As the twelve new limestone jail cells were opened, hostilities between free state and pro-slavery forces were reaching a boiling point in the area. In 1854, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which opened the Kansas Territory to settlement. The act provided for popular sovereignty in determining the issue of slavery. This act resulted in violent guerilla fighting, terrorizing local populations on both sides of the Missouri and Kansas lines as abolitionists poured into the Kansas Territory. In Jackson County, the Battles of Independence and Lone Jack in 1862 ended in Confederate victories. The state of Missouri was held in the Union by military force even though the elected Governor and legislators had voted to secede from the Union. In Jackson County, old grudges erupted between families, and neighbors turned against neighbors. Women and children were arrested and placed in the 1859 Jail now under the command of the Union Provost Marshals, nicknamed the "Little Gods" for their power over the population. When the Jail overflowed with the residents of Jackson County, other buildings were used as jails. One of those buildings collapsed, and several young girls were killed. Historians believe this action resulted in the raid on Lawrence, Kansas, in 1863. The raid resulted in the infamous Order No. 11 being issued, depopulating Jackson County and other counties along the Kansas-Missouri border. The enforcement of this order resulted in terrible hardships for the residents. Many women and children had to walk to Texas or Kentucky. Many were killed in the act of obeying the order, Union and Southern families alike. Many families never returned to Jackson County after the war. Independence artist George Caleb Bingham captured their misery on canvas (and another copy was painted on a tablecloth). He later produced an engraving of the painting and sold signed, numbered copies of "Martial Law." One of his signed proofs is on display at the 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum. Reproductions are available for sale. Decades after the war ended in Missouri, Jackson County's citizens felt the lingering bitterness and uncertainty of that great conflict. Out of these tumultuous times rode Missouri's most notorious outlaws. Outlaws like the James boys and Youngers used the remaining animosities from the outrages of the war to stay a step ahead of the law for nearly twenty years. In the spring of 1882, Jesse James was murdered. His older brother, Frank, began negotiations with the Missouri governor to surrender because he feared assassination. Frank James spent almost six months in the Jackson County limestone jail. In 1901, a brick jail was added to the back of the limestone jail to house chain gangs. Chain gangs were used to build roads, sewers, and other tasks assigned to them. They left six days a week at sunrise and returned at sunset. One inmate spent a year on the chain gang for stealing a cow. You can see the Marshal's home from Main Street, but the two-story limestone jail and the 1901 chain gang jail join the rear of the house. Take a self-guided tour of the jail and museum for a first-hand look at frontier justice. Tour the beautifully decorated home where the wife and children of the marshal lived. Guided tours are available upon request in advance." Visitors have reported feelings of nausea and extreme cold. Guards sometimes hear phantom footsteps, growling noises, and the sound of a man gasping for air. In addition, a spectral man in a blue uniform has also been seen in the center south cell. It has been thought that the man in the blue uniform may be Henry Bugler, who was the Jackson County sheriff. He was killed at the jail in 1866 and was the first law officer in Jackson County to be murdered. Investigators Notes These public investigations were led by members of Paranormal Activity Investigators for the Jackson County Historical Society in October 2023. Public Experiences Previous Investigations at this Location: 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum, Public Investigations 2022 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum, Visit 3 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum, Visit 2 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum, Visit 1

Established in 1959, the Jackson County Historical Society continues to preserve the 1859 Jail Museum located in Independence, Missouri. To truly unlock the history of the jailers and their families who lived in the residence and the criminals who occupied the jail cells, we recommend a walk through the old lockdown and a stroll through the front house. You can see the cell where Frank James lived for six months, the home where jailers and county deputy marshals lived, the office of the Jackson County marshal, and touch the mighty limestone and tremendous iron doors guarding each cell. In 1958, a used building materials dealer nearly got permission to demolish the brick home, limestone jail, and brick cell block addition. The dealer would get the right to claim the salvaged stone, brick, and timber as the price for his work. The abandoned buildings were given a new lease on life when a group of civic-minded citizens at the Jackson County Historical Society stepped in. They realized that there was yet another historical role for the two-story house and the jail hidden from street view at the corner of Main Street and what is now Truman Road. The jail was constructed in 1859 using a design by Asa Beebe Cross, a notable early architect in Kansas City, Missouri. The third Jackson County jail constructed consisted of a home for the jailer, an office for the county marshal and his staff, and twelve limestone jail cells. A brick structure was added to the rear of the original jail in 1907 to house chain gangs who worked on roads, sewers, and other public projects. Jackson County built the jail and home for $11,844.20 in 1859--the 2013 equivalent of $325,893.07. All of the guest were a pleasure and great on the ears and eye’s and helping us out. We got a tour of the facility from our contact we started at the 5th floor and worked our way down, this building is historic and I’m sure everyone that has ever lived in KC knows this place at one time or another if not drove past it. This place has many doors that lead you into many passageways to either another room of a room or to no where. Tunnels that are underground or just under the streets of KC. This place is an awesome site should be more publicized but I understand why it can nott be. The little secrets of KC it is. When taking the tour up on the 5th floor I got an uneasy feeling in what was a bar room back in the day until now as they have converted it into a study or possible a future meeting room. This site has no AC so it was hot and steamy just like it has been in past few weeks here in KC. I noticed through out the tour I kept feeling like I was either walking thru a spider web or something was touching me, there were no spider webs to the naked eye that you could see. For some reason I was drawn to a room near the basement as we went down the stairs, it had pool tables and a hidden door that had a drop of a lot of feet (sorry it just went on forever) that tunneled underground pretty cool. I’ll post a picture of that hole. I kept getting drawn to the other side of the room opposite side of where everyone was, so I took it upon myself to just walk to the other side and take some pictures but nothing of significant came out. When touring the theater I noticed a white like shadow pass thru the audio room and at the same time Bryan mentioned he saw a man’s figure in there also. (Later on a few other people mentioned they saw something also at different times) I thought it was strange that I almost felt giddy in this place a happy go lucky feeling of safety in it. Almost like I had been to this place so much of my life it felt normal to be there. But I only recall going there once when I was a teenager to go and pick up something that I don’t believe they do that anymore there. After our tour of the place we decided to stake out the theatre which is awesome view no matter how you look upon it in any direction and no matter where you sit the view is good. That’s a good theatre! When we decided on doing the EVP session I had an over whelming feeling my head hurt and my nose felt like someone shoved water up my nose kind of like I was drowning. Very weird sensations, after getting up and leaving that area of the stage the sensations went away. A few times thru-out the investigations I would get the same feeling over come me when I would get near the stage. Thru-out the investigation my camera would not work properly even though I charged my batteries, several other people of the group kept saying there was something wrong with there camera also. My camera would take forever to load up for the next shot as my camera is digital so that should not have happen. After viewing my photo’s I have a lot of either blurred out pictures or dark blobs of nothing. While sitting on the stage by the steps looking outward to the seats, I noticed a shadow pass by in the hallway. It was like it was walking cross the hallway in a hurry. I believe they called the hallway vomitory hallway ( I missed the story as to why it is called that) Becky and Jennifer went down to the area and checked it out and they also experienced the shadow, several people with in the group saw this shadow. It started to play with them which is wild. When we sent a guy down there to give them a tape recorder the shadow stopped and we got nothing else for the rest of the night from that area. (This place was originally built just for men only to be inside this building) I also noticed a shadow on the upper left side in the audience seats and in the middle by the lights. Thru-out the night the toilets would flush for no reason, when we asked it to make some sort of noise we could not hear anything being made but the guest there watching heard a noise of something banging on medal when we asked the question out loud. I kept feeling like my eye’s were playing tricks on me but when I would mention if some one saw it or heard it they also mentioned it too what they saw and it being the exact same thing. All in all I believe this place has something but what not sure. Do I feel like it harms anyone no, do I feel like they want something, no not really. I definitely think that the spirits of the people who once roamed those same halls and meeting rooms are still there in spirit. But I never once got the feeling of it was negative. I heard a lot of chitter-chatter at times and clicks, bangs, and swishing sounds and dragging of the feet sounds. Also at one point when we all sat quietly on the auditorium area we all heard noises like a construction was going on. (No one was upstairs) The whole group stayed together. It stopped when we tried to ask a question. Awesome investigations well worth the wait!! Bryan Kaplan:The main thing I experienced in this building was seeing the outline of a male in a doorway. Most of the evidence I witnessed and/or captured has to remain private because of the nature of the building and it was requested that the location remain private. It was an interesting experience, and I would like to go back but just with the group (and not with any onlookers). Becky Ray:On this investigation, I used an EMF meter, a 35mm camera, and an 8mm video camera. This is truly an amazing building architecturally. There are so many amazing things in this building just from a historical point of view. During our investigation this night we had several as of yet unexplainable things happen. During our initial walk through a few members felt an oppressiveness in a couple of the rooms, and saw strange shadows as if there were other people present in the building. Shortly after entering the auditorium during the walk through almost everyone present smelled an incense like odor at various places. At times this was a sandlewood type smell, while at others it was muskier. The main part of our investigation was on the auditorium in the building. Within five minutes of setting up in there several members reported seeing odd shadows moving about in different locations. An hour after we set up in the auditorium everyone on the stage could hear footsteps in the stage right area. I went to investigate what could be causing these sounds and found that the area the footsteps seemed to be coming from was completely empty. Later in the night several of us could see strange shadows down the exit from the auditorium. Jennifer and I went to check this out as I initially thought this was coming from the full moon outside. As we got to the area in question I tried to find the location the shadows appeared to be standing in by asking everyone still on the stage to let me know when I was the correct height. Jennifer and I waited in this area a bit, when the people on the stage stated that they could see three shadows on the wall rather that just the two that Jennifer and I would be casting. I immediately assume that the third shadow is a trick of light and it is either my shadow, or Jennifer's or a combination of both of us. I asked Jennifer to walk away, and one shadow left. I then stepped backwards away, and a second shadow moved away. HOWEVER, the third shadow that was between us stayed put for about ten more seconds. I have no explanation for this phenomena. Jennifer and I stayed in this area a while longer and chased odd sounds up and down the hallway as if someone was teasing us. While we were there the other members on the stage reported seeing that same third shadow appear next to us from time to time. I could find no source of this shadow and I searched the entire area. The second oddest thing about that night was that we kept hearing the toilets flush from the men's room in another part of the building. This is something the people that work in this building have reported. This is a fantastic building, and I am very anxious to investigate again! Kevin Simpson:This is an amazing building, I had so many unexplainable things happen to me and other members of the group. On the intial walk thru myself and another member saw what looked like a head and shoulder peeking out of a door and then would dissappear back into the door, when we went to investigte the doorway and the room that it lead to there was nothing to be found. Several times throughout the night we had strange smells like a pipe smell and smoking hasnt been aloud in the building in a long time. One that really stood out was we everyone in the building was in one central location doing an EVP session and during the session it sounded like someone walked across the back of the stage. Several of us went to see if we could find the source to no avail. All in all this was a great first investigation for me. I would love to go back and see what else we can get. Nothing in my pictures. Jennifer Sprague:First I want to thank this Historic Building members for this amazing opportunity to come and investigate! many thanks to you all! On this investigation, I took some notes for the group and used a hand held digital audio recorder. After the initial tour of the place we started off in the auditorium and did an initial walk through. I did notice some sort of shadowy like presence near the projection booth a couple of times and it is interesting to note that at this location an apparition of a red headed man was said to appear. I did not see a man, so to speak, but do feel I saw some sort of movement. We tried to recreate the shadow that I, and others, had witnessed but we could not. I did not notice anything else that was unusual or strange until we noticed some sort of shadow lingering near an exit sign in front of the entrance way to the theater. Becky and I wanted to investigate this further, so we decided to go near the exit sign to see if we could duplicate the shadow. In the midst of trying to do this we both heard some incoherent noise coming from our right...we both tried to locate the noise but could not, we made a point to note that it was nobody in the theater making the noise. Afer we could not locate the noise we went back to trying to figure out the shadow figure we kept seeing. Upon switching and changing our location to see if we could duplicate this shadow....we both noticed that at this time other members were saying that they could see it.. so Becky and I both moved slightly seeing BOTH of our shadows move but noticing that ONE stayed in the middle. Startled, we both then heard noises coming from our right ( facing the auditorium) it sounded like something being shoved or drug across the floor. We went to investigate this and could find nothing out of place nor could we figure out where the noise was coming from. Also during this time it was said that the shadow was seen around me..but I would like to note that I did not see anything around at that time nor did I feel strange..but it seemed that it was very clear to others that there was something around me. We did an evp session earlier in the night and although I did not notice anything strange others said that they heard a slight walking or shuffling during that time. I am still reviewing audio at this moment and will post anything intersting that I find. Overall, I was really impressed with the courtesy and kindness of everyone there and I look forward to going back in the future and doing an investigation again at this amazing placce!! Miranda Stark:Breathtaking building! Absolutely amazing structure! The stories of the possible ghostly encounters and activity are quite intriguing! We were fortunate enough to have an eventful investigation (in my opinion). Moving shadows, audible footsteps, knocks and thumps. Still reviewing photographs. My audio was disrupted by draining batteries in the middle of the first evp session. My own senses were quite useful in this place, though, as I felt a heightened "awareness" of an unseen presence, and this rarely occurs with me. Wonderful investigation. I would personally like to thank the owners and managers for permitting us to explore and investigate this amazing historic building! No EVPS for this Investigation at this time PHOTOS EVP Session This was during the first EVP session, when everyone seated (here) suddenly began hearing "tapping" coming from behind a nearby wall. Submitted by Miranda Hallway - 12:40 AM Becky and Jennifer went into the hallway to see if they could also see the shadow up close. They could hear things and see the shadow . The rest of the group is on the stage watching them. You will notice that Becky is to the right and Jennifer is to the left. Becky face is partially blurred out for some reason. The shadow was taller then both of them. Submitted by Angela Dust - 11:30 PM As we entered the auditorum area you could see all the dust. A lot of construction going on. Ganzfield Experiment Location Information Date:19th July, 2014 Type:Residential Location Title:Ganzfield Experiment City/State:Lexington, MO Investigation Times:09:00 PM - 11:00 PM Status:Analysis Weather Information Sunrise:06:05 AM Sunset:08:37 PM High Temperature:78 °F Low Temperature:57 °F Sky Condition:Clear Wind:S at 2 mph Humidity:94% Precipitation:% Lunar Phase:Last Quarter % disk visible:43% Solar X-Rays:Normal Geomagnetic Field:Quiet Pressure:30.03 mmHg Investigators Present Angela Hodge Jenny Kerr Becky Ray Jennifer Sprague Location History A ganzfeld experiment (from the German for “entire field”) is a technique used in parapsychology which claims to be able to test individuals for extrasensory perception (ESP). The ganzfeld experiments are among the most recent in parapsychology for testing telepathy. In a typical ganzfeld experiment, a "receiver" is placed in a room relaxing in a comfortable chair with halved ping-pong balls over the eyes, having a red light shone on them. The receiver also wears a set of headphones through which white or pink noise (static) is played. The receiver is in this state of mild sensory deprivation for half an hour. During this time, a "sender" observes a randomly chosen target and tries to mentally send this information to the receiver. The receiver speaks out loud during the thirty minutes, describing what he or she can see. This is recorded by the experimenter (who is blind to the target) either by recording onto tape or by taking notes, and is used to help the receiver during the judging procedure. In the judging procedure, the receiver is taken out of the Ganzfeld state and given a set of possible targets, from which they select one which most resembled the images they witnessed. Most commonly there are three decoys along with the target, giving an expected rate of 25%, by chance, over several dozens of trials. Investigators Notes Becky Ray:We had mixed results on our first night trying the Ganzfield Experiment. Angela and Jenny's results were amazingly accurate, while Becky and Jennifer's weren't even close. I'm intrigued enough by Angela and Jenny's results to attempt this again! Jennifer Sprague:I was a receiver for this experiment. It definitely plays with your mind because in my experience with this it gives you somewhat of a sense of paranoia. My paranoia was not overwhelming, but I did feel a little "on edge" and it took me awhile to relax. As the noise in the headphones increased and decreased, I began to notice that I kept seeing a floating red dot sporadically in my mind's eye. After I relaxed a little the images started forming. Everything from trains and doorways to rectangle shapes and colors and they kept coming. When it came time to pick the object that closely resembled the majority of the images I saw, the only thing that came close was a rectangle remote control and it wasn't the image of what the sender was sending me. I do find this experiment interesting and I would love to try it places that have had paranormal activity and also try it with various different types of noises in the headphones as well to see if that yields anything interesting. As far as it proving or heightening any sense of "telepathy" I think that remains to be seen, but it is interesting to see how the brain reacts to different stimulus as with the pink and white noise and Jenny and Angela did get some interesting results. The Beast pioneered the "open format" design, where you're not in a line, you're wandering through the scenes, never knowing when a spook or an activated scene will rock into action. The building this haunted house is located in was built around 1869 for Alvah Mansur, who joined forces with the Deere Company to eventually become The John Deere Company. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:First off Thanks Z95.7 and the Beast owners for allowing us an opportunity to check out the haunted house. We didn't really get a chance to go through the place like normal since it was in operation. Camera's of all type were not allowed but we did try and get some EVP but hate to tell ya it's probable a wash since all the haunted house sounds were in full operation. We hope in the future that they will let us go in when it's not in operation and a bit more quiet to fully venture about. I did enjoy going through the place as a guest and man those bouts of Air being blown on you were the scariest for me.....i never knew when they were coming one after another....The forest was very cool....I think if we didn't have an escort yah I would of been in there for hours just trying to find the way we came in. Very cool!! Andrew from z95.7 was a great trooper Thanks again. Becky Ray:Kansas City radio station KCHZ, 95.7fm "The Vibe" invited us on this investigation, and I want to thank them for the opportunity! Although it was difficult to do a full investigation due to the haunted house being in operation at the time, we did talk to several employees who related different occurances that they have experienced. We hope to return following the Halloween holiday to conduct a complete investigation! Sarah Schroeder:We were invited to come research this location thanks to 95.7 the Vibe. I brought with me my 35mm digital camera and used Becky Ray's Olympus Pearlcorder S711 microcassette. The haunted house was in full operation at the time so I was unable to use my camera and unfortunately due to the audio going on in the house, I was unable to get any clear audio. We were able to go into a few of the rooms that staff had claimed to have activity. We did a run through the house with the manager and I had a really great time! It is such an elaborate haunted house that I would love to go back sometime in a social setting. Additionally, I greatly look forward to a time when we can go back after the halloween season and do a thorough investigation of the house! Thank you to The Beast, their employees, and the Vibe for a great experience! Jennifer Sprague:On this investigation I brought along an audio-recorder to use for interview purposes. This was more of a preinvestigation run through.. we got to go through the haunted house as it was in progress and we spent a lot of our time hearing different stories from employees. We also got to stop by some of the rooms that had reported activity. Since the haunted house was in progress, and had people going through it at a steady pace, it was difficult to do a full investigation, but we all got to meet some of the employees and managers of The Beast and got to hear some of their stories. We all hope to go back in the near future for a future investigation when the haunted house is not in progress so that we can thoroughly investigate. We all had a wonderful time meeting everybody! Special thanks to everybody that worked at The Beast Haunted House and 95.7 The Vibe! You all were great!:) Junior Szudarski:First off, I would like to thank 95.7 the Vibe and Amber & Chris from The Beast haunted house for allowing us to tour and investigate the facility. • ARKANSAS - The Crescent Hotel | kcghosts

URBAN LEGENDS ARKANSAS - The Crescent Hotel by: Kelli Patrick The Crescent Hotel was built in the middle-late 1800s and has been several things besides a hotel. It has been a college for girls in the 1920's and a controversial hospital and health spa in the 1930's. A man known as Michael, an Irish stonemason who worked on the hotel when it was being built in 1885, fell from the roof and died in the second-floor area which became room 218. Doctor Baker ran the hotel as a hospital and health spa in the 1930's. He practiced medicine without a license. Supposedly he like to perform experiments on his patients. The state shut the hospital down. Michael has stayed on at the hotel playing tricks with the lights and TV, or pounds loudly from inside the thick walls in the room. There are also other spirits here. The ghost of a nurse dressed in white has been reported on the third floor. A gentleman in Victorian clothing haunts the lobby. He has been spotted at the bottom of the stairway and sitting at the lobby bar. Other apparitions have been spotted in rooms 202 and 424. The ghost of Doctor Baker, who ran the hospital has been seen in the old recreation room and at the foot of the first-floor stairway. When I was in high school, I went on a weekend trip to the Crescent Hotel. I was babysitting and was staying in one room with the two children on the third floor. The first night I stayed there, the girl was having trouble sleeping and wanted to stay in her parents room. I opened the door to our room and stepped in the hallway. We saw the ghost of the nurse pushing a medicine cart. She was dressed in white with her nurses hat and had a gray apron. We saw her from the back. She kept walking and we ran into the next room where the parents were staying. That next morning, we were sitting at a table in the ballroom/meeting area. While we were eating, I heard a small child talking and giggling right next to me. I never saw a child, but only heard it. I did not know the history about the hotel until I read a book about it a few years later. My father stayed at the hotel in 1996 and had a strange "dream." In his dream, he was lying on the bed and the room walls turned purple. He was now paralyzed and coming at him were a doctor and a nurse. They were dressed in vintage clothing and the doctor had some type of sharp medical instrument. Was this Doctor Baker and his nurse? The next morning, he asked some local people about the history of the hotel. One person told him about Doctor Baker and his medical practices. Besides the ghosts, the hotel is a great place to stay, if you dare!

We used grid lights, audio recorders, cameras, emf detectors, a child-related REM pod, a paintbrush trigger object, and several motion-activated sensors we placed throughout the house. We did capture some possible EVPS and other footage that we are currently reviewing. The second floor and basement appear to be the most active. One of our members, Julie, reported being touched in the basement as well as reported that there were some odd fluctuations on her EMF meter during a Q and A session in the main floor Ledger Rm. We also had an interesting experience during our opposite trigger experiment. I was in the third-floor servant room with Neshla, and Angela and Julie were in the basement. Each group had a piece of paper with questions on it to ask the opposite group as well as various trigger objects in each place. We did seem to have some responses on the third floor that seemed to be responsive to the basement group’s questions. I would love to experience this more in the future. This is a beautiful place and such a wonderful piece of history for Kansas City! We look forward to going back and many thanks to the historical society and Elijah for allowing us to investigate! Location History In the early settlement days, before established roads were laid out, the estate grounds were considered a "short-cut" on the road that was later to become part of the "Santa Fe Trail". Because of this high-traffic location, the property had many owners between 1827 and 1878. Some hoped to make a living from outfitting the covered wagon trains, others were apparently just real-estate speculators. Some of the owners played a significant role in the establishment of this area and the West. They became prominent businessmen, helping to found other communities and the beginnings of the Pony Express. During the trails period, thousands of wagons rolled down the hill from the Courthouse Square and passed over the property where the museum now sits. Evidence of the migration can still be seen today in the form of swales, or wagon ruts, left in the field directly across the bridge from the museum. George Caleb Bingham, a famous 19th-century American artist, and Missouri politician was one of the home’s most distinguished residents. He and his family moved to the estate shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Bingham maintained a studio at his residence in Independence, a log-and-clapboard building to the northwest of his home. (Thought to be one of the first buildings built by earlier owners.) Bingham used this building as his studio. It was in this studio, Order Number 11 was painted. The military proclamation officially known as Order Number 11 was issued in Kansas City, Mo. In August 1863, Brig. Gen. Thomas Ewing, Jr. commander of the District of the Border required all persons living in Jackson, Cass, Bates, and Vernon counties, except only those residing in certain areas near large towns, to leave their homes within fifteen days. The violence manifested itself chiefly in border raids by "Red Legs" and "Jayhawkers" who consistently plundered and committed violent aggressions on Missouri towns. The military order issued by Ewing was intended as a retaliatory measure after a particularly bloody raid was made from the Missouri side by guerrilla William Quantrill and his band on the town of Lawrence, Kansas. Bingham strenuously resented the order and appealed personally to Ewing’s superior officer, Gen John M. Schofield, to have it rescinded, but to no avail. When he was told the order would have to stand, he reportedly warned Schofield, "If God spares my life, with pen and pencil, I will make this order infamous in history." The painting Martial Law or The War of Desolation, better known as Order Number 11 was the result. There are two versions of the picture. In 1868, he made arrangements with John Sartain of Philadelphia to have "Martial Law" reproduced as an engraving. Upon publication, the engraving caused much furor and was denounced from the pulpit as being too sympathetic to the Confederacy and its cause. In March 1870, Bingham finished his second version of Order Number 11. The second, painted in the spring of 1870 shows minor changes in details and pose and costume. The second version is better known since it was the one used by Sartain to produce the large engraving commissioned by Bingham. It soon became one of the most publicized pictures of the day. During this period, Bingham also was politically active. In 1868, he became a candidate for Congress from the Sixth Missouri District. He was defeated at the nominating convention. Bingham sold his home in Independence to Mr. Francis Eames in 1870 and moved to Kansas City. Bingham would fondly remember his home of five years, returning in 1874 to a Fourth of July celebration to deliver a speech about the importance of the day and its relationship to the City of Independence and its citizens. In Kansas City, Bingham served as Police Commissioner. He then served as Adjutant General of Missouri and investigated the bombing of the James home at Kearney, Missouri, by Pinkerton agents. He later was appointed as the first professor of art at the newly established University of Missouri, an institution championed by his old friend James S. Rollins. Mental incapacity claimed his second wife Eliza, and her condition required her confinement at the state asylum at Fulton, Missouri, where she died on November 3, 1876. Bingham married for the third time, one year before his death. His bride was Mrs. Johnston Lykins, widow of a former mayor of Kansas City and rabid Confederate supporter, who established a home for Confederate war widows and orphans, the Lykins Institute, in Kansas City. It was here with Mattle Lykins that Bingham made his home in 1877, and it was here that he died on July 7, 1879, from what papers of the day termed "choleramorbus". The Waggoners were early millers in Perry and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. In 1865, Peter Waggoner, Sr. sent his son William to Independence to look over business opportunities. William liked the prospects, and in 1867 the family purchased the "old City mill" from John Overfelt. The family business developed a reputation for producing the very best in baking and cake flours, and "Queen of the Pantry" flours became known all over the middle west. Reflecting their improved economic condition, the Waggoner's new home across the street from their rapidly growing flour mill immediately began to be adjusted to fit the needs and expectations of its owners. During the 1890s, extensive renovation was done to the home when William Henry, Jr. and his wife moved into the home. They contracted the architectural firm of Root and Siemens, with Mr. Henry Ohaus in charge of interior decoration. The Waggoner family continued to live in this home until 1976 when Harry K. Waggoner died. In 1979, a group of private citizens, in cooperation with the City of Independence, purchased the 19.5-acre tract for a museum and public park. During previous visits to this home we have had a few strange things happen. On this night the most activity seemed to be in the basement. As I stood in the basement with a few members of the tour group heard noises as if someone else was in the basement in a back room. After going in there and checking it out it was clear we were alone, however once the lights were back off we could see a strange "glow" in the back corner. Inspecting with my flashlight there was nothing to be found that should be causing such a glow. In that particular area it was only wood and concrete rocks. We watched it for quite a while and at one point one of the gentlemen asked for whoever it was to "activate the device" he was holding. Immediately after asking, the Cell Sensor he was using went off loudly for approximately two seconds. Previous Investigations at this Location The Hannah Jo Cusack House aka The Berry Home - Visit 3, 14th October, 2011 The Hannah Jo Cusack House aka The Berry Home - Visit 2, 30th September, 2011 The Hannah Jo Cusack House aka The Berry Home - Visit 1, 17th September, 2011 No EVPS for this Investigation at this time No PHOTOS for this Investigation at this time No VIDEOS for this Investigation at this time

Answer: Previous owners became ill and had to sell house. Question: Have you heard any legends about this property? Answer: Been told house was built on sacred ground. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:Tonight's investigation was interesting for sure. We were invited to do a documentary on a person that is an alcoholic that believes there are ghost in the upstairs of her home. When we arrived to the home we were taken upstairs to the smaller bedroom of the two on the 2nd level. It took some conveniences to get her upstairs as she was afraid to even go put a foot on the steps. Upon arrival of the room there is a big window that has a view of the neighbor’s house side view which has 2 levels, 2 upper set of windows and 2 lower sets of windows that are full-size. (I have posted some pictures of the room) We were told that small children slept in this room and would always be scared that a man was in the room with him. When checking out the closest I immediately felt a room temperature difference from bedroom to closest. There were no vents in the closest but the closest is next to the outside wall of the house so insulation was minimal to none on that side of the wall. The temperature outside were in the low single digits that night. Miranda and I decided to go about the house and check the rest of the home to get a complete view of everything; while Becky tried to get more details in an interview from her. After 2 hours of the investigation I have come to conclusion that the house is not with a ghost or spirit at that time. The house was very pleasant feeling, but felt very sad in the home as they were filming about a life of an alcoholic. I'm not sure if the owner will remember us or even know we were there really but if we got the chance to go on different circumstances we could probable get a better reading if anything paranormal. All in all I enjoyed helping with the documentary. Hopefully it will air and we get to see it on TV sooner then later or later then never. Becky Ray:This home is a very nice three bedroom home in a suburban part of town. However when we arrived it was very apparent that the owner was under the influence of alcohol. When I asked where we should set up she just pointed upstairs but refused to go up there with us. Even though she had been drinking, nothing she described as experiencing was anything that we had not heard other witnesses at other locations describe before. Something I found interesting was that she never saw anything, just heard voices and singing, and complained of some plumbing and electricity problems. But when we did our investigation of the location we found explanations for most everything except the voices she hears. Although we did not experience anything out of the ordinary while we were present in the home, that does not mean that there is not anything going on there, however the fact that the owner has a drinking problem has to be taken into account. Miranda Stark:We arrived at this location by the request of the owner, to investigate some possible activity, mostly in the upstairs region of the home. The owner seemed very reluctant to even climb the stairs to the second floor, and explained to us that she has the impression that a presence lingers up there, particularly in one specific room, that makes her feel rather uncomfortable, as if she is being watched. She made it clear to us that she was quite nervous about the "presence" in her home. She commented that she believes that the house may be located on, or near, Native American burial ground, which we have yet to confirm as a fact. While Becky went about her interview process with the homeowner, Angela and I made our basic sweep of the entire home, looking for baseline EM readings and taking note of any possible leakage or overexposure. The EMF's all seemed rather normal, and tame throughout the location. The homeowner advised us that she has witnessed strange behavior from her pet cat in the room upstairs where she feels the most uneasy. We decided to take the cat into this room, and observe it's behavior for a few minutes. The cat did not react as if it felt uncomfortable in any way. She purred and played, and looked around like any curious cat would. We found nothing notable about any of our findings in this home. We think, perhaps, that the homeowner may be under a great deal of stress after learning more about her situation. We feel that alot of what she may be feeling around her has relationships to her current mental state, as she seems to be quite lonely and depressed, using alcohol and other prescribed medications to cope with life. We have concluded that we are unable to verify paranormal activity at this location at this time, largely due to the homeowner's present state of health and mind. Prior family was said to be very private they had a boy and girl who lived there prior. Neighbors described them as being very quiet and not seen. A typical 3 bedrom 2 bath raised ranch home. The man of the house contacted us to investigate after the lady of the house and son described to him of certain things happening when he was not in the house or on business trip. The man of the house has only had one incident in the house and that was hearing footsteps in the hallway when no one else was around. The history of the current owners is that a relative did pass away in the home several years prior. The lady of the house and son feel as if he is still there with them. The lady of the house and son have witnessed; Shadows, hearing footsteps, dishes breaking but nothing broke, hearing the dishes move around, noises in the closet, scratching on the ceiling, hearing a little girls voice in the spare bedroom, and hearing little footsteps above the spare bedroom. Investigators Notes Angela Hodge:Thank you again for having us to your place to investigate. We had the KC Star tag along to do a story with us. We were to have another TV crew come also but they did not make it at the last minute. When we did our walk-thru of the home presented by the man of the house. He did explain to us that stuff never happens when he is around, the lady of the house was ill so she was not present at the time. We were shown the kitchen at first and he mentions this where there son saw a dark shadow near the dining room that had no eye's and opened its mouth wide open in front of him. We were then taken to the basement where he tells us that a lot of people don't like it down there, I admitly felt a little off in one area of the basement. I did not mention anything to the group about it yet but he then goes on describe that a lot of people won't sit downstairs with him very long and that a friend who slept down there felt uneasy through out the night. We then went upstairs and we were shown the spare bedroom where the person past away of a long term illiness. When walking in there the room felt good and actually lighter then the other rooms almost peaceful. We started the investigation downstairs in the basement and after going back down 3 times we have concluded that we don't believe it's paranormal or anything of spirits down stairs. There is only one spot in the basement that makes people feel off or gives you a headache of some sort and that is near the TV area which is near the furnace. We believe it has something to do with being near the furnace and it possible giving off something, but it does not feel to be paranormal. When we checked out the kitchen and sat in the living room trying to instigate anything to move the dishes or appear nothing happened nor did the room atmosphere change. Through out the whole time the house felt good and pleasant. If the owners were to request another visit i would recommend not having the male homeowner home and only having the female there with us to see if that brings anything out. Other then that it was a pleasant night. If I lived there I would not feel uneasy living there. Thanks to the KC Star for being very respectful to the homeowner throughout the investigation. Jennifer Sprague:First, I would like to thank the homeowners for their time and for allowing Angela and I to come and investigate their home. On this investigation I used an EMF detector, a 35 mm disposable camera, and a digital audio recorder. We started with a walk through of the home and noted the areas where some of the family members have claimed to have experienced paranormal activity. I started by doing an EMF sweep to get a base reading of these places and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary with the readings I was receiving. However, upon entering the basement the climate did seem to change compared to other areas of the house, Angel and I as well as the members from the Kansas City Star, noticed that the atmosphere felt heavier. And after awhile my head started to feel clogged, others noted similar sensations too, it is possible that the environment could have been a factor to these sensations, new carpet was laid, which does contain chemicals as well as other possible factors. We did an evp session down stairs and I am in the process of going over that audio and will post anything should I find something. Upstairs, the atmosphere felt much lighter, a shadow like appartion was reported to be seen in the kitchen so we focused on the many factors that could have caused it. Recreating the setting as it was when the shadow like figure was reported. Although we were not able to recreate exactly what was reported we were able to duplicate something similar. We also did another evp session upstairs as well. It was during this time that Angela thought that for a split second something touched her but wasnt for sure. It is interesting to note that most of the activity is reported when the male homeowner is not home, Id like maybe to go back in the future with perhaps him not present and with other members of the family there and see if that changes things. Im in the process of reviewing audio and will post that should I find anything. A big thank you again to the KC Star for being there with us and being respectiful and a big thank you to the homeowners for allowing us to come out!
