported seeing apparitions during the daylight tours, and the "traditional" haunted house had just opened for the season, so the building seemed to want to get someone's attention. We were definitely hoping it would be ours! We started in the cafeteria and then moved outside to the hallway between the cafeteria and the kitchen. Within seconds of positioning myself next to the wall, the shadow people began to appear. Not just appear, our local guide Jonathan was next to me and I realized that he was moving backwards almost as quickly as I was while we watched a large shadow person practically RUN towards us up the hallway. Several of the other people in our group hadn't even set up yet! We remained in that hallway and witnessed many more shadow people, red and green pin points of lights that danced around, a few "sparklers," and then we saw "eyes." Two sets of glowing eyes. Not like you see in horror movies where there are just pin points like animal eyes reflecting light back at you, but these were eyeballs. The whites of the eyes were clear! One of the men in our group is an optomotrist, and he immediately said, "No mistake, those are eyes!" They were at eye height, blinked, moved side to side slightly, remained there while people took photos, then vanished. We inspected the area, and there was nothing to reflect. We were on the second floor, and nothing shining in from outside would have hit that location, and not a single one of us could explain the blinking or movement. About the time I was starting to convince myself I hadn't actually seen this, a pinkish/red glow appeared on the right side of the hallway, then it changed to a greenish color, and then the eyes were back in the doorway to the cafeteria on the left hand side! I was disappointed and relieved it was time to move on to the next location. Next we went to the body chute where we heard odd noises and voices off and on, then we returned to the main building and the third floor. During last year's visit, the third floor was extremely active for us, and it was no different this year. MESA from Indiana (http://www.mesaproject.com) had equipment set up to take readings on part of the third floor, so we stayed at the other end. One of the local Louisville members who had been with the MESA group walked by and mentioned to Jonathan that "Timothy" had been seen by more than one person on the third floor earlier. During our visit and investigation in 2004, Jonathan and Rhonda captured "Timothy" in a photo with me although I did not see him. This year was different. While we were on the third floor, one of the members of our group was brave enough to walk alone down the hallway while we watched until we could no longer see him, and then turn around and walk slowly back towards us. Each time he did this, different shadow people walked back either behind or beside him. He said he felt their presence, and we could clearly see their outlines. At one point as he got to where we could not see him, he said someone was tugging on the bottom of his shirt. Since we had been told that "Timothy" had been seen on this floor, Jonathan began talking to him to see if this was who was doing the tugging. A child sized shadow began to peek at us from behind the member alone down the hallway. As we watched him slowly peeking at us, Jonathan talked to him, and asked him to make some noise, or play with him. "Timothy" must have taken him seriously, because I didn't even see him move. The next thing I knew, there was a boy standing directly in front of me, so close we brushed up against each other. The boy was as solid as everyone else, but all I could see was his hair and that he was looking at Jonathan. I couldn't get my mind around what was happening and I began saying "oh my god," over and over and moving backwards VERY fast and covered my eyes. One of the other members of our group took a photo, and then he was gone! Several people witnessed this, although almost everyone saw him differently. Jonathan didn't see anything but hair, but he felt his flashlight move. One of the other members who had never been on anything paranormal before, saw the boy move from in front of us to Jonathan, and then run when the camera flashed. Some saw lights moving, or saw some sort of movement. And then one or two just saw all of us react at the exact same time and saw nothing else. Also on the third floor, we had a couple of other interesting experiences. While watching a shadow person move in the hallway, Rhonda pointed her green laser pointer at it. When Jonathan asked the shadow person if we could see it, the green glow from the laser pointer illuminated a definite shape of a man walking towards us! The legs and arms were clear as can be in their stride, and about halfway up the hallway and getting closer! When it disappeared and we lit the hallway with flashlights, there was nothing there that the laser pointer could have been reflecting off of.
